S 2 A 200-202

So when you have performed your devotions, then laud Allah as you lauded your fathers, rather a greater lauding. But there are some people who say: Our Lord! give us in this world, and they shall have no resting place in the Hereafter. (M. H. Shakir)

And there are some among them who say: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire. (M. H. Shakir)

They shall have (their) portion of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1028 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub—through Abu ‘Ali al-Ash‘ari, Muhammad b. ‘Abd al-Jabbar, Safwan b. Yahya, Mansur b. Hazim—from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: And remember Allah during the appointed days [1]. He said: They are the Days of Tashriq. When they were in Mina after the sacrifice, they would boast; a man among them would say: “My father used to do such and such.” So Allah—glorious is His praise—said: Then when you pour forth from ‘Arafat [2], remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with more intense remembrance. He said: And the takbir is: Allahu akbar, Allahu akbar, la ilaha illa Allah, wa Allahu akbar [3], wa lillahi’l-hamd, Allahu akbar ‘ala ma hadana, Allahu akbar ‘ala ma razaqana min bahimati’l-an‘am.

99-/1029 _2- From him—from a group of our companions, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from Jamil b. Salih—from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding the words of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter. He said: Allah’s good pleasure and the Garden in the Hereafter; livelihood and good character in this world.

99-/1030 _3- And from him—from ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, from his father, and ‘Ali b. Muhammad al-Qashani, both—from al-Qasim b. Muhammad, from Sulayman b. Dawud al-Minqari, from Sufyan b. ‘Uyaynah—from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He said: A man questioned my father after he had returned from the Standing (at ‘Arafat). He said: “Do you think Allah answers [4] all of these people?” My father said: No one has stood at this Station except that Allah forgives him—whether believer or unbeliever—only that their forgiveness is in three ranks: a believer whom Allah forgives what has preceded of his sin and what will follow, and He frees him from the Fire; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: Our Lord! grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the chastisement of the fire. They shall have (their) portion of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning. And among them is one for whom Allah forgives what has preceded of his sin, and it is said to him: “Do good in what remains of your life”; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: So whoever hastens off in two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever delays, there is no sin on him [1]—meaning: whoever dies before it passes, there is no sin on him; and whoever delays, there is no sin on him—(this is) for whoever avoids the major sins. As for the common folk, they say: So whoever hastens off in two days, there is no sin on him—meaning, in the first departure; and whoever delays, there is no sin on him [2]—meaning, for whoever avoids hunting. Do you think that Allah would prohibit hunting after He has made it lawful in His saying, Mighty and Majestic: and when you are free from the obligations of the pilgrimage, then hunt; while in the explanation of the common folk its meaning is: when you are free from the obligations of the pilgrimage, then avoid hunting. And an unbeliever who stands at this Station desiring the adornment of the worldly life—Allah forgives him what has preceded of his sin if he repents from shirk in what remains of his life; and if he does not repent, He will pay him his recompense and will not deprive him of the reward of this Station; and that is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: Whoever desires this world’s life and its adornment—We will fully repay them their deeds therein, and they shall not be made to suffer loss therein; these are they for whom there is nothing in the Hereafter but the Fire, and what they wrought in it shall go for nothing, and vain is what they do [3].

99-/1031 _4- Al-‘Ayyashi—from Muhammad b. Muslim, who said: I asked Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about Allah’s words: So remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with more intense remembrance. He said: A man in the Jahiliyya would say, “My father was such and such, and my father was such and such,” so this verse was sent down regarding that.

99-/1032 _5- From Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him); and al-Husayn, from Fadala b. Ayyub, from al-‘Ala’, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), concerning Allah’s words, with exactly the same meaning: that is, they used to boast of their fathers, saying, “My father is the one who paid bloodwits, and the one who fought such and such,” when they were in Mina after the sacrifice; and they also used to say—swearing by their fathers—“No, by my father; no, by my father.”

99-/1033 _6- From Zurara, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: I asked him about His words: So remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with more intense remembrance. He said: Part of what the people of Jahiliyya used to say was: “No, by your father!” and “Yes, by your father!” So they were commanded to say: “No, by Allah!” and “Yes, by Allah!”

99-/1034 _7- And he narrated from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His words: So remember Allah as you remember your fathers, or with more intense remembrance. He said: A man would say, “My father was such and such; my father was such and such.” So it was sent down upon them regarding that.

99-/1037 _10- Abu ‘Ali al-Tabrisi, regarding His saying: These it is for whom is a portion of what they have earned, and Allah is swift in reckoning—[narrates] from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) that he said: Its meaning is that He will reckon with the creation all at once, just as He provides for them all at once.

And remember Allah during the appointed days; then whoever hastens off in two days, there is no sin on him, and whoever remains behind, there is no sin on him; this is for him who guards (against evil), and be careful (of your duty) to Allah, and know that you shall be gathered together to Him.
