Maryam Ayah 40-41

Qur’an 19:39 — M. H. Shakir: And warn them of the day of intense regret, when the matter shall have been decided; and they are (now) in negligence and they do not believe.

99-/6884 — ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from al-Hasan b. Mahbub, from Abu Walad al-Hannat, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He was asked about His saying, “And warn them of the Day of Regret.” He said: A caller will call out from before Allah—after the people of Paradise have entered Paradise and the people of the Fire have entered the Fire—“O people of Paradise, and O people of the Fire, do you recognize death in any form?” They will say, “No.” Then death will be brought in the form of a white ram and made to stand between Paradise and the Fire. Then all will be called out to: “Look out and behold death!” So they look out; then Allah commands that it be slaughtered. Then it is said: “O people of Paradise, everlastingness—no death ever! And O people of the Fire, everlastingness—no death ever!” And that is His saying, “And warn them of the day of intense regret, when the matter shall have been decided, while they are in heedlessness,” meaning it has been decreed for the people of Paradise to abide therein, and for the people of the Fire to abide therein.

99-/6885 — Muhammad b. Ya‘qub, from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, from Harun b. Muslim, from Mas‘adah b. Sadaqah, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said—in a hadith—Indeed, death vaunted itself; so the Exalted said: Do not boast, for I will slaughter you between the two parties—the people of Paradise and the people of the Fire—then I will never give you life again so that you could be hoped for or feared.

99-/6886 — Ibn Babawayh, from his father, who said: Sa‘d b. ‘Abdillah narrated to us, from al-Qasim b. Muhammad al-Asbahani, from Sulayman b. Dawud, from Hafs b. Ghiyath, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: “The Day of Encounter is the day when the inhabitants of the heaven and the inhabitants of the earth meet. And the Day of Calling is the day when the people of the Fire call out to the people of Paradise: ‘Pour upon us some water or some of that which Allah has provided you’ [1]. And the Day of Mutual Loss is the day when the people of Paradise make the people of the Fire the losers. And the Day of Regret is the day when death is brought forth and slaughtered.”

Qur’an 7:50 — M. H. Shakir: And the inmates of the fire shall call out to the dwellers of the garden: Pour on us some water or of that which Allah has given you. They shall say: Surely Allah has forbidden them both to the unbelievers.

Qur’an 19:40 — M. H. Shakir: Surely We inherit the earth and all those who are on it, and to Us they shall be returned.

Qur’an 19:41 — M. H. Shakir: And mention Ibrahim in the Book; surely he was a truthful man, a prophet.

99-/6887 — ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Everything that Allah has created, Allah will inherit on the Day of Resurrection.

Qur’an 19:42–50 — M. H. Shakir:

19:42 He said to his father: O my father! why do you worship what neither hears nor sees, nor does it avail you in the least?

19:43 O my father! truly the knowledge has come to me which has not come to you, therefore follow me, I will guide you on a right path.

19:44 O my father! serve not the Shaitan, surely the Shaitan is disobedient to the Beneficent Allah.

19:45 O my father! surely I fear lest a punishment from the Beneficent Allah should afflict you so that you should be a friend of the Shaitan.

19:46 He said: Do you dislike my gods, O Ibrahim? If you do not desist I will certainly revile you, and leave me for a time.

19:47 He said: Peace be on you, I will pray to my Lord to forgive you; surely He is ever Affectionate to me.

19:48 And I will withdraw from you and what you call on besides Allah, and I will call upon my Lord; maybe by calling upon my Lord I shall not be unsuccessful.

19:49 So when he withdrew from them and what they worshipped besides Allah, We gave him Ishaq and Yaqoub, and each one of them We made a prophet.

19:50 And We granted to them of Our mercy, and We left (behind them) a truthful mention of eminence for them.

99-/6888 — Ibn Babawayh said: ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Imran al-Daqqaq narrated to me, who said: Hamzah b. al-Qasim al-‘Alawi al-‘Abbasi narrated to us, who said: Ja‘far b. Muhammad b. Malik al-Kufi al-Fazari narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. al-Husayn b. Zayd al-Zayyat narrated to us, who said: Muhammad b. Ziyad al-Azdi, from al-Mufaddal b. ‘Umar, from al-Sadiq Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon them both)—and he mentioned the hadith regarding “when his Lord tried Ibrahim with certain words”—said, as he related: “Then [among those words was] seclusion from family and clan; its meaning is contained in His saying: ‘And I will withdraw from you and what you call upon besides Allah’—the verse. And enjoining right and forbidding wrong—its clarification is in His saying, the Exalted: ‘O my father! why do you worship what neither hears nor sees, nor does it avail you in the least? O my father! truly knowledge has come to me which has not come to you, so follow me; I will guide you on a right path. O my father! do not worship Satan; surely Satan is disobedient to the All-Beneficent. O my father! I fear lest a punishment from the All-Beneficent should touch you, then you would be a friend of Satan.’ And repelling evil with good: that was when his father said to him, ‘Do you dislike my gods, O Ibrahim? If you do not desist, I will surely stone you; and keep away from me for a long time.’ So he said in reply to his father, ‘Peace be upon you! I will ask forgiveness for you of my Lord; surely He is ever gracious to me.’ Then [among the words was] judgment and being joined with the righteous in His saying: ‘My Lord! grant me judgment and join me with the righteous’ [1]—meaning by ‘the righteous’ those who do not judge except by the judgment of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and do not judge by opinions and analogies, until whoever is after him among the proofs testifies truthfully for him. Its clarification is in His saying: ‘And appoint for me a truthful tongue among the later generations’ [2]—he meant in this excellent community. So Allah answered him and made for him and for others of His prophets a truthful tongue among the later ones, and that is ‘Ali b. Abi Talib (peace be upon him). And that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And We left for them a truthful mention of eminence.’”

99-/6889 — Ibn Babawayh said: My father and Muhammad b. al-Hasan (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated to me; they said: Sa‘d b. ‘Abdillah narrated to us, from Ya‘qub b. Yazid, from Muhammad b. Abi ‘Umayr, from Hisham b. Salim, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Ibrahim’s father was an astrologer for Nimrod b. Kan‘an, and Nimrod would not proceed except by his opinion. He looked into the stars one night; in the morning he said, ‘I saw something astonishing in my night.’ Nimrod said to him, ‘And what is it?’”
