109. A miracle of Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.):
Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar resembled the Seal of the Prophets (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa ālih) the most in conduct and appearance. In form and dignity, especially on the battlefield, he reminded all of the bravery of Ḥaydar al-Karrār, Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.).¹
His blessed birth was on the 11th of Shaʿbān, year 33 AH.² At the time of his martyrdom, he was 27 years old and, according to agreement among historians, older than Imām Sajjād (a.s.) in age.³
His mother, Laylā, daughter of Abū Murrah ibn ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd al-Thaqafī, came from a noble and esteemed household. Numerous traditions from the Messenger of God affirm the honor and greatness of ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd.⁴
ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd was a prominent figure of Quraysh, to whom reference is made in the Qur’an where Quraysh said:
"لَوْلَا نُزِّلَ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ عَلَىٰ رَجُلٍ مِّنَ الْقَرْيَتَيْنِ عَظِيمٍ"
"Why was this Qur’an not revealed to a great man from one of the two cities?"¹
– meaning either Walīd ibn Mughīrah from Mecca or ʿUrwah ibn Masʿūd from Ṭāʾif.² He also signed the Treaty of Ḥudaybiyyah on behalf of Quraysh.³
Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar certainly had married and had children.
In a ḥadīth from Imām Riḍā (a.s.), his wife was referred to as “umm walad,”⁴ indicating she was a bondwoman and had borne him children.
In a well-authenticated ziyārah narrated from Imām Ṣādiq (a.s.), it is mentioned:
"صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰ عِتْرَتِكَ وَأَهْلِ بَيْتِكَ وَآبَائِكَ وَأَبْنَائِكَ"
"May the blessings of God be upon you, your progeny, your household, your forefathers, and your sons."⁵
This clearly implies he had children and a wife (or wives).
In another phrase of the same ziyārah, it says:
"صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا الْحَسَن"
"May God send blessings upon you, O Abā al-Ḥasan!"⁶
Based on this, his kunya was Abā al-Ḥasan, and perhaps one of his sons was named Ḥasan.
In several phrases of the ziyārah specific to the first day of Rajab, expressions are used about Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar that explicitly imply his infallibility.⁷
Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.) was so beloved to his noble father that during his childhood…

As a child, he once asked his father for grapes out of season. Imām Husain (a.s.), by way of miracle, gave him grapes from beneath the ceiling, near a pillar of the mosque.¹
Perhaps for this very reason, on the Day of ʿĀshūrā, he asked his noble father for water—expecting that he would again quench his thirst through a miracle—so that he could return to the battlefield and fight the enemies of God even better.
Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.) was the first martyr from the Prophet’s household (ṣallallāhu ʿalayhi wa ālih) on the Day of ʿĀshūrā.²
Thus it is stated in his Ziyārah:
السّلام عليك يا أوّل قتيلٍ من نسلِ خيرِ سليلٍ، من سلالةِ إبراهيمَ الخليل؛
Peace be upon you, O first martyr from the lineage of the best offspring, from the progeny of Ibrāhīm al-Khalīl (a.s.).³
This Ziyārah was issued by Imām Hādī (a.s.) in the year 252 AH and is known as Ziyārat al-Nāḥiyah al-Muqaddasah.⁴
Many miracles have been witnessed from Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.), and one of them, reliably documented, is related here:
Around sixty years ago, a Christian man named Sīmun was in charge of the carpentry section of a major company in Ḥiṣārak, Karaj.
One day, a doctor working in that company brought an image of Hazrat ʿAlī Akbar (a.s.) and asked Mr. Sīmun to frame it.
Sīmun asked, “Who is this image of?”
That doctor, to the extent of his knowledge, narrated some virtues and noble qualities of the Hazrat for him.⁵
Sīmun became deeply attached to the image, framed it, and placed it prominently.
At mealtime, he would place the food table in front of it and eat.
He brought out a bottle of wine, opened it, filled a glass, and set it on the table. But when he reached for the glass, he found it empty!
He then reached for the bottle—and it too was empty!
He realized that the person in the image did not want him to be stained by such a drink, and so he manifested this miracle.
Sīmun was deeply moved, his body trembled, and he went to Sayyid Muḥammad Taqī Ashrafī, from whom he learned how to convert to Islam—and he embraced the faith.
This illuminating miracle was narrated directly to the author by the late Āyatullāh Sayyid Nūr al-Dīn Mīlānī (d. 1425 AH / 2004 CE), who had personally heard it from Sayyid Muḥammad Taqī Ashrafī.
Sayyid Muḥammad Taqī Ashrafī was the son of Sayyid ʿAbd al-Ghaffār Māzandarānī (d. 1365 AH), one of the great teachers of Najaf al-Ashraf, a student of Ākhūnd Khorāsānī, and one of the eminent pillars of religious knowledge and ethics of his time.⁶
