He knows the secret and what is yet more hidden.

English: Al-Qasim, from Muhammad ibn ‘Ali al-Kufi, said: Musa ibn Sa‘dan al-Hannat narrated to me, from ‘Abdullah ibn al-Qasim, from ‘Abdullah ibn Muskan, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “He knows the secret and what is yet more hidden.” He said: “The secret is what you have concealed within yourself, and ‘what is yet more hidden’ is what crossed your mind and then you forgot it.”

99-/6986

He knows the secret and what is yet more hidden.

English: Al-Tabrisi: It is narrated from the two lords, al-Baqir and al-Sadiq (peace be upon them): “The secret is what you conceal within yourself, and ‘what is yet more hidden’ is what crossed your mind and then you forgot it.”

English: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: “The secret is what you conceal, and ‘what is yet more hidden’ is what crossed your mind and then you forgot it.” Then the Mighty and Majestic related the story of Musa, and we shall write its account in Surat al-Qasas, if Allah, the Exalted, wills.

20:10 So when he came to it a voice was uttered: O Musa!

20:10 Surely I see a fire; maybe I can bring to you therefrom a live coal or find a guidance at the fire.

20:17 And what is this in your right hand, O Musa!

20:18 He said: This is my staff: I recline on it, and I beat down leaves with it for my sheep, and I have other uses for it.

English: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: In the narration of Abu al-Jarud from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: “I may bring to you therefrom a live coal,” he says: “I will bring you a live coal from the fire so that you may warm yourselves from the cold.” And His saying: “or find a guidance at the fire,” he had lost the way, meaning: “or I may find direction by the fire.” And His saying: “I beat down leaves with it for my sheep,” meaning: I strike the trees with it for my sheep. And: “and I have other uses for it”—out of fear he could not continue speaking, so he gathered his speech and said: “and I have other uses for it,” meaning: other needs.

English: And from him: Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn Muhammad ibn Hatim al-Nawfali, known as al-Kirmani, said: Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad ibn ‘Isa al-Washsha’ al-Baghdadi narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Tahir al-Qummi narrated to us, who said: Muhammad ibn Bahr ibn Sahl al-Shaybani narrated to us, who said: Ahmad ibn Masrur, from Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdullah al-Qummi, from the Qa’im al-Hujjah (peace be upon him)—in a lengthy hadith containing many issues—said: I said: Inform me, O son of the Messenger of Allah, about Allah’s command to His prophet Musa (peace be upon him): “So put off your shoes; surely you are in the sacred valley, Tuwa,” for the jurists of both groups claim they were from the hide of a carcass. He (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever says that has fabricated against Musa (peace be upon him) and has deemed him ignorant in his prophethood. For the matter cannot be void of two possibilities: either Musa’s prayer in them was valid or invalid. If his prayer was valid, then it was permissible for him to wear them in that place when it was not consecrated; and if it was consecrated and purified, it is not more consecrated and purer than prayer. And if his prayer in them was invalid, then he has ascribed to Musa (peace be upon him) that he did not know the lawful from the unlawful, nor what prayer is valid in and what it is not valid in—and this is disbelief.” I said: Then inform me—my master—about its inner meaning. He said: “Musa (peace be upon him) conversed privately with his Lord in the sacred valley and said: ‘My Lord, I have purified my love for You and washed my heart of all besides You’—and he was intensely loving toward his family—so Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said: ‘Remove your sandals,’ that is, remove the love of your family from your heart if your love for Me is pure and your heart washed of inclination to any besides Me.”

English: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Salamah ibn al-Khattab, from ‘Abdullah ibn Muhammad, from Mani‘ ibn al-Hajjaj al-Basri, from Mujashi‘, from Mu‘alla, from Muhammad ibn al-Fayd, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The staff of Musa belonged to Adam; then it came to Shu‘ayb; then it came to Musa ibn ‘Imran. It is with us, and I have encountered it just now; it is green as it was when it was taken from its tree, and it speaks when it is made to speak. It is prepared for our Qa’im (peace be upon him); he will do with it what Musa (peace be upon him) used to do. It terrifies and swallows up what they forge, and it does what it is commanded. When it advances, it swallows up what they forge; two branches are opened for it—one on the ground and the other in the ceiling—with forty cubits between them; it swallows up what they forge with its tongue.”

English: ‘Umar ibn Ibrahim al-Awsi said: It is narrated from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) that he said: “On the night I was taken on the Night Journey to the heaven, Jibril stood in his station, and I was beyond the greetings and speech of every angel. I reached a station where sounds ceased for me, and the living and the dead were the same to me; my heart trembled and my distress increased. Then I heard a caller calling in the tongue of ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib: ‘Stop, O Muhammad, for your Lord is sending blessings.’ I said: How does He send blessings while He has no need to pray to anyone? And how did ‘Ali attain this station? Allah, the Exalted, said: Recite, O Muhammad: ‘He it is Who sends His blessings on you and His angels [33:43]’—and My blessing is mercy for you and your community. As for your hearing the voice of ‘Ali: your brother Musa ibn ‘Imran, when he came to the Mount and witnessed the tremendous matters he witnessed, what he saw distracted him from what was being cast to him, so the thing most beloved to him—his staff—occupied him from awe when I said to him: ‘And what is this in your right hand, O Musa?’ And since ‘Ali was the most beloved of people to you, We called you in his tongue and speech so that the terror in your heart would settle and so you would understand what is being cast to you.” He said: “And I have other uses for it—there are a thousand miracles in it.”
