99-/6786 - The Shaykh in his Amali said: Ibn al-Salt informed us, who said Ibn ‘Uqdah informed us, who said Abu al-Hasan al-Qasim ibn Ja‘far ibn Ahmad ibn ‘Imran [1], known as Ibn al-Shami, read to us and said: ‘Abbad ibn Ahmad al-‘Arzami [2] narrated to us, who said my uncle narrated to me from his father, from Jabir, from al-Sha‘bi, from Abu Rafi‘, from Hudhayfa ibn al-Yaman, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), regarding the people of Ya’juj and Ma’juj. He said: Indeed, the people chip away at the dam with their pickaxes tirelessly. When night falls, they say: “Tomorrow we will finish,” but in the morning they find it stronger than it was the previous day, until a man among them submits (to God) at the time when God wills to bring His decree to completion. Then the believer will say: “Tomorrow we will open it, if God wills.” In the morning they go to it, and God opens it. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, a man among them will pass by the bank of the valley that is at Kufan, after they have drunk it dry, and he will say: “By God, I once saw this valley when water flowed across its breadth.” It was asked: O Messenger of God, when will this be? He said: When nothing remains of this world except like the drippings [3] left in a vessel.

99-/6787 - Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Ash‘ari, from Mu‘alla ibn Muhammad, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Abdillah, from al-‘Abbas ibn al-‘Ala’, from Mujahid, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was asked about creation. He said: God created one thousand and two hundred (species) on land, and one thousand and two hundred in the sea; the kinds of the Children of Adam are seventy kinds, and people are the offspring of Adam—except for Ya’juj and Ma’juj.

99-/6788 - And some of our Imami scholars narrated in a book he called “Manhaj al-Tahqiq ila Sawa’ al-Tariq,” from Salman al-Farisi (may God be pleased with him), who said: We were sitting with the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) in his house when allegiance was given to ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab. He said: Present were I, al-Hasan and al-Husayn (peace be upon them), Muhammad ibn al-Hanafiyyah, Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr, ‘Ammar ibn Yasir, and al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad al-Kindi (may God be pleased with them). His son al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said to him: “O Commander of the Faithful, Solomon (peace be upon him) asked his Lord for a kingdom that would not be fitting for anyone after him, and He granted it to him. Have you possessed any of what Solomon son of David (peace be upon him) possessed?” He (peace be upon him) said: “By Him Who split the seed and created the soul, Solomon son of David (peace be upon him) asked God, Mighty and Majestic, for kingship and He granted it to him; and your father has possessed what none before him after your grandfather, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), has possessed, and none after him will possess it.” Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “We would like you to show us something of the honor with which God Most High has favored you.”

99-/6788 - He said: “I will do so, God Most High willing.” The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) rose, performed ablution, prayed two units, and supplicated God, Mighty and Majestic, with invocations none of us understood. Then he gestured toward the west; no sooner had he done so than a cloud came and alighted upon the house, and beside it another cloud appeared. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “O cloud, descend by the leave of God Most High.” It descended, saying: “I bear witness that there is no god but God, that Muhammad is the Messenger of God, and that you are His successor and legatee. Whoever doubts you has strayed from the path of salvation.” Then the cloud spread out over the ground as if it were a laid carpet. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Sit upon the cloud.” We sat and took our places. He gestured to the other cloud; it descended saying as the first. The Commander of the Faithful sat upon it, then spoke words and signaled them to proceed westward. A wind entered beneath the two clouds, lifting them gently, inclining them toward the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him); and there he was upon a chair, light shining from his face, his face more radiant than the moon. Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “O Commander of the Faithful, Solomon son of David (peace be upon him) was obeyed by means of his ring; by what is the Commander of the Faithful obeyed?” He (peace be upon him) said: “I am the eye of God on His earth and His speaking tongue among His creation. I am the light of God that is not extinguished. I am the gate of God through which one comes, and His proof over His servants.” Then he said: “Do you wish me to show you the ring of Solomon son of David (peace be upon him)?” We said: Yes. He put his hand into his pocket and brought out a gold ring with a red ruby; upon it was inscribed: Muhammad and ‘Ali. Salman said: We marveled at that. He said: “What causes your amazement? What is there to marvel at about someone like me? Today I will show you what you have never seen.” Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “I want you to show me Ya’juj and Ma’juj and the dam between us and them.” The wind bore the clouds, and we heard its roar like thunder as it rose into the air, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) leading us, until we reached a mountain towering high. There was a lifeless tree whose leaves had fallen and branches had withered. Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “Why has this tree dried?” He said to him: “Ask it, for it will answer you.” Al-Hasan (peace be upon him) said: “O tree, what has happened to you that we see this dryness?” It did not answer him. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “You must answer him.” The narrator said: By God, I heard it say: “At your service, at your service, O legatee of the Messenger of God and his successor.” Then it said: “O Abu Muhammad, your father, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), used to come to me every night at the time before dawn, pray two units by me, and abundantly glorify (God). When he finished his supplication, a white cloud would come to him, exuding the scent of musk; upon it was a chair, and he would sit upon it and it would convey him. I lived by his sitting and its blessing. This has been cut off from me for forty days; that is the cause of what you see of me.” The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) rose, prayed two units, and wiped his palm over it; it turned green and returned to its state. He commanded the wind, and it moved us on, until we came upon an angel whose hand was in the west and the other in the east. When the angel looked at the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), he said: “I bear witness there is no god but God, alone without partner; and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger; He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all religion, though the polytheists may detest it; and I bear witness that you are truly and verily his legatee and successor.” I said: O Commander of the Faithful, who is this whose hand is in the west and his other in the east? The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “This is the angel whom God Most High has charged with the darkness of night and the light of day; he will not depart until the Day of Resurrection. And God Most High has placed the affair of the world with me, and the deeds of the servants are presented to me every day, then they are raised to God Most High.” Then we journeyed until we stood at the dam of Ya’juj and Ma’juj. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to the wind: “Set us down at the side of that mountain,” and he gestured to a mountain towering high, which is the mountain of al-Khidr (peace be upon him). We looked at the dam; its height was beyond the limit of sight, black like a piece of pitch-dark night [1], and smoke issued from its sides. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “O Abu Muhammad, I am the one in charge of the affair over these creatures.” Salman said: I saw three kinds: the height of one of them was one hundred and twenty cubits; the second kind, each one was sixty cubits tall; and the third spread one ear beneath himself and wrapped himself with the other. Then the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) ordered the wind, and it carried us to Mount Qaf [2]. We reached it, and it was of green emerald, and upon it was an angel in the form of an eagle. He looked at the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). The angel said: “Peace be upon you, O legatee of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds and his successor. Do you permit me to return?” He returned his greeting and said: “If you wish, speak; and if you wish, I will inform you of what you intend to ask me.” The angel said: Rather, you say, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: “You want me to permit you to visit al-Khidr (peace be upon him).” He said: Yes. He said: “I have permitted you.” The angel hastened, saying: “In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Ever-Merciful.” We walked a little upon the mountain, then the angel returned to his place after visiting al-Khidr (peace be upon him). Salman said: O Commander of the Faithful, I saw that the angel did not visit al-Khidr except after taking your permission. He (peace be upon him) said: “By Him Who raised the heaven without pillars, if one of them tried to move from his place by the measure of a single breath, he would not move until I permit him. So too will be the case of my son [3] al-Hasan, and after him al-Husayn, and nine from the progeny of al-Husayn, the ninth of them is their Qa’im.” We said: What is the name of the angel charged with Qaf? He (peace be upon him) said: “Tarja’il [4].” We said: O Commander of the Faithful, how do you come to this place every night and return? He said: “As I brought you. By Him Who split the seed and created the soul, I possess the kingdom of the heavens and the earth—were you to know even some of it, your hearts could not bear it. The Greatest Name of God consists of seventy-three letters. Asaf son of Barkhiyya had but one letter; he spoke it, and God Most High collapsed the earth between him and Bilqis’s throne so that he took hold of the throne, and then the earth returned as it was, swifter than a blink of the eye. With us—by God—are seventy-two letters, and one letter is with God Most High which He has reserved to Himself in the knowledge of the unseen. There is no power nor strength save in God, the Most High, the Most Great. Whoever knows us, knows us; and whoever denies us, denies us.” Then he (peace be upon him) rose, and we rose; and there, on the mountain, was a youth praying between two graves. We said: O Commander of the Faithful, who is this youth? He (peace be upon him) said: “Salih the Prophet (peace be upon him), and these two graves are for his mother and father; he worships God between them.” When Salih looked at him, he could not restrain himself till he wept, gesturing with his hand to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), then returning to his prayer weeping. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) stood by him until he finished his prayer. We said to him: What makes you weep? Salih said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) used to pass by me every morning and sit, and my worship would increase by looking at him. This has been cut off for ten days, and it has distressed me.” We marveled at that. He (peace be upon him) said: “Do you want me to show you Solomon son of David (peace be upon them)?” We said: Yes. He arose and we with him, and he led us into a garden the like of which we had never seen, containing all fruits and grapes, with rivers flowing, and birds calling one another upon the trees. When the birds saw him, they came fluttering around him until we reached the midst of the garden. There was a couch upon which lay a youth on his back with his hand upon his chest. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) brought out the ring from his pocket and placed it upon Solomon’s (peace be upon him) finger; he rose standing and said: “Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Faithful, legatee of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds. By God, you are the Greatest Siddiq and the Greatest Faruq. Successful is he who clings to you, and disappointed and lost is he who falls behind you. I asked God Most High by you, O People of the House, and I was granted that kingship.” Salman said: When we heard the words of Solomon son of David (peace be upon him), I could not restrain myself until I fell at the feet of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), kissing them, and I praised God Most High for His abundant bestowal in guiding me to the guardianship of the People of the House (peace be upon them), those from whom God has removed impurity and purified with a thorough purification. My companions did as I did. Then I asked the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him): What lies beyond Qaf? He (peace be upon him) said: “Beyond it is that to which your knowledge does not reach.” We said: Do you know that, O Commander of the Faithful? He (peace be upon him) said: “My knowledge of what lies beyond it is like my knowledge of the state of this world and what is in it; and indeed I am its Guardian and Witness after the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and so too will be the legatees from my offspring after me.” Then he (peace be upon him) said: “I am more knowledgeable of the pathways of the heavens than the pathways of the earth. We are the hidden, safeguarded Name; we are the Most Beautiful Names by which, when God Most High is invoked, He answers; we are the Names written upon the Throne, the Chair, Paradise, and Hell; and from us the angels learned glorification, sanctification, unification, tahlil, and takbir. We are the words which Adam (peace be upon him) received from his Lord, and He turned to him in mercy.” He said: “Do you want me to show you a wonder?” We said: Yes. He said: “Close your eyes.” We did so. Then he said: “Open them,” and we opened them, and behold we were in a city greater than any we had seen; its markets were standing, and its people were of a stature greater than any we had seen, as tall as date palms. We said: O Commander of the Faithful, who are these? He said: “The remnant of the people of ‘Ad, unbelievers who do not believe in God Most High. I wished to show them to you, and I intend to destroy this city and its people while they are unaware.” We said: O Commander of the Faithful, will you destroy them without a proof? He said: “No, but with a proof against them.” He approached them and manifested himself to them; they sought to kill him while we saw them and they saw us. Then he moved away from them and drew near to us, wiped his hand over our chests, and thundered among them a thunder. Salman said: We thought the earth had overturned and the sky had fallen, and that bolts of lightning had issued from his mouth; none of them remained alive in that hour. We said: O Commander of the Faithful, what did God do to them? He said: “They perished and all of them entered the Fire.” We said: This is a miracle the like of which we have never seen or heard. He (peace be upon him) said: “Do you want me to show you more wondrous than that?” We said: We cannot bear with our hearts to endure anything further. Upon whoever does not befriend you and believe in your virtue and your great station with God Most High be the curse of God, the curse of the cursers, of people and of the angels altogether until the Day of Judgment. Then we asked him to return us to our homelands. He said: “I will do that, God Most High willing,” and gestured to the two clouds, and they drew near us. He said: “Take your places,” and we sat upon one cloud while he (peace be upon him) sat upon the other. He ordered the wind and it carried us until we were in the air, so high that the earth appeared to us like a dirham. Then it set us down in the house of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) in less than a blink of the eye. We arrived at Medina at midday while the mu’adhdhin was calling the adhan, though we had left when the sun was high. I said: By God, what a marvel: we were at Mount Qaf, a journey of five years’ distance [1], and we returned in five hours of the day! The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “If I willed to pierce through the entire world and the seven heavens and return in less than a blink, I would do so—by what I possess of the Greatest Name of God.” We said: O Commander of the Faithful, by God you are the Greatest Sign and the dazzling miracle, after your brother and cousin, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

99-/6789 - And it is narrated with this chain from Salman al-Farisi (may God be pleased with him), who said: We were with the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), and I said to him: O Commander of the Faithful, I would love to see something of your miracles. He said: “O Salman, what do you wish?” I said: I wish you to show me the she-camel of Thamud and something of your miracles. He said: “I will do so, God Most High willing.” Then he rose, entered his house, and came out mounted upon a black horse [2], wearing a white qabā’ [3] and a white qalansuwah [4]. Then he called: “O Qanbar, bring me that horse,” and a black dappled horse [5] was brought to him. He said: “Mount, O Abu ‘Abdillah.” Salman said: I mounted it, and it had two wings joined along its sides. The Imam (peace be upon him) cried out to it, and it rose into the air. By God, I heard the beating [6] of the angels’ wings and their glorification beneath the Throne. Then we arrived at the seashore, and it was a roaring sea [7], churning with waves. The Imam (peace be upon him) looked at it askance, and the sea calmed from its boiling. I said to him: My master, the sea calmed from your look at it? He said: “It feared that I would command something concerning it.”

Then he took my hand and walked upon the surface of the water, the horses following us without a guide. By God, neither our feet nor the horses’ hooves became wet. Salman said: We crossed that sea until we came to an island abundant in trees, fruits, birds, and rivers. There was a great tree without trunk or blossom. He, upon whom be God’s blessings, shook it with a staff in his hand; it split, and from it emerged a she-camel eighty cubits tall and forty cubits broad, followed by a young she-camel. He said to me: “Draw near it and drink from its milk until you are satiated.” I drew near and drank until I was filled; its milk was sweeter than honey and softer than butter. He said to me: “O Salman, is this good?” I said: My master, what could be better than it! He said: “Do you want me to show you what is better than it?” I said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. He called out: “Come forth, O Fair One [1]!” Then there came forth to us a she-camel one hundred and twenty cubits tall and sixty cubits broad; its head was of red ruby, its chest of ash-colored ambergris, its legs of green chrysolite, its halter of green ruby, its right flank of gold, its left flank of silver, its breadth of fresh pearls. He said to me: “O Salman, drink from its milk.” Salman said: I took [2] its teat into my mouth, and lo! it gave pure, unmixed honey. I said: My master, for whom is this? He said: “This is for you, O Salman, and for the rest of the believers among my friends.” Then he (peace be upon him) said: “Return to the tree,” and it returned immediately. He led me to that island until he brought me to a tree at whose base was a great table with food giving off the scent of musk; and there was a bird in the form of a great eagle. Salman said: The bird leapt up, greeted him, and returned to its place. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, what is this table? He said: “It is set here for our Shia.” I said: What is this bird? He said: “An angel appointed over it until the Day of Resurrection.” I said: Alone, my master? He said: “Al-Khidr (peace be upon him) passes by it once every day.” Then he took my hand and went to another sea. We crossed it and came to a great island with a palace, its bricks alternating gold and silver, its parapets of yellow carnelian, and on each corner of the palace seventy ranks [3] of angels who greeted him; he permitted them, and they returned to their places. Salman (may God be pleased with him) said: Then the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) entered the palace; it contained trees, fruits, rivers, birds, and kinds of plants. He walked through it until he reached its end and stood by a pool in the garden, then ascended to its roof; there was a chair of red gold, and he sat upon it. We looked out over the palace, and there was a black sea churning with waves like immovable mountains. He looked at it askance, and it calmed from its boiling until it was as if it were ashamed. I said: The sea calmed from its boiling when you looked at it! He said: “It feared that I would command something concerning it. Do you know, O Salman, which sea this is?” I said: No, my master. He said: “This is the sea in which Pharaoh and his chiefs drowned [4]. The city was borne upon the wing of Gabriel (peace be upon him), then he thrust [5] it into the air, and it fell to its resting place till the Day of Resurrection.”

I said: O Commander of the Faithful, have we traveled two farsakhs? He said: “O Salman, you have traveled fifty thousand farsakhs and circled the world twenty thousand times.” I said: My master, how is this? He said: “O Salman, if Dhu al-Qarnayn circled its east and west and reached the dam of Ya’juj and Ma’juj, how would it be difficult for me while I am the Commander of the Faithful and the successor of the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds?! O Salman, have you not read His saying, Most High: ‘Knower of the unseen! so He does not reveal His secrets to any, except to him whom He chooses as a messenger’ [1] (Qur’an 72:26–27, M. H. Shakir)?” I said: Yes, O Commander of the Faithful. He said: “O Salman, I am the one made acceptable by the Messenger through whom God, Mighty and Majestic, has shown His unseen. I am the divine scholar; I am the one for whom God eased hardships and folded for me what is far.” Salman (may God be pleased with him) said: Then I heard a crier calling in the sky—I heard the voice but did not see the form—saying: You have spoken the truth, you have spoken the truth; you are the truthful, the most veracious—blessings of God be upon you. Then he sprang up, mounted his horse, and I mounted with him. He cried out to them, and the two flew in the air, and suddenly we were at the gate of Kufa. All this, and three hours of the night had passed. He said to me: “O Salman, woe, then woe to whoever does not know us with the knowledge due to us and denies our guardianship. O Salman, which is superior: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) or Solomon son of David (peace be upon him)?” I said: Rather, Muhammad is superior. He said: “O Salman, Asaf son of Barkhiyya was able to bring the throne of Bilqis to Solomon in the twinkling of an eye, and he had knowledge from the Book—so how should I not do that while I have a thousand books and twenty-four thousand books? God Most High sent down to Sheeth son of Adam fifty scrolls, to Idris (peace be upon him) thirty, to Ibrahim the Friend (peace be upon him) twenty, and (also) the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, and the Mighty Furqan.” I said: You have spoken the truth, O Commander of the Faithful; such is the Imam. He said: “Know, O Salman, the doubter in our affairs and our sciences is like one who quarrels regarding knowledge of us and our rights; and God, Mighty and Majestic, has prescribed in His Book in more than one place and explained therein what knowledge is obligatory, and it is not hidden [2].”
