Ar-Ra'd Ayah 28-29

99-/Q13:28-29) Those who believe and whose hearts are set at rest by the remembrance of Allah; now surely by Allah’s remembrance are the hearts set at rest. Those who believe and do good, a good final state is theirs and a goodly return. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/Note) A hadith explaining the meaning of this verse was mentioned shortly before, under His saying: “Those who fulfill the covenant of Allah and do not break the pact, and those who join what Allah has commanded to be joined,” in the narration of Muhammad b. al-Fudayl from Abū l-Hasan (peace be upon him) [1].

[1] taqaddama fī al-ḥadīth (7) min tafsīr al-āyāt (20-21) min Sūrat al-Ra‘d.

99-/5561) ‘Ali b. Ibrāhīm said: “Those who believe” refers to the Shī‘a, and “the remembrance of Allah” refers to the Commander of the Faithful and the Imams (peace be upon them). Then he said: “Surely by the remembrance of Allah the hearts are set at rest. Those who believe and do good, a good final state is theirs and a goodly return,” meaning a good return.

99-/5562) Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Khālid b. Najīḥ, from Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon them both), regarding His saying: “Surely by the remembrance of Allah the hearts are set at rest.” He said: “By Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family) the hearts are set at rest; he is the remembrance of Allah and His veil.”

99-/5563) And from Anas b. Mālik: he said, the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: “‘Those who believe and whose hearts are set at rest by the remembrance of Allah; surely by the remembrance of Allah the hearts are set at rest.’ Then he said to me: ‘Do you know, O son of Umm Sulaym, who they are?’ I said: ‘Who are they, O Messenger of Allah?’ He said: ‘We, the People of the House, and our Shī‘a.’”

99-/5564) ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm: He said, my father narrated to me, from al-Ḥasan b. Maḥbūb, from ‘Alī b. Ri’āb, from Abū ‘Ubayda, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him): “Ṭūbā is a tree in Paradise, in the abode of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and there is no one of his Shī‘a except that in his abode there is a branch from its branches; and a single leaf of its leaves shades a whole nation among the nations.” And he said: “The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) used to frequently kiss Fāṭima (peace be upon her). ‘Ā’isha found that objectionable. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘O ‘Ā’isha, when I was taken by night to the heaven, I entered Paradise, and Gabriel brought me near to the Tree of Ṭūbā, handed me from its fruits and I ate them. Allah Most High transformed that into water in my loins. When I descended to the earth, I had marital relations with Khadīja and she conceived Fāṭima. Never have I kissed her except that I found the fragrance of the Tree of Ṭūbā from her.’”

99-/5565) And from him: from his father, from Muhammad b. Abī ‘Umayr, from Hishām b. Sālim, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding the account of the Night Journey of the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family). He said about what he saw on the Night Journey: “There was a tree such that if a bird were sent at its base, it would not circle around it in seven hundred years [1]. There is no abode in Paradise except that in it is a bough [2] from it. I said: ‘What is this, O Gabriel?’ He said: ‘This is the Tree of Ṭūbā.’ Allah Most High said: ‘A good final state is theirs and a goodly return.’”

Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), and there is no believer except that in his house there is a branch from its branches. That is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘A good final state is theirs and a goodly return.’”

99-/5567) Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from several of our companions, from Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Khālid, from his father, from ‘Abd Allāh b. al-Qāsim, from Abū Baṣīr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), who said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: The people of religion have signs by which they are known: truthfulness in speech, rendering trusts, fulfilling covenants, maintaining kinship ties, mercy to the weak, little preoccupation with women—or he said: little compliance with women—doing good, good character, magnanimity, and following knowledge and what brings one near to Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘A good final state is theirs and a goodly return.’ And Ṭūbā is a tree in Paradise; its root is in the house of the Prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family); there is no believer except that in his house there is a branch from it. No desire crosses his heart for anything except that it is brought to him by it. If a swift rider traveled in its shade for a hundred years, he would not pass beyond it; and if a crow were to fly from its base, it would not reach its top until it fell down from old age. So desire this! The believer is occupied with himself, and the people are at ease from him. When night covers him, he spreads his face (on the ground) and prostrates to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, with the nobility of his body, conversing with the One who created him for the freeing of his neck. So be thus.” Ibn Bābawayh also transmitted this in his Amālī … and so on.

The Messenger of Allah said to her: ‘O Umm Ayman, what is that in your mantle?’ She said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so, daughter of so-and-so, was married and they scattered (gifts) upon her, so I took some of what was scattered.’ Then Umm Ayman wept. The Messenger of Allah said to her: ‘What makes you weep?’ She said: ‘You married Fāṭima, but nothing was scattered upon her!’ He said to her: ‘Do not weep. By He who sent me with truth as a bearer of glad tidings and a warner, Gabriel, Michael, and Isrāfīl witnessed the contracting of Fāṭima’s marriage, in thousands of angels. Allah ordered Ṭūbā, and it scattered upon them from its garments, fine silk, brocade, pearls, emeralds, rubies, and perfumes. They took from it until they did not know what to do with it. And Allah granted Ṭūbā as part of Fāṭima’s dowry, so it is in the house of ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib.’”

When they separate, their two angels say: ‘May Allah reward you both with good on your own behalf.’ If each of them embraces his companion, a caller calls out: ‘Glad tidings to you both and a goodly return!’ And Ṭūbā is a tree in Paradise; its root is in the abode of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and its branches are in the dwellings of the people of Paradise. When they separate, two noble angels call them: ‘Rejoice, O two friends of Allah, in the honor of Allah; and Paradise lies before you.’”

99-/5573) From Abū Baṣīr, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) used to say: The people of God-consciousness have signs by which they are known: truthfulness in speech, rendering trusts, fulfilling covenants, little incapacity and miserliness, maintaining kinship ties, mercy to the weak, little compliance with women, doing good, good character, forbearance, and following knowledge in that which draws one nearer to Allah: ‘A good final state is theirs and a goodly return.’ And Ṭūbā is a tree in Paradise; its root is in the house of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family). There is no believer except that in his house there is a branch from its branches; he intends nothing in his heart except that this branch brings it to him. If a swift rider traveled in its shade for a hundred years, he would not exit it; and if a crow flew from its base, it would not reach its top until it turned white from old age. So desire this! The believer is occupied with himself, and the people are at ease from him. When the night falls upon him, he spreads his face and prostrates to Allah with the nobility of his body, conversing with the One who created him for the freeing of his neck. So be thus.”

99-/5574) Al-Ṭabrisī: Al-Ḥākim Abū l-Qāsim al-Ḥaskānī related, with his isnād, from Mūsā b. He said: ‘A tree whose root is in my house, and its branches over the people of Paradise.’ Then he was asked about it again, and he said: ‘In the house of ‘Alī.’ He was questioned about that, and said: ‘My house and the house of ‘Alī are in one place in Paradise.’”

99-/5575) And in the book Ṣifat al-Janna wa l-Nār [1], with its isnād from ‘Awf, from Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), from the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family), regarding Allah’s saying: “A good final state is theirs and a goodly return”: “It means a good return. As for Ṭūbā, it is a tree in Paradise; its trunk is in the house of Muhammad (Allah bless him and his family). If a bird were to fly from its trunk, it would not reach its branch before old age killed it. On every leaf of it is an angel who remembers Allah. There is no house in Paradise but that in it is a branch from its branches, and its branches are indeed seen from behind the wall of Paradise, carrying for them what they wish of its ornaments, garments, and fruits. Nothing is taken from it except that Allah restores it as it was, because they earned lawfully, spent moderately, and sent forth a surplus; thus they have prospered and succeeded.”

In it He said to Jesus (peace be upon him) regarding the description of the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family): “The like of him was not seen before him nor after him; sweet of scent; one who marries women; of few progeny—his progeny is only from a blessed woman who has a house in Paradise, in which there is no clamor nor fatigue; he will be entrusted with her in the end of time as Zechariah was entrusted with your mother; she has two young ones who will be martyred. His speech is the Qur’an; his religion is Islam; and I am Peace. Glad tidings to whoever reaches his time, witnesses his days, and hears his speech.” Jesus said: “My Lord, what is Ṭūbā?” He said: “A tree in Paradise—I planted it. It shades the gardens; its root is from Riḍwān; its water is from Tasnīm; its coolness is the coolness of camphor; its taste is the taste of ginger. Whoever drinks a draught from that spring will never thirst thereafter.” Jesus said: “O Allah, give me to drink from it.” He said: “It is forbidden—O Jesus—for mankind to drink from it until that Prophet drinks; and it is forbidden for the nations to drink until the nation of that Prophet drinks. I will raise you up to Me, then I will send you down at the end of time so that you may see the wonders of the nation of that Prophet and help them against the accursed Dajjāl. I will send you down at the time of prayer so that you may pray with them; they are a mercied nation.”

99-/5587) And from the path of the opponents: what Muwafaq b. Aḥmad narrated in his Manāqib: with his isnād from Aḥmad b. ‘Āmir b. Sulaymān, from al-Riḍā ‘Alī b. Mūsā (peace be upon him), who said: “Mūsā b. Ja‘far narrated to me; my father Ja‘far b. Muḥammad narrated to me; my father Muḥammad b. ‘Alī narrated to me; my father ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn narrated to me; my father al-Ḥusayn b. ‘Alī narrated to me; my father ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon them) narrated to me—who said: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: ‘An angel came to me and said: O Muhammad, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, conveys to you peace and says: I have married Fāṭima to ‘Alī, so marry her to him. I have ordered the Tree of Ṭūbā to bear pearls, rubies, and coral. The inhabitants of heaven have rejoiced at that. Two sons will be born from them who are the masters of the youth of Paradise; by them the people of Paradise are adorned. Rejoice, O Muhammad, for you are the best of the first and the last.’” This hadith was also narrated from the path of the Shī‘a by Ibn Bābawayh, from al-Riḍā (peace be upon him) [2].

99-/5588) And from Muwafaq b. Aḥmad: with his isnād, from Bilāl b. Ḥamāma: “The Prophet came out to us one day, his face shining like the disc of the moon. ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. ‘Awf stood and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what is this light?’ He said: ‘Good tidings came to me from my Lord concerning my brother and cousin, and my daughter: Allah Most High has married ‘Alī to Fāṭima, and He ordered Riḍwān—the keeper of the gardens—who shook the Tree of Ṭūbā. It bore slips—meaning certificates—by the number of those who love my Household. He created from beneath it angels of light, and gave to every angel a certificate. When it is the Day of Resurrection and it stands with its people, the angels will call among the creatures; no lover of us, the People of the House, will be encountered but that they will hand him a certificate in which is his release from the Fire. By my brother, my cousin, and my daughter is the freeing of the necks of men and women of my community from the Fire.’”

99-/5589) And from him also: with his isnād from Umm Salama, Salmān al-Fārisī, and ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him)—and all of them said, mentioning the hadith of the marriage of ‘Alī to Fāṭima (peace be upon them both)—that when Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made His angels witness the marriage of Fāṭima to ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon them both), He ordered the Tree of Ṭūbā to scatter its fruit and what it contained of ornaments and garments. The tree scattered what it had, and the angels and the wide-eyed maidens picked it up; indeed the maidens and the angels exchange it and boast of it until the Day of Resurrection.

99-/5590) And from Anas b. Mālik: The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) said: “In Paradise there is a tree called Ṭūbā; there is no house, palace, chamber, or dwelling in Paradise but that in it is a branch from that tree, and its root is in my house.” Then after a time, on another day he said to them: “In Paradise there is a tree called Ṭūbā; there is no palace, house, or dwelling in Paradise but that in it is a branch from that tree, and its root is in the house of ‘Alī.” ‘Umar stood and said: “O Messenger of Allah, did you not tell us about this and say: its root is in my house? Then you told us again and say: its root is in the house of ‘Alī?” The Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) raised his head and said: “Do you not know that my house and the house of ‘Alī are one; my chamber and the chamber of ‘Alī are one; my palace and the palace of ‘Alī are one; my rank and the rank of ‘Alī are one; and my curtain and the curtain of ‘Alī are one.” Then he said: “When one of us intends to go to his family, how does he do?” The Prophet said: “When one of us intends to go to his family, Allah sets a veil of light between me and him; when we finish that need, Allah lifts that veil from us.” Thus ‘Umar recognized the right of ‘Alī (peace be upon him).
