The Grief of the Tablet (Lawḥ), the Pen (Qalam), and the Throne (ʿArsh)

Type 1

There were two gatherings, although calling them "gatherings" is only figurative.

The first was at the time when his martyrdom was decreed and the Pen was commanded to record it upon the Tablet. Then the Pen and the Tablet became sorrowful.

The second was around the Throne when the angels received the address:

“Surely I am going to place in the earth a khalifah (vicegerent).” (Qur'an 2:30, M. H. Shakir)

Then they said:

“What! wilt Thou place in it such as shall make mischief in it and shed blood?” (Qur'an 2:30, M. H. Shakir)

In some commentaries it is reported that the angels were referring to the event of Karbala, and they spoke these words out of grief and sorrow.

Then came the Divine reply:

“Surely I know what you do not know.” (Qur'an 2:30, M. H. Shakir)
