Yusuf Ayah 58-82
99-/— English:
He (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted, knows my dislike for that. When I was given a choice between accepting it and being killed, I chose acceptance over being killed. Woe to them! Do they not know that Yusuf (peace be upon him) was a prophet and a messenger; when necessity compelled him to take charge of the ‘Aziz’s treasuries, he said to him: “Place me in authority over the treasures of the land; surely I am a good keeper, knowing well” (Yusuf 12:55, M. H. Shakir). Necessity compelled me to accept that under coercion and compulsion, and when I was at the brink of destruction—while I only entered into this affair as one entering it from the outside. So to Allah is the complaint, and He is the One sought for help.
English (Qur’an 12:58-82, M. H. Shakir):
- 12:58: And Yusuf’s brothers came and went in to him, and he knew them, while they did not recognize him.
- 12:59: And when he furnished them with their provision, he said: Bring to me a brother of yours from your father; do you not see that I give full measure and that I am the best of hosts?
- 12:60: But if you do not bring him to me, you shall have no measure (of corn) from me, nor shall you come near me.
- 12:61: They said: We will strive to make his father yield in respect of him, and we are sure to do (it).
- 12:62: And he said to his servants: Put their money into their bags, that they may know it when they return to their family, so that they may come back.
- 12:63: So when they returned to their father, they said: O our father! The measure is denied to us, therefore send with us our brother, we shall have a measure, and we will most surely guard him.
- 12:64: He said: Shall I trust you with him except as I trusted you with his brother aforetime? But Allah is the best Keeper, and He is the most Merciful of the merciful ones.
- 12:65: And when they opened their goods, they found their money returned to them. They said: O our father! What (more) can we desire? This is our money returned to us, and we shall bring provisions for our family and guard our brother, and have in addition the measure of a camel (load); this is an easy measure.
- 12:66: He said: I will by no means send him with you until you give me a firm covenant in Allah’s name that you will most certainly bring him back to me, unless you are completely surrounded. And when they gave him their covenant, he said: Allah is the One in Whom trust is placed as regards what we say.
- 12:67: And he said: O my sons! Do not (all) enter by one gate and enter by different gates; and I cannot avail you aught against Allah; judgment is only Allah’s; on Him do I rely, and on Him let those who are reliant rely.
- 12:68: And when they entered as their father had bidden them, it availed them naught against Allah, but it was only a desire in the soul of Ya‘qub which he satisfied; and surely he was possessed of knowledge because We had given him knowledge, but most people do not know.
- 12:69: And when they went in to Yusuf, he lodged his brother with himself, saying: I am your brother, therefore grieve not at what they do.
- 12:70: So when he furnished them with their provision, (someone) placed the drinking cup in his brother’s bag. Then a crier cried out: O caravan! you are most surely thieves.
- 12:71: They said while they were facing them: What is it that you miss?
- 12:72: They said: We miss the king’s cup, and he who shall bring it shall have a camel-load, and I am responsible for it.
- 12:73: They said: By Allah! you know for certain that we have not come to make mischief in the land, and we are not thieves.
- 12:74: They said: But what shall be the requital of this, if you are liars?
- 12:75: They said: The requital of this is that he in whose bag it is found shall himself be (held as) the requital; thus do we punish the wrongdoers.
- 12:76: So he began with their bags before the bag of his brother, then he brought it out from his brother’s bag. Thus did We plan for Yusuf; he could not take his brother by the king’s law except that Allah pleased; We raise the degrees of whom We please, and above every one possessed of knowledge is the All-knowing One.
- 12:77: They said: If he steals, a brother of his did indeed steal before; but Yusuf kept it secret in his heart and did not disclose it to them. He said: You are in an evil condition, and Allah knows best what you state.
- 12:78: They said: O chief! he has a father, a very old man, therefore retain one of us in his stead; surely we see you to be of the doers of good.
- 12:79: He said: Allah forbid that we should seize other than him with whom we found our property; for then most surely we should be unjust.
- 12:80: So when they despaired of him, they retired, conferring privately. The eldest of them said: Do you not know that your father took from you a covenant in Allah’s name, and how you fell short of your duty with respect to Yusuf before? Therefore I will by no means depart from this land until my father permits me or Allah decides for me, and He is the best of the judges.
- 12:81: Go back to your father and say: O our father! Your son has committed theft, and we do not bear witness except to what we know, and we are not guardians for the unseen:
- 12:82: And inquire in the town in which we were and the caravan with which we proceeded, and surely we are truthful.
English (Qur’an 12:62, M. H. Shakir):
And he said to his servants: Put their money into their bags, that they may know it when they return to their family, so that they may come back.

99-/5302 - Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-Thumālī, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) who said: “Yusuf ruled Egypt and its deserts; he did not go beyond it to other lands.”

99-/5303 - From Abū Basīr: I heard Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) narrate: “When Ya‘qūb lost Yusuf, his grief and weeping intensified until his eyes turned white from sorrow; he fell into severe need and his condition changed. He used to obtain wheat from Egypt twice a year for his dependents—winter and summer. He sent some of his sons with a small amount of goods to Egypt with a caravan. When they entered upon Yusuf—this was after the ‘Aziz had appointed him over Egypt—Yusuf recognized them but they did not recognize him due to the awe and honor of the king. He said to them: ‘Bring your goods before the other caravans,’ and he told his youths: ‘Hasten the measure for them and give them in full. When you finish, put their goods back into their packs without informing them.’ They did so. Then Yusuf said to them: ‘It has reached me you had two brothers by your father; what became of them?’ They said: ‘As for the elder, a wolf ate him; and the younger we left with his father—he cherishes him and is protective of him.’ He said: ‘I wish you to bring him with you when you come to obtain provisions; if you do not bring him, you shall have no measure from me and do not approach me.’ They said: ‘We will try to win over his father; surely we shall do it’ (Yusuf 12:60–61, M. H. Shakir). When they returned to their father and opened their baggage, they found their goods returned to them and said: ‘O our father, what more can we desire? These are our goods returned to us… so send our brother with us so that we may obtain measure, and indeed we shall guard him.’ He said: ‘Shall I trust you with him except as I trusted you with his brother aforetime?’ (Yusuf 12:65–66, M. H. Shakir).” [2]

99-/5304 - From Abān al-Ahmar, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): When Yusuf’s brothers entered upon him, having brought their brother with them, he set the tables and said: “Let each of you get provisions with his maternal brother at the same table.” They sat while his own brother remained standing. He asked him why, learned he had no maternal brother among them, and sat him with himself. When they finished their outfitting, he ordered the measuring cup to be placed in his brother’s saddle-bag. When they departed, a crier called out: “O caravan, you are surely thieves” (Yusuf 12:70, M. H. Shakir). They returned, and after the search he extracted it from his brother’s bag (Yusuf 12:76, M. H. Shakir). They said: “If he steals, a brother of his did indeed steal before” (Yusuf 12:77, M. H. Shakir).

99-/5305 - From ‘Alī b. Mahzyār … from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): He had prepared food for them. When they entered, he said: “Let all those of one mother sit at one table.” They did so and Binyamīn remained standing. After their exchange, he said to him: “Come, sit with me at my table.” His brothers said: “Indeed Allah has favored Yusuf and his brother over us—even the king has seated him at his own table.”

99-/5306 - From Jābir b. Yazīd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): I asked: Why was the Commander of the Faithful so named? He said: “Because he supplies them with knowledge (yamīruhum al-‘ilm). Have you not heard Allah’s words: ‘And we shall get provision for our family’ (Yusuf 12:65, M. H. Shakir)?”
99-/5307
99-/5307 - From Abū Basīr … from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “There is no good in one who has no taqiyya (dissimulation). Yusuf said: ‘O caravan, you are surely thieves’ (Yusuf 12:70, M. H. Shakir), yet they had not stolen.”

99-/5308 - In the narration of Abū Basīr, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): It was said to him—while I was present—“Sālim b. Hafsa relates from you that you speak in seventy ways and have a way out in all of them?” He said: “What does Sālim want from me? Does he want me to bring the angels? By Allah, even the prophets did not bring them. Indeed, Ibrāhīm said, ‘Surely I am sick’ (al-Saffāt 37:89, M. H. Shakir), yet he was not sick; and he said, ‘Nay, this was done by their chief’ (al-Anbiyā’ 21:63, M. H. Shakir), though their chief did not do it; and Yusuf said, ‘O caravan, you are surely thieves’ (Yusuf 12:70, M. H. Shakir), and by Allah, they had not stolen, nor did he lie.”
99-/5309
99-/5309 - From a man of our companions, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): Concerning Allah’s words in Yusuf: “O caravan, you are surely thieves,” he said: “They had stolen Yusuf from his father. Do you not see that when they said, ‘What is it that you miss?’ they replied, ‘We miss the king’s cup,’ and did not say, ‘You stole the king’s cup’? He only meant, ‘You stole Yusuf from his father.’”

99-/5311 - From Muhammad b. Abī Hamza … from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) regarding “the king’s cup”: “It was a golden goblet. Yusuf’s measuring cup, when they measured with it, would call out in a pleasant voice: ‘May Allah curse the treacherous; do not be treacherous with it.’”
99-/5312
99-/5312 - From Ismā‘īl b. Hammām: al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) said regarding “If he steals, a brother of his did indeed steal before; but Yusuf kept it secret in his heart…” (Yusuf 12:77, M. H. Shakir): “There was for the prophet Ishāq (peace be upon him) a belt (minṭaqa) inherited by prophets and nobles. It was with Yusuf’s paternal aunt, who loved him. When his father requested him back, she contrived by fastening the belt around his waist under his shirt, then claimed it was stolen and found upon him. The ruling of that time was that the thief is handed to the owner of the stolen item; thus she retained him with her.”
99-/5313
99-/5313 - From al-Hasan b. ‘Alī al-Washshā’: I heard al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) say: “The ruling among the Israelites was that if someone stole, he was enslaved for it. Yusuf was with his aunt who loved him; she fastened Ishāq’s belt on him and later it was found, so he remained with her. Therefore, when the cup was found in his brother’s bag and they said, ‘If he steals, a brother of his did indeed steal before,’ they meant the belt. Yusuf kept it hidden in himself and did not reveal it.”
99-/5314
99-/5314 - From al-Husayn b. Abī al-‘Alā’, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): Mentioning the sons of Ya‘qūb, he said: “When they became angry, their anger was so intense that their skins would drip yellow blood. They were saying: ‘Take one of us in his place,’ meaning as recompense; yet he took the one with whom the cup was found.”
99-/5315
99-/5315 - From Hishām b. Sālim …: “When they despaired, the eldest—Yahudhā—said: ‘I shall not depart this land…’ He returned to Yusuf to speak about his brother. Their words escalated until Yahudhā became angry. A small son of Yusuf sat before him playing with a golden pomegranate. Yusuf rolled it toward Yahudhā; the child crawled after it and touched him, and Yahudhā’s anger subsided. After this occurred repeatedly, Yusuf said: ‘Do you know what you did with Yusuf and his brother when you were ignorant?’ (Yusuf 12:89, M. H. Shakir).”
99-/5316
99-/5316 - And in Hishām b. Sālim’s narration: They returned to their father, and Yahudhā stayed behind and entered upon Yusuf to speak about his brother. He grew angry; there was a hair on his shoulder which, when he became enraged, would stand and spurt blood until touched by one of the children of Ya‘qūb. A child of Yusuf touched him and his anger subsided.
99-/5317
99-/5317 - Returning to the narration of ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: When his brothers left, Yusuf said to his brother: “I am your brother Yusuf, so do not grieve at what they used to do” (Yusuf 12:69, M. H. Shakir). He then said to his steward: “Place this measure in his saddle-bag.” After they set off, he sent a crier: “O caravan, you are surely thieves” (Yusuf 12:70, M. H. Shakir).
99-/5318
99-/5318 - Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb … from al-Hasan al-Ṣayqal, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about what we have narrated from Abū Ja‘far concerning Yusuf’s words: “O caravan, you are surely thieves.” He said: “By Allah, they did not steal, and he did not lie. Ibrahim said, ‘Nay, this was done by their chief’ (al-Anbiyā’ 21:63, M. H. Shakir)—by Allah, they did not do it, and he did not lie.” Then Abū ‘Abdillāh said: “Allah loves two and hates two: He loves strutting in ranks (al-khaṭar) between battle lines and loves untruth in reconciliation; He hates strutting on the roads and hates untruth outside of reconciliation. Ibrahim said it intending reconciliation and as an indication; and Yusuf said it intending reconciliation.”

99-/5319 - And from him … from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: ‘There is no lie upon a reconciler.’” Then he recited: “O caravan, you are surely thieves” (Yusuf 12:70, M. H. Shakir), and said: “By Allah, they did not steal and he did not lie,” then recited: “Nay, this was done by their chief” (al-Anbiyā’ 21:63, M. H. Shakir) and said: “By Allah, they did not do it and he did not lie.”

99-/5320 - And from him … from Abū Basīr, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “Taqiyya is from the religion of Allah.” I said: From the religion of Allah? He said: “Yes, by Allah, from the religion of Allah. Yusuf said, ‘O caravan, you are surely thieves’—by Allah, they had not stolen anything; and Ibrāhīm said, ‘Surely I am sick’—by Allah, he was not sick” (Yusuf 12:70; al-Saffāt 37:89, M. H. Shakir).
99-/5321
99-/5321 - Ibn Bābawayh … from Abū Basīr: I heard Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “There is no good in one who has no taqiyya. Yusuf said: ‘O caravan, you are surely thieves,’ though they had not stolen.”
99-/5322
99-/5322 - And from him … from Abū Basīr, who said: Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) said: “Taqiyya is from the religion of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Yusuf said: ‘O caravan, you are surely thieves’—by Allah, they had not stolen anything.”
99-/5323
99-/5323 - And from him … from Hishām b. al-Ḥakam, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), regarding Yusuf’s words: “O caravan, you are surely thieves”: “They did not steal, and he did not lie.”
99-/5324
99-/5324 - And from him … from a man of our companions, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): “‘They stole Yusuf from his father’—that is what he meant.”
99-/5325
99-/5325 - And from him … I said to Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about His saying in Yusuf: “O caravan, you are surely thieves.” He said: “They had stolen Yusuf from his father.”
99-/5326
99-/5326 - Returning to the narration of ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: After the cup was extracted from his brother’s bag, they seized him. Allah says: “Thus did We plan for Yusuf; he could not take his brother by the king’s law except that Allah pleased… and above every one possessed of knowledge is the All-knowing One” (Yusuf 12:76, M. H. Shakir). Al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) was asked about “O caravan, you are surely thieves.” He said: “They did not steal, and Yusuf did not lie; he only meant: ‘You stole Yusuf from his father.’” He also explained that “caravan” (al-‘īr) means “people of the caravan,” like “Ask the town … and the caravan” (Yusuf 12:82, M. H. Shakir), meaning its people.
99-/5327
99-/5327 - Ibn Bābawayh … from Ismā‘īl b. Hammām, from al-Riḍā (peace be upon him): He repeated the account of Ishāq’s inherited belt with Yusuf’s aunt and that, because of that incident, the brothers said: “If he steals, a brother of his did indeed steal before,” alluding to the belt; and “Yusuf kept it secret in himself and did not disclose it” (Yusuf 12:77, M. H. Shakir).
99-/5328
99-/5328 - And from him … from al-Hasan b. ‘Alī al-Washshā’, from al-Riḍā (peace be upon him): He restated that the ruling in Israel was enslavement for theft; the earlier belt incident explains their statement “If he steals…”—they meant the belt.
99-/5329
99-/5329 - ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm … from Abū al-Hasan (peace be upon him): Similar to the foregoing—detailing the belt, the search, and the meaning of their words.
99-/5330
99-/5330 - Returning to ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: They pleaded, “O chief! he has a father, a very old man… take one of us in his stead; surely we see you to be of the doers of good” (Yusuf 12:78, M. H. Shakir). He replied, “Allah forbid that we should seize other than him with whom we found our property; for then most surely we should be unjust” (Yusuf 12:79, M. H. Shakir). When they despaired, the elder vowed not to depart until permitted (Yusuf 12:80–82, M. H. Shakir). The narration repeats the scene of Yahudhā’s anger soothing by the child’s touch.
99-/5331
99-/5331 - Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb … from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) regarding “Surely we see you to be of the doers of good” (Yusuf 12:78, M. H. Shakir): “Yusuf would make room in his assemblies, secure loans for those in need, and help the weak.”
