Ar-Ra'd Ayah 7

Translation: And gardens of grapes, that is, orchards, and crops, and date-palms, some growing in clusters from one root and others single; all are watered with one water, yet We make some of them excel others in fruit—some sweet, some sour, some bitter—though they are watered with one water. Most surely there are signs in this for a people who understand. [Qur’an 13:4, M. H. Shakir]

Translation: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, related the saying of the time-deniers from Quraysh, saying: And if you would wonder, then wondrous is their saying: What! when we have become dust, shall we then certainly be (raised) in a new creation? These are they who disbelieve in their Lord, and these it is who shall have chains on their necks, and they shall be the inmates of the fire; in it they shall abide. And they used to ask for the punishment to be hastened; so Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: And they ask you to hasten on the evil before the good, and indeed exemplary punishments have before this come to pass. [Qur’an 13:5-6, M. H. Shakir]

Translation: And most surely your Lord is the Lord of forgiveness to men notwithstanding their injustice, and most surely your Lord is severe in requiting (evil). [Qur’an 13:6, M. H. Shakir]

99-/5442 - Translation: Ibn Babawayh said: Abu ‘Ali al-Husayn ibn Ahmad al-Bayhaqi in Nishapur in the year 352 told us, saying: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-Sawli informed us, saying: Ibn Dhakwan told us, saying: I heard Ibrahim ibn al-‘Abbas say: We were in the session of al-Rida (peace be upon him), and we discussed the major sins and the Mu‘tazilite position about them—that they are not forgiven. Al-Rida (peace be upon him) said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: The Qur’an has been revealed contrary to the statement of the Mu‘tazila; Allah, Glorious is His Majesty, said: “And most surely your Lord is the Lord of forgiveness to men notwithstanding their injustice.” [Qur’an 13:6, M. H. Shakir]

Translation: And those who disbelieve say: Why has not a sign been sent down upon him from his Lord? You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people. [Qur’an 13:7, M. H. Shakir]

99-/5443 - Translation: Ibn Babawayh said: Ahmad ibn Isma‘il told us, saying: Muhammad ibn Hammam told us, from ‘Abdullah ibn Ja‘far al-Himyari, from Musa ibn Muslim, from Mas‘adah, who said: I was with al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) when there came to him an old man, bent over, leaning on his staff. He greeted, and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) returned the greeting. Then the man said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, extend to me your hand so I may kiss it. He gave him his hand,

99-/5443 (cont.) - Translation: He kissed it and then wept. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to him: What makes you weep, O elder? He said: May I be your ransom, I have stood waiting for your Qa’im for one hundred years, saying: this month, this year. My age has advanced, my skin has grown thin, my bones delicate, my term has neared, and I do not see among you what I love; I see you killed and driven into exile, and I see your enemies flying on wings—so how should I not weep?! The eyes of Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) filled with tears, then he said: O elder, if Allah keeps you alive until you see our Qa’im, you will be with us in the highest pinnacle; and if death comes to you, you will come on the Day of Resurrection with the weighty trust of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and we are his weighty trust. He (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I am leaving among you the two weighty things; hold fast to them, you will never go astray: the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl al-Bayt. The elder said: I do not mind, after hearing this report.

99-/5443 (cont.) - Translation: Then he said: O elder, know that our Qa’im will come forth from the loins of al-Hasan; and al-Hasan from the loins of ‘Ali; and ‘Ali from the loins of Muhammad; and Muhammad from the loins of ‘Ali; and ‘Ali from the loins of this son of mine—and he pointed to his son Musa (peace be upon him)—and this one has come from my loins. We are twelve, all of us infallible and purified.

99-/5443 (end) - Translation: The elder said: My master, is some of you superior to others? He said: No; in merit we are equal, but some of us have more knowledge than others. Then he said: O elder, by Allah, were there to remain of the world nothing but a single day, Allah would lengthen that day until our Qa’im, the People of the House, comes forth. Behold, our Shi‘a will fall into a trial and bewilderment during his occultation; there Allah will make firm upon His guidance the sincere. O Allah, help them through that.

99-/5444 - Translation: And from him: ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Muhammad told us, saying: ‘Utbah ibn ‘Abdullah al-Himsi in Mecca, by reading to him in the year 380, told us, saying: ‘Ali ibn Musa al-Ghatfani told us, saying: Ahmad ibn Yusuf al-Himsi told us, saying: Muhammad ibn ‘Ukkashah told me, saying: Husayn ibn Zayd ibn ‘Ali told us, saying: ‘Abdullah ibn al-Hasan, from his father, from al-Hasan (peace be upon him), said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) gave a sermon one day, and after praising and extolling Allah, he said: O people, it is as if I am called and I respond; and indeed I am leaving among you the two weighty things: the Book of Allah and my progeny, my Ahl al-Bayt; if you hold fast to them, you will never go astray. Learn from them and do not teach them, for they are more knowledgeable than you. The earth will never be without them; if it were to be without them, it would sink with its inhabitants. Then he (peace be upon him) said: O Allah, I know that knowledge does not perish nor cut off, and that You do not leave the earth without a proof of Yours over Your creation—manifest yet not obeyed, or fearful and concealed—so that Your proof does not fail and Your friends do not go astray after You have guided them. Those are few in number, yet greatest in rank with Allah. When he descended from his pulpit, I said to him: O Messenger of Allah, are you not the proof over all creation? He said: O Hasan, indeed Allah says: “You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people.” [Qur’an 13:7, M. H. Shakir] I am the warner and ‘Ali is the guide. I said: O Messenger of Allah, then your saying that the earth will not be without a proof? He said: Yes. ‘Ali is the Imam and the proof after me; and you are the Imam and the proof after him; and al-Husayn is the Imam, the proof, and the successor after you; and the All-Subtle, the All-Aware has informed me that there will come forth from the loins of al-Husayn a son named ‘Ali, the namesake of his grandfather ‘Ali. When al-Husayn passes, ‘Ali his son will take charge after him; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah will bring forth from the loins of ‘Ali a son named after me—most resembling me; his knowledge is my knowledge and his judgment is my judgment; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of Muhammad a child named Ja‘far, the most truthful of people in word and deed; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of Ja‘far a child named Musa, the namesake of Musa ibn ‘Imran (peace be upon him), the most devoted of people in worship; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of Musa a son named ‘Ali, the mine of Allah’s knowledge and the locus of His judgment; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah will bring forth from the loins of ‘Ali a child named Muhammad; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of Muhammad a son named ‘Ali; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of ‘Ali a child named al-Hasan; he is the Imam and the proof after his father. And Allah, Exalted, will bring forth from the loins of al-Hasan the Proof, the Qa’im—Imam of his Shi‘a and savior of his friends. He will be concealed until he is not seen; a people will turn back from his affair, and others will remain firm, saying: “When will this promise be, if you are truthful?” [Qur’an 10:48; 21:38; 27:71; 34:29; 36:48; 67:25] And if there were to remain of the world only a single day, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, would lengthen that day until our Qa’im comes forth and fills the earth with equity and justice just as it had been filled with injustice and tyranny. The earth will not be without you. Allah has granted you my knowledge and my understanding; and I have supplicated Allah, Blessed and Exalted, to place knowledge and jurisprudence in my progeny and the progeny of my progeny, my seed and the seed of my seed.

99-/5447 - Translation: And from him: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ari, from al-Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Jumhur, from Muhammad ibn Isma‘il, from Sa‘dan, from Abu Basir, who said: I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): “You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people”? He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) is the warner, and ‘Ali (peace be upon him) is the guide. O Abu Muhammad, is there a guide today? I said: Yes—may I be your ransom—there has never ceased to be from you a guide from a guiding light until it has been entrusted to you. He said: May Allah have mercy on you, O Abu Muhammad. If, when a verse descended upon a man and then that man died, the verse died, the Book would have died—but rather it is living, flowing in those who remain just as it flowed in those who passed.

When he finished, he took the hand of ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and pressed it to his own hand, then said: “You are only a warner”; then he placed his hand upon his chest and said: “and (there is) a guide for every people.” Then he said: O ‘Ali, you are the root of the religion, the beacon of faith, the utmost end of guidance, and the leader of the white-foreheaded (on the Day of Resurrection); I bear witness for you to that.

99-/5453 - Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Hammad, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The warner is the Messenger (may Allah bless him and his family), and the guide is the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and after him the Imams (peace be upon them). And it is His saying: “and (there is) a guide for every people,” meaning: in every time there is a manifest Imam of guidance. This is a refutation of whoever denies that in every age and time there is an Imam, and that the earth is never without a proof—as the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “The earth is never without an Imam who stands by the proof of Allah—either manifest and known, or fearful and concealed—lest the proofs and clear evidences of Allah should be invalidated.” And “guidance” in the Book of Allah has various meanings. Among them is: the Imams (peace be upon them), as in His saying: “and (there is) a guide for every people,” i.e., a manifest Imam; among them is: clarification, as in His saying, Exalted is He: “Is it not yet clear to them…” [Qur’an 32:26, M. H. Shakir], that is, He makes it clear to them; and His saying, Exalted is He: “And as for Thamud, We showed them the way…” [Qur’an 41:17, M. H. Shakir], that is, We made it clear to them; and similar is plentiful. Among them is: reward, as in His saying, Exalted is He: “And (as for) those who strive hard for Us, We will most certainly guide them in Our ways, and Allah is most surely with the doers of good.” [Qur’an 29:69, M. H. Shakir], that is, We will reward them. Among them is: deliverance, as in His saying, Exalted is He: “By no means! surely my Lord is with me: He will show me a way out.” [Qur’an 26:62, M. H. Shakir], that is, He will save me. And among them is: indication, as in His saying, Exalted is He: “And that I should guide you to your Lord…” [Qur’an 79:19, M. H. Shakir], that is, I should direct you.

99-/5457 - Translation: From ‘Abd al-Rahim al-Qasir, who said: I was one day with Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: O ‘Abd al-Rahim. I said: At your service. He said: The saying of Allah: “You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people.” When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I am the warner and ‘Ali is the guide—who is the guide today? He said: I remained silent a long time, then raised my head and said: May I be your ransom, it is among you, inherited one man after another until it has ended with you; you—may I be your ransom—are the guide. He said: You have spoken the truth, O ‘Abd al-Rahim. Verily, the Qur’an is living; it does not die, and the verse is living; it does not die. If the verse, when it descended upon a people, then they died, [also] died, the Qur’an would have died; rather, it flows among those remaining just as it flowed among those who passed.

99-/5459 - Translation: From Burayd ibn Mu‘awiyah, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding Allah’s saying: “You are only a warner and (there is) a guide for every people.” He said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: I am the warner; and in every time there is an Imam from us who guides them to what the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) brought. The guides after him are ‘Ali (peace be upon him), then the trustees after him, one after another. By Allah, it has not departed from us, and it remains among us until the Hour.
