Hud Ayah 50-53

99-/5121 _44- Abu Basir narrated from Abu al-Hasan Musa (peace be upon him), who said: “Noah was in the Ark, and he remained in it as long as Allah willed. It had been commanded, so Noah let it go on its way. Then Allah revealed to the mountains: ‘I am placing the Ark of My servant Noah upon one of you.’ The mountains stretched themselves high and raised their heads, except for al-Judi, which is a mountain in Mosul. The prow of the ship struck the mountain, and Noah then said: ‘My Lord, atqin,’ which in Arabic means: ‘My Lord, set it right.’”

99-/5122 _45- Kathir al-Nawwa’ narrated from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “Noah heard the creaking of the ship upon al-Judi and feared for it. He put his head out of a small window it had, raised his hand, and gestured with his finger while saying: ‘O Rahman, atqin,’ meaning: ‘My Lord, do well [with it].’”

99-/5123 _46- ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Abi al-Daylam narrated from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When Noah boarded the Ark, it was said: ‘Away with the wrongdoing people.’”

99-/5124 _47- From al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali al-Washsha’, who said: I heard al-Rida (peace be upon him) say: “Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Indeed Allah said to Noah: ‘He is not of your family’ because he opposed him, and He made whoever followed him to be of his family.” He said: And he asked me: “How do they recite this verse regarding Noah?” I said: People recite it in two ways: ‘He is an unrighteous deed’ and ‘He acted unrighteously.’ He said: “They have lied. He was his son, but Allah dissociated him from him when he opposed him in his religion.”

[Hud 11:50-53] And to ‘Ad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; you are nothing but forgers (of lies). O my people! I do not ask you any reward for it; my reward is only with Him Who created me; do you not then understand? — to His saying — And we are not going to desert our gods for your saying, and we are not going to believe in you. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5125 _1- Ibn Shahr Ashub: It was said to Zayn al-‘Abidin (peace be upon him): Your grandfather used to say: “Our brothers transgressed against us.”

99-/5126 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: He said: Indeed, the land of ‘Ad was in the desert, from the east to al-Ajfar, a distance of four stations. They had many crops and date palms, and they had long lifespans and large bodies. They worshiped idols, so Allah sent Hud to them, calling them to Islam and to cast off equals [to Allah]. They refused and did not believe in Hud, and they harmed him. The sky withheld [rain] from them for seven years until they suffered drought. Hud was a farmer who irrigated crops. A group came to his door asking for him, and an elderly, one-eyed grey-haired woman came out to them. She said: “Who are you?” They said: “We are from such-and-such land. Our land has become barren, so we came to Hud to ask him to supplicate to Allah for us so that we may be rained upon and our land become fertile.” She said: “Had Hud’s prayer been answered, he would have prayed for himself, for his crops have burned up due to lack of water.” They said: “Where is he?” She said: “He is in such-and-such place.” They came to him and said: “O Prophet of Allah, our land has become barren and we have not been rained upon. Ask Allah that our land become fertile and that it rain.” He prepared for prayer, prayed, and supplicated for them, and then said to them: “Return, for you have been rained upon and your land has become fertile.” They said: “O Prophet of Allah, we saw something astonishing.” He said: “What did you see?” They said: “We saw in your home an elderly, one-eyed grey-haired woman who said to us: ‘Who are you and what do you want?’ We said: ‘We came to the Prophet of Allah, Hud, to supplicate to Allah for us so that it may rain.’ She said: ‘If Hud were one whose supplication is answered, he would have prayed for himself, for his crops have burned up.’” Hud said: “That is my family member, and I pray to Allah for her long life and survival.” They said: “How is that?” He said: “Because Allah has not created a believer except that he has an enemy who harms him, and she is my enemy. For my enemy to be someone I control is better than for my enemy to be someone who controls me.” Hud remained among his people calling them to Allah and forbidding them from idol worship until their land became fertile and Allah sent down rain upon them. This is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him; He will send on you clouds pouring down abundance of rain, and add strength to your strength, and do not turn back guilty.’ They said, as Allah relates: ‘O Hud! you have not brought to us any clear argument, and we are not going to desert our gods for your saying, and we are not going to believe in you’—so when they did not believe, Allah sent upon them the violent wind, meaning a cold wind. This is His saying in Surat al-Qamar: ‘Ad treated (the truth) as a lie, so how (great) was My punishment and My warnings! Surely We sent on them a tornado in a day of bitter ill-luck;’ and He related in Surat al-Haqqah, saying: ‘And as to ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent wind.’”

[Hud 11:52] And O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn to Him; He will send on you clouds pouring down abundance of rain, and add strength to your strength, and do not turn back guilty. (M. H. Shakir)

[Hud 11:53] They said: O Hud! you have not brought to us any clear argument, and we are not going to desert our gods for your saying, and we are not going to believe in you. (M. H. Shakir)

[Qamar 54:18-19] ‘Ad treated (the truth) as a lie, so how (great) was My punishment and My warnings! Surely We sent on them a tornado in a day of bitter ill-luck. (M. H. Shakir)

[Haqqah 69:6] And as to ‘Ad, they were destroyed by a roaring, violent wind, (M. H. Shakir)

He said: The Moon was inauspicious with Saturn for seven nights and eight days.

99-/5127 _3- Then ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The barren wind comes out from beneath the seven earths, and nothing has ever come out from it except upon the people of ‘Ad when Allah was angry with them. He commanded the keepers to let out from it [an opening] like the breadth of a ring, but it defied the keepers, and there came out of it something like the size of a bull’s nostril, out of its rage against the people of ‘Ad. So the keepers cried out to Allah because of that, and said: ‘Our Lord, it has rebelled against us, and we fear that those of Your creation who did not disobey You and the inhabitants of Your lands may perish.’ Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent Gabriel, who pushed it back with his wing and said to it: ‘Come out as you were commanded.’ So it returned and came out as it was commanded, and it destroyed the people of ‘Ad and whoever was in their vicinity.”

99-/5128 _4- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him)—in a hadith—who said: “As for the barren wind, it is a wind of punishment; it leaves nothing of wombs [i.e., offspring] nor anything of vegetation. It is a wind that comes out from beneath the seven earths, and no wind has ever come out from it except upon the people of ‘Ad when Allah, Exalted, was angry with them.” And he mentioned the hadith as above with slight variation in some wording.

[Hud 11:56] Surely my Lord is on the straight path. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/5129 _1- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Ma‘mar al-Sa‘di, who said: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said regarding His saying, ‘Surely my Lord is on the straight path’: “It means that He is upon the truth; He recompenses good with good and evil with evil, and He pardons whom He wills and forgives—Glorified and Exalted.”

[Hud 11:61] And to Thamud (We sent) their brother Salih. He said: O my people! serve Allah, you have no god other than Him; He brought you into being from the earth, and made you dwell in it; therefore ask forgiveness of Him, then turn to Him; surely my Lord is Near, Answering. (M. H. Shakir)
