First - Declaring Allah Most High Free from Anthropomorphism (Tajseem)
First — Declaring Allah Most High Free from Anthropomorphism (Tajseem):
Muslim views regarding the Divine Essence (dhāt ilāhiyya) diverge into two opposing directions: tashbīh (anthropomorphism) and ta‘ṭīl (negation or suspension of attributes).
The mushabbihah (those who liken God to creation) claim that the Divine Essence resembles that of a human being, possessing what humans possess — flesh, blood, bones, hair, a head, and eyes — and that He moves from place to place. These are the mujassimah (anthropomorphists), and they form a large and broad group among Muslims.
And the mu‘aṭṭilah (those who negate or suspend) hold that it is impossible for the intellect to know Allah Most High, and that the intellect must be suspended from acquiring such knowledge — except to the extent that is explicitly indicated by the scriptural texts.
Mālik was asked about the statement of Allah, the Exalted: "ثُمَّ اسْتَوى عَلَى الْعَرْشِ" (Then He settled Himself firmly on the Throne) [Surah Ṭāhā 20:5]. He replied: "Istiwa’ (establishment) is known, how it is done is unknown, belief in it is obligatory, and asking about it is an innovation."【3】
These two groups interpret the Qur’anic verses that concern the Divine Essence and the descriptions it contains — such as istiwāʾ (establishment on the Throne), or attributing a hand to Him — in two opposing and conflicting directions.
The viewpoint that stands in contrast to both of the aforementioned directions is the one advocated by Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) — a path that negates tashbīh (anthropomorphism), tajsīm (ascribing a physical body to God), and taʿṭīl (denial of meaningful understanding) altogether. They interpreted the noble Qur’anic verses concerning this matter in light of this balanced approach.
Below, we will review a selection of narrations that have been transmitted in support of this direction.

From Shaykh al-Ṣadūq, who said: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Yaḥyā al-ʿAṭṭār (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, from his father, from Sahl ibn Ziyād, who said:
I wrote to Abū Muḥammad عليهالسلام (Imam al-Ḥasan al-ʿAskarī) in the year 255 AH, saying: "O my master, our companions have differed concerning tawḥīd (Divine Unity). Some of them say He is a body (jism), and some say He is a form (ṣūrah). If you, O my master, would kindly teach me something about this matter—something I can hold fast to and not go beyond—I would be deeply grateful."

He عليهالسلام wrote in his own handwriting:
"You asked about tawḥīd, and this matter is far removed from you. Allah, the Exalted, is One, the Only, the Self-Sufficient (Ṣamad), He begets not, nor is He begotten, and there is none like unto Him. He is the Creator and not created. Blessed and Exalted is He—He creates what He wills of bodies and other things, and He forms what He wills, yet He is not a form Himself. Exalted is His praise, sanctified are His names, and He is far above having any likeness. He is none other than Himself. There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing."
(Qur’an 42:11 — M. H. Shakir: “There is nothing like a likeness of Him; and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.”)
2-/ From him, he said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan ibn Aḥmad ibn al-Walīd (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated to us, who said: Muḥammad ibn al-Ḥasan al-Ṣaffār narrated to us, who said: al-ʿAbbās ibn Maʿrūf narrated to us. He said: Ibn Abī Najrān narrated to us from Ḥammād ibn ʿUthmān, from ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Qaṣīr, who said: I wrote by the hand of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Aʿyān to Abū ʿAbdillāh عليهالسلام with a number of questions, among them: Inform me about Allah, the Mighty and Majestic — is He described by form and delineation? If you see fit — may Allah make me your ransom — to write to me regarding the correct doctrine of Tawḥīd?
2-/ So he عليهالسلام wrote back by the hand of ʿAbd al-Malik ibn Aʿyān: “May Allah have mercy on you — you asked about tawḥīd and about what those before you have gone towards. Exalted is Allah, the One for whom nothing is like Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing. Exalted is Allah above what the describers describe — those who liken Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, to His creation, and who fabricate lies against Allah. And know — may Allah have mercy on you — that the correct doctrine of tawḥīd is that which the Qur’an has brought of the attributes of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. So negate from Allah invalidation and resemblance — neither negation nor anthropomorphism — He is Allah, the firm and existent. Exalted is Allah above what the describers describe. And do not go beyond the Qur’an, lest you go astray after the clarification.”【2】
3-/ From him, by his chain of narration to هشام بن الحكم, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh عليهالسلام regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted: (الرَّحْمنُ عَلَى الْعَرْشِ اسْتَوى) — “The Beneficent One Who is firm in power over the Throne” [Surah Ṭā Hā, 20:5], he عليهالسلام said: “That is how He described Himself, and thus He is — dominant over the Throne, apart from His creation, without the Throne bearing Him, nor the Throne containing Him, nor the Throne enclosing Him. Rather, we say: He is the Bearer of the Throne and the Upholder of the Throne. And we say regarding that what He has said: (وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ السَّماواتِ وَالْأَرْضَ) — ‘His Kursī extends over the heavens and the earth’ [Surah al-Baqarah, 2:255]. So we affirm regarding the Throne and the Kursī what He has affirmed, and we deny that either the Throne or the Kursī contains Him, or that He, Mighty and Majestic, is in need of a place or of anything from among His creation. Rather, His creation are in need of Him.”【5】
4-/ From him, by his chain of narration to ʿAbdullāh ibn Qays, from Abū al-Ḥasan al-Riḍā عليهالسلام, he said: I heard him say regarding the verse (بَلْ يَداهُ مَبْسُوطَتانِ) — “Nay! His two hands are spread out” [Surah al-Māʾidah, 5:64]. So I said to him: “Two hands like this?” — and I gestured with my hands toward his. He said: “No. If it were like that, He would be a created being.”【7】

5-/ From him, by his chain of narration to Abū Jaʿfar, who said: I asked Abū ʿAbdillāh عليهالسلام about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: (وَهُوَ ٱللَّهُ فِي ٱلسَّمَاوَاتِ وَفِي ٱلْأَرْضِ) — “And He is Allah in the heavens and in the earth” [Surah al-Anʿām, 6:3].
He عليهالسلام said: “That is how He is — in every place.”
I said: “With His Essence?”
He said: “Woe to you! Places are dimensions. So if you say He is in a place with His Essence, then it necessitates that you say [He is] in dimensions and such — and that is not so. Rather, He is separate from His creation, encompassing what He has created by His knowledge, power, authority, and sovereignty. His knowledge of what is on earth is not less than [His knowledge of] what is in the heavens. Nothing is distant from Him. All things are the same to Him — in knowledge, power, authority, sovereignty, and encompassment.”【2】
6-/ From him, with his chain of narration to ʿAbd al-Salām ibn Ṣāliḥ al-Harawī, who said: I said to ʿAlī ibn Mūsā al-Riḍā عليهالسلام: “O son of the Messenger of Allah, what is the meaning of the report they narrate that the reward of saying ‘lā ilāha illallāh’ is the vision of the Face of Allah?”
He عليهالسلام said: “O Abā al-Ṣalt, whoever describes Allah with a face like other faces has committed disbelief. Rather, the ‘Face of Allah’ means His Prophets, His Messengers, and His Proofs (peace be upon them all). They are the ones through whom people turn to Allah, and to His religion and knowledge. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: (كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ * وَيَبْقَى وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ) ‘Everyone upon it must pass away, and there remains the Face of your Lord’ [Surah al-Raḥmān, 55:26–27], and He also said: (كُلُّ شَيْءٍ هَالِكٌ إِلَّا وَجْهَهُ) ‘Everything is perishing except His Face’ [Surah al-Qaṣaṣ, 28:88].
So the vision of the Prophets of Allah, His Messengers, and His Proofs عليهمالسلام in their ranks is a tremendous reward on the Day of Judgement. And the Prophet صلىاللهعليهوآلهوسلم said: ‘Whoever hates my household and my progeny shall not see me, nor shall I see him on the Day of Judgement.’ And he also said: ‘Among you are those who will never see me again after departing from me.’
O Abā al-Ṣalt, surely Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He, is not to be described by place, nor can He be perceived by visions or imaginations.”【5】
7-/ From Isḥāq ibn ʿAmmār, from someone who heard it, from Abū ʿAbdillāh عليهالسلام, that he said regarding the words of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: (وَقالَتِ الْيَهُودُ يَدُ اللهِ مَغْلُولَةٌ) “And the Jews said: The hand of Allah is tied up” [Surah al-Mā'idah, 5:64]:
“They did not mean that it is literally like this (i.e., physically), but rather they said: ‘He has finished His affair—He does not increase nor decrease.’ So Allah, Glorious and Exalted is He, refuted their claim by saying: (غُلَّتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَلُعِنُوا بِما قالُوا بَلْ يَداهُ مَبْسُوطَتانِ يُنْفِقُ كَيْفَ يَشاءُ) ‘Their hands shall be shackled and they shall be cursed for what they said. Nay! His two hands are spread out; He expends as He pleases’ [Surah al-Mā'idah, 5:64]. Have you not heard Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, say: (يَمْحُوا اللهُ ما يَشاءُ وَيُثْبِتُ وَعِنْدَهُ أُمُّ الْكِتابِ) ‘Allah effaces what He wills and establishes (what He wills), and with Him is the Mother of the Book’ [Surah al-Raʿd, 13:39]?”【8】
