56. The Special Care of Imam Husain (a.s.) for Hussaini Gatherings

(1) One of the great scholars of the seminary of Qom narrated:

Some of my friends intended to go for pilgrimage to the holy shrines. I was eager to join them as well, but I had no money.

So I took a number of my books to a bookseller in order to leave them with him as collateral and borrow three hundred tomans, but he refused. My friends departed, and I was left behind.

I became very upset. That night, in a dream, I reached the presence of Imam Husain (a.s.). The Imam asked me about the cause of my sorrow. I said, “My friends went, and I was left behind.” The Imam replied:

“Do not be sad; I look after you once every week.”

I woke up, reflecting on the words of the Imam, and remembered that my father holds a weekly mourning gathering in our town, and this gathering had attracted the attention and grace of the Imam (a.s.).【1】

(2) A man named Asadullah, who was one of the members of the board of trustees of the Dasta of Daragh Khoy, passed away. On the night of Sham-e-Ghariban (the evening after Ashura), the members of the Dasta held a mourning gathering in his house.

That same night, someone saw him in a dream and asked about his condition. He replied:

“Two angels came to question me, but one said to the other: Right now, in this person’s house, there is a mourning gathering going on, and the cry of ‘Ya Husain’ is rising. That is enough; let us go back.”

After hearing this dream, they resolved that whenever a member of the board of trustees of that Dasta passes away, they will hold a mourning gathering in his house on the night of Sham-e-Ghariban.【2】

(3) Ḥujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimīn Sayyid Kāẓim Shāhrūdī, on Thursday 4/7/1392 (solar), narrated:

The late Āyatullāh Shaykh Nūrī Mashkūr was a noble man who, while in Najaf Ashraf, used to lead congregational prayer every morning in the Iwan of Gold. When he returned to Iran, he settled in Qom in the Kooche Ark neighborhood, near the area of the late Āyatullāh Zanjānī, and held a weekly mourning gathering there.

One day, my father and I went to his house for the gathering. While speaking about the majālis (mourning gatherings) of Imam Husain (a.s.), he said:

“In Najaf Ashraf I had a majlis, and I invited a reciter to come. When he arrived, no one had come to the gathering. The reciter said, ‘I will leave and come back another time.’

I realized that if he left, he might not return, so I told him, ‘Do you reciters not claim that in the gatherings of Imam Husain (a.s.) the angels also participate?’

He replied, ‘Yes, that is true.’

So I told him, ‘Then go ahead and recite your mourning.’

He began his recitation, and I was the only listener in the room.

I have a habit that when the reciter begins, I place my hand over my face and do not look at the gathering.

While my hand was still over my face, so many people came in that the room was filled. I kept adjusting myself so that there would be space next to me for another person.

When the recitation was finished, I saw that I was still the only person present, and there was no one else in the room.”

The late Āyatullāh Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn Mashkūr, known as “Nūrī Mashkūr,” passed away in Qom around 1424 AH and was buried in the Sheykhān cemetery.

(4) The late Ḥājj Raḍā Qolī Akhrawī in the city of Khoy, for over fifty years, used to hold majlis for Imam Husain (a.s.) during the days of Ashura, on Fridays, and on the days of commemorating deaths. After he passed away, his son Ḥājj Mahdī Akhrawī (who died in 1377 SH) decided to stop these gatherings.

One day, on his way back from visiting the graves, he encountered a stranger who said to him:

“Do not stop holding the mourning gatherings.”【1】

(5) The late Ḥājj Riḍā Qolī Akhrawī one night, in a dream, was honored with the presence of Lady Fāṭimah (peace be upon her). Lady Fāṭimah said to him:

“Tell Ḥājj Ḥusain, the son of Āqā-yi Mīr-Fattāḥ, to hold ten days of mourning in this ḥusainiyya.”

The late Akhrawī conveyed the Lady’s message to him, and he held a ten-night mourning program in his ḥusainiyya during the last ten days of Ṣafar. 【2】

(6) On Friday, 2/2/1387 (solar), equivalent to 18 Rabīʿ al-Thānī 1429 AH, the respected friend Āqā-yi Sarhang Ẓafar-Khwāh said:

“Last year I suffered a stroke. I regained consciousness in the hospital, and I heard my wife saying, ‘How can someone who serves in a ḥusainiyya not be able to get his own healing?’

I could not speak, so in my heart I turned to Imam Riḍā (a.s.) and sought his intercession. I felt strength return to me, opened my eyes, and my condition improved.

When the doctor saw the test results, he said: ‘These tests show you have no problem.’

I said: ‘Yes, Imam Riḍā (a.s.) has given me his care.’

A few days later I felt a similar problem again, so I confided to Imam Ḥusain (a.s.), saying:

‘O my Master! Death is a right, but all my life I have carried your banner from one ḥusainiyya to another — will you not grant me your care at my final hour?’

That night in a dream, I saw two noble dignified men with veils arrive, who said:

‘I have come, and I have brought Abul-Faḍl with me.’

At that moment, the illness was completely removed.”

(7) On Friday, 13/9/1388 (solar), corresponding to 16 Dhū’l-Ḥijjah 1430 AH, the respected eloquent speaker Āqā-yi Maʿrifat, during the fortieth commemoration for the late Shūrīd, in the ḥusainiyya of his Eminence in Qom, said:

“In the Nobar neighborhood of Tabriz, there was a man on his deathbed. His friends from the ḥusainiyya gathered around him, reciting the beliefs of truth to him, and mentioning the names of the Imams (a.s.), and he was responding along with them.

But whenever they reached the blessed name of Imam Ḥusain (a.s.), he would fall silent.

This repeated several times, and everyone was amazed. Then he opened his eyes and said:

‘Do not think badly of me. I have called on “Yā Ḥusain” for sixty years. By God, if he does not come himself, I will not let his name pass over my tongue.’

One of those present, who was a reciter, began reciting poetry. Immediately the dying man sat up and said:

‘Peace be upon you, O Abā ʿAbdillāh,’

and then he surrendered his soul to its Creator.”

“Before the time of Reza Shah, there were around 40 to 50 majālis (mourning gatherings) in Tehran. In the first year after the fall of Reza Shah, the number of majālis in Tehran reached 4,500 — meaning about one hundred times more.”

(9) Then he spoke regarding the Ṭuwayrij procession:

“Before Saddam, every year the Ṭuwayrij procession would reach Karbala around noon, enter from one gate, exit through the Gate of Martyrs, and then proceed to the shrine of Hazrat Abul-Faḍl (a.s.).

Their entrance and exit would take about 20 to 30 minutes.

After Saddam’s fall, instead of entering from one gate, they enter from three gates, and the procession now takes about four to five hours.”

He recited the Qur’anic verse:

“They desire to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will perfect His light, though the disbelievers may be averse.” (Qur’an 61:8)
