He sends upon you one single blast, and He would ruin your lands, your trees, your crops, and your fruits. Then He said, Mighty and Majestic: “And He brought forth therewith fruits as a sustenance for you,” meaning from what He brings out of the earth for you. “So do not set up rivals to Allah,” that is, likenesses and similitudes in the form of idols that do not reason, do not hear, do not see, and have no power over anything—while you know that they have no power over anything of these great favors with which your Lord, Blessed and Exalted, has favored you.

(Qur’an 2:23-25, M. H. Shakir) And if you are in doubt as to that which We have revealed to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call on your witnesses besides Allah if you are truthful. But if you do it not and never shall you do it, then guard yourselves against the fire whose fuel is men and stones; it is prepared for the unbelievers. And convey good news to those who believe and do good deeds, that they shall have gardens in which rivers flow; whenever they are given a portion of the fruit thereof, they shall say: This is what was given to us before; and they shall be given the like of it, and they shall have pure mates in them, and in them, they shall abide.

99-/353 _1- The Scholar (peace be upon him) said: When Allah struck parables for the brazen disbelievers [1], those who repelled the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and the hypocritical enemies of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), those who rejected what Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) said concerning his brother ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and who denied that what he said was from Allah Most High—these are the signs of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) and his miracles for Muhammad—added to the signs He made clear for ‘Ali (peace be upon him) in Mecca and Medina—and they only increased in arrogance and transgression. Allah, the Exalted, said: “And if you are in doubt as to what We have sent down to Our servant…” until you deny that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah and that this sent-down revelation upon him is My speech, despite My manifesting for him in Mecca the dazzling signs—such as the cloud that shaded him in his journeys; and the inanimate objects from mountains, rocks, stones, and trees that greeted him; and his being defended from those intent on killing him, and his killing them; and such as the two distant trees that drew together so he sat behind them for his need, then they returned to their places as they had been; and such as his calling a tree and it came to him responsive, humble, submissive; then his commanding it to return, and it returned, hearing and obedient.

So come, O assembly of Quraysh and the Jews, and O assembly of the nawaasib who lay claim to [1] Islam while being free of it, and O assembly of eloquent, articulate Arabs: bring a chapter like it [2]—from one like Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), a man like one of you, who neither read nor wrote, who did not study a book nor frequent a scholar, nor learn from anyone, and you knew him in his journeys and his residence; he remained thus for forty years, then he was given the compendiums of knowledge until he taught the first and the last. If you are in doubt about these signs, then bring, from one like this man, speech like this, so that it may become clear that he is a liar as you allege; for whatever is from other than Allah will be found to have a counterpart among Allah’s creatures. And if you—O readers of the scriptures among the Jews and Christians—are in doubt about what Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) brought you of his laws and of his appointing his brother, the Chief of the Trustees, as trustee—after he has shown you his miracles, among them: that the poisoned foreleg spoke to him; that a wolf conversed with him; that the trunk wept for him while he was on the pulpit; that Allah warded off from him the poison which the Jews had mixed into their food, turning the affliction back upon them and destroying them by it; and that he multiplied a small amount of food—then bring a chapter like it, that is, like the Qur’an, from the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, the Scrolls of Abraham, and the fourteen [3] books; for you will not find in all of Allah’s books a chapter like a chapter from this Qur’an. So how can the alleged [4] speech of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) be superior to all of Allah’s speech and His books, O assembly of Jews and Christians?! Then He said to their cohorts: “And call your witnesses besides Allah”—call your idols that you worship, O polytheists; and call your devils, O Christians and Jews; and call your companions among the atheists, O hypocrites among the Muslims from the nاصib against the pure family of Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family), and all your helpers upon your aim—if you are truthful that Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) fabricated this Qur’an from his own accord and that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, did not send it down upon him, and that what he mentioned of ‘Ali’s (peace be upon him) superiority over his whole community and entrusting him with their leadership is not by the command of the Wisest of judges. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “But if you do not—and you will never do it—then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel is men and stones,” its fuel being men and stones; it is kindled to become a torment for its inmates; it is prepared for the disbelievers who belie His speech and His Prophet, and who harbor enmity to His wali and trustee. He said: So know, by your incapacity to do that, that it is from Allah, the Exalted; for if it were from creatures, you could have opposed it.

99-/354: ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: And that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And if you”—O polytheists and Jews, and the rest of the nاصib among those who belie Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family)—“are in doubt regarding the Qur’an and regarding his preferring his brother ‘Ali (peace be upon him), who surpasses the excellent and excels the warriors, who has no equal in aiding the Godwary, suppressing the wicked, destroying the disbelievers, and spreading Allah’s religion among the worlds… And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our servant—in the invalidation of worshiping idols besides Allah; in forbidding allegiance to the enemies of Allah and enmity toward Allah’s friends; and in urging obedience to my brother, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family), taking him as an Imam, and holding him to be a surpassing, preeminent one—Allah, Mighty and Majestic, accepts no security except through him, nor obedience except with loyalty to him—and you think that Muhammad fabricated it from himself and ascribes it to his Lord, [then if it is as you suppose] produce a chapter like it, that is, like Muhammad—an unlettered man who never frequented the people of books, nor trained as anyone’s pupil, nor learned from him, and he is the one you knew in his residence and his journey, and he [3] never left you to a town without some of you accompanying him, observing his states, and knowing his news. Then he came to you with this Book, comprising these wonders. If he is a fabricator—as you claim—then you are the most eloquent, articulate, poetic, and literate, with no equal for you among the followers of other religions and other nations; and if he were a liar, the language is your language, his kind is your kind, his nature is your nature, so it would be possible for your group—or some of you—to oppose his speech with something better than it or like it. For whatever is from men, not from Allah, Mighty and Majestic, must have among mankind one who can match it. So bring that, that you—and others like you in your conditions—may know that he is a falsifier lying against Allah, the Exalted. “And call your witnesses besides Allah”—those who, you claim, will testify that you are in the right, and that what you bring is comparable to what Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) brought; and your “witnesses” whom you claim are your witnesses before the Lord of the Worlds on account of your worship of them, and that they will intercede for you with Him—if you are truthful in your statement that Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) fabricated it. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “But if you do not do what I have challenged you with—and you will never do it, that is, it will not be from you, nor will you be able to do it—then know that you are false; and that Muhammad is the truthful, the trustworthy, singled out with the message of the Lord of the Worlds, supported by the Faithful Spirit, and by his brother, the Commander of the Faithful and Chief of the Trustees. So believe him regarding what he informs from Allah, the Exalted, of His commands and prohibitions, and regarding what he mentions of the merit of ‘Ali, his trustee and brother. And by that, guard yourselves against the punishment of the Fire whose fuel—its firewood—is men and stones, stones of brimstone, the most intensely hot of things; that Fire is prepared for those who disbelieve in Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family),

Then He said: And give glad tidings to those who believe in Allah, who believe you in your prophethood and take you as an Imam, who believe you in your words and deem your actions correct; and who take your brother ‘Ali, after you, as an Imam and for you as an approved trustee; who submit to what he commands them and go to what he directs them; and who regard for him what they regard for you—except for the prophethood with which you are singular. And that the Gardens are only attained by them through loyalty to him and to the one from his progeny who is designated for them, and by loyalty to all the people of his guardianship, and enmity toward the people of opposing and hating him; and that the fires will not calm from them nor turn away from their punishment except by their turning away [1] from loyalty to his opponents and supporting those who hate them. “And who do good deeds” [2]—from fulfilling obligations and avoiding prohibitions—and who are not like those who disbelieve in you—give them glad tidings that they will have gardens—orchards—beneath which rivers flow, beneath their trees and dwellings. Whenever they are provided therein from those gardens with a fruit from its fruits, as provision—food is brought to them—they say: “This is what we were provided before in the world,” for its names are like the names of what is in the world—apples, quinces, pomegranates, and such and such—though what is there differs from what is in the world; it is at the utmost of goodness and does not turn into what the fruits of the world turn into of filth and other dislikes—yellow bile, black bile, and blood; rather, nothing is produced from what they eat except sweat that flows from their sides, more fragrant than the scent of musk. “And they shall be given the like of it”—that provision of fruits from those orchards—“resembling” one another: each resembles the other in that all are choice, with no inferior [3] among them, and each kind is at the utmost of goodness and delight—unlike the fruits of this world, some of which are unripe [4] and some overripe to corruption, with sourness, bitterness, and other kinds of dislikes; and “resembling” also in that their colors are uniform while their tastes differ. “And they shall have therein pure spouses”—in those gardens—purified from kinds of filth and dislikes, purified from menstruation and postnatal bleeding; not gadding about nor roaming [5], not intrusive, not deceitful [6], not fickle, not hateful [7] of their husbands, not loud-voiced [8], not given to absence [9], not foul-mouthed; free of all defects and dislikes. “And therein they shall abide,” residing in those orchards and gardens.

99-/355 _3- He said: And ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said: O assembly of our Shi‘a, be mindful of Allah and beware lest you become firewood for that Fire—even if you are not disbelievers in Allah. So ward it off by warding off injustice toward your believing brothers. For there is no believer who wrongs his believing brother who shares with him loyalty to us except that Allah will make heavy in that Fire his chains and shackles; none will release him from it except our intercession, and we will not intercede with Allah until we first intercede with his believing brother. If he pardons him, we will intercede; otherwise his stay in the Fire will be prolonged.

99-/356 _4- And ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him) said: O assembly of our Shi‘a, as for Paradise, it will not miss you—whether swiftly or slowly—but vie with one another in degrees. And know that the highest in degrees among you and the finest in palaces, houses, and structures is the best of you in answering the needs of his believing brothers [1] and the most generous among you in supporting their poor. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, brings one of you nearer to Paradise by a good word he speaks to his believing poor brother, more than a journey of a thousand years on foot—even if he is among those punished by the Fire. So do not deem kindness to your brothers insignificant, for Allah, the Exalted, will benefit you by it where nothing else can take its place.
