Translation: In the Book of Allah—three times—then he recited this verse: And on the day when We will raise up a witness out of every nation against them from among themselves, and bring you as a witness against these; and We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything, and a guidance and mercy and good news for those who submit. “Indeed it is from a Book in which is an explanation of everything.” (Qur’an 16:89, M. H. Shakir)

Translation: From ‘Abdullah b. al-Walīd, he said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Allah said to Musa (peace be upon him): And We ordained for him in the tablets an admonition from all things (Qur’an 7:145; Shakir: And We ordained for him in the tablets an admonition from all things), so we know He did not write for Musa (peace be upon him) the whole of everything. And Allah said to ‘Isa (peace be upon him): And that I may make clear to you part of what you differ in (Qur’an 43:63; Shakir: And that I may make clear to you part of that about which you differ). And Allah said to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family): And [We will] bring you as a witness against these; and We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything (Qur’an 16:89; Shakir: And on the day when We will raise up a witness out of every nation against them from among themselves, and bring you as a witness against these; and We have revealed the Book to you explaining clearly everything).”

Translation: From ‘Abd al-Malik b. Sulaymān: He found in the buried cache of al-Zamazī a parchment, its date written as one thousand and two hundred years, in Syriac script with its interpretation in Arabic. He said: When the dispute occurred between Musa b. ‘Imrān and al-Khidr (peace be upon them both) concerning His saying, Mighty and Majestic, in Surat al-Kahf, in the story of the ship, the boy, and the wall, and he returned to his people, his brother Harun asked him about what he had encountered from al-Khidr. He said to him: He possessed knowledge, ignorance of which would not harm [us], but there was something even more wondrous than that. He said: And what is that? He said: While we were standing on the seashore, a bird in the form of a swallow approached, alighted on the sea, took water in its beak and cast it toward the east; then it took [water] a second time and cast it toward the west; then a third time and cast it [toward the south; then a fourth and cast it toward the north; then it took and cast it] toward the sky; then it took and cast it toward the earth; then it took once again and cast it into the sea. Then it fluttered and flew away. We remained astonished, not knowing what the bird intended by its action.

As we were thus, Allah sent to us an angel in human form. He said: Why do I see you two astonished? We said: About what the bird intended by its action. He said: Do you not know what it intended? We said to him: Allah knows best. He said: It says, “By the One who illumined the furthest east and darkened the furthest west, raised the heaven and spread out the earth, Allah shall certainly raise up at the end of time a prophet whose name is Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), he has a legatee whose name is ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and the knowledge of you two together, compared to their knowledge, is like this drop in this sea.”

Translation: Surely Allah enjoins the doing of justice and the doing of good (to others) and the giving to the kindred, and He forbids indecency and evil and rebellion; He admonishes you that you may be mindful. (Qur’an 16:90, M. H. Shakir)

I said: May I be your ransom, we do not recite it thus in the recitation of Zayd. He said: “But we recite it thus in the recitation of ‘Ali (peace be upon him).”

I said: What does He mean by justice? He said: “Bearing witness that there is no god but Allah.” I said: And excellence? He said: “Bearing witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family).” I said: What does He mean by giving the kindred his right? He said: “The delivering of the Imamate [3] from an Imam to an Imam after an Imam.” And [as for] “He forbids indecency and evil,” he said: “The allegiance to so-and-so and so-and-so.”
