The Story of the Companions of the Elephant at the Kaʿbah and Yazid at Karbala

The Story of the Companions of the Elephant at the Kaʿbah and Yazid at Karbala

Twenty-seventh: When the Companions of the Elephant intended to destroy the Kaʿbah, the birds (Abaabeel) cast upon them the small stones of Hell,

striking them upon their heads so that they emerged from their bodies.

And when the companions of dogs and swine—that is, the Banu Umayyah—intended to destroy the household of the Message by killing al-Imam Husain (a.s.), Allah, although He granted them a short respite for several purposes and wisdoms, afterward sent against them people who seized them one by one and punished them with various forms of torment.

Their hands and feet were cut off.

They were burned with fire.

They were boiled in oil.

They were killed.

And afterward their bodies were burned, such as Ibn Ziyad. [1192]

Some of them were themselves burned in fire, such as Akhnas ibn Zayd. [1193]

And it is narrated from the chamberlain of Ibn Ziyad that at times the face of that accursed man would burst into flames, whereupon he would extinguish it. [1194]

Yazid went to sleep at night in a state of drunkenness.

In the morning they found him dead, and his face had become black. [1195]

And all the items that had been plundered from the Imam (a.s.) caught fire, including the meat of his camels and the perfumes they had taken, such as saffron and other fragrances, as is explained in detail in its proper place. [1196]
