The Eternal Living
Fourteen centuries, with all their hours, days, and years, have melted away like a grain of salt dissolving in the ocean, and vanished — yet the sacred name of Imam Husain (a.s.) continues to shine above the centuries and eras.
As time passes, not only does the name and memory of the Master of Martyrs never fade from hearts, but every day new dimensions of Imam Husain’s movement become revealed and manifest.
The Master of Martyrs broke through all barriers of belief, and from every nation and creed has drawn hearts toward himself.
Imam Husain (a.s.) is the forerunner of those martyrs who played the victorious melody of their crimson-colored blood in the tents of history, and presented the greatest lesson to the reformers and freedom-seekers of the world.
Gandhi, the great reformer of India, says:
“I have brought nothing new to the people of India; I have only presented to them the result of what I learned from studying the hero of Karbala.
If we wish to save India, we must follow the same path which Husain ibn Ali took.”[1]
No matter how much eloquent speakers may try to describe him, and to depict his heroism, they will still fall far short before the true greatness of his heroism.
Marbin al-Almani says on this subject:
“Imam Husain is the first politician in history whose strategy, up to today, no one has ever matched.
[1] ﻣﺠﻠّﻪ ي »اﻟﻐﺮّي« ﭼﺎپ ﻧﺠﻒ اﺷﺮف، رﺑﯿﻊ اﻻوّل 1381 ق.
If the bloody tragedy of Karbala had not occurred, certainly Islam would not have survived in its current form; it is possible that both Islam and the Muslims might have been completely erased and destroyed.” [1]
Iqbal Lahori, who was not from the Shia school, when evaluating the uprising of Imam Husain (a.s.) and its precious impact on preserving the independence of Islamic lands and cutting off the hands of foreigners, says:
“His wave of blood cut off tyranny until the Day of Judgment,
His blood created a meadow,
His blood revealed these secrets,
His blood woke up the sleeping nation.”
Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the great leader and founder of Pakistan, says:
“There is no example of courage better than what Imam Husain (a.s.) showed through his sacrifice and offering of his life, anywhere in the world.
In my opinion, all Muslims should take inspiration from this proud martyr who gave his life in the land of Iraq, and should follow him.”[2]
Indeed, the Muslim nation, if it wishes to fight against the domination of world powers, has no way other than following the Master of Martyrs — for no one will ever reach the sacred Islamic and human ideals without sacrifice and offering of life, and this must be learned from the school of Imam Husain (a.s.).
Imam Husain (a.s.) practically taught the world that an honorable death is more worthy than a life under the yoke of oppressors.
As Khushdel Tehrani expressed:
“The greatest philosophy of this king of religion
Is that red death is better than a disgraceful life.”

Husaini Sa‘di Zaman says in his Lama‘āt:
“The oppressors leave no trace in this world, but Husain ibn ʿAlī, the Absolute Truth, is alive.”
The apparent circumstances on the day of ʿĀshūrā’ suggested that after the grief-stricken sunset of the Imamate, no sign or memory of that noble figure would remain, and that the bloodthirsty enemy would rest securely on the throne of power without any obstacle.
But within a short time, the dark and murky clouds parted, and the radiant face of the Master of Martyrs became manifest to both friend and foe.
As Fouad Kermani put it:
“Your enemy killed you, but your light was never extinguished.
Indeed, that radiance which cannot perish is God’s light.
Neither did the tyrant endure, nor did his oppression remain.
The oppressor vanished, but the foundation of the oppressed was established.”
Dr. Qasim Rasa adds:
“In the battle of truth against falsehood, Husain emerged triumphant.
In the end, the dawn overcame the darkness of the night.”
Thomas Carlyle, the famous British historian and philosopher, writes:
“The martyrs of Karbala, through their actions, proved that numerical superiority has no significance where truth and falsehood confront each other.
The victory of Husain, with his tiny minority against a countless enemy, amazes me.”
The Master of Martyrs is like a boundless ocean into which the sun of all Islamic and human values rises from one side and sets from the other.
Words such as bravery, courage, sacrifice, purity, nobility, chivalry, and honor have had examples throughout history, but surely they found their truest form in the person of the Master of Martyrs, whose nature embodied them in the firmest way.
He inherited the courage and heroism of his noble father, Ḥaydar Karrār (Imām ʿAlī), and was the heir to all the virtues and perfections of the great prophets, from Adam the father of mankind to the Seal of Creation, the Prophet Muḥammad.
Every dedicated writer and insightful researcher who has taken up the pen to portray the sacrifices and courage of this model of sincerity and loyalty has created the most magnificent and beautiful images, yet in the end, presents their work with a world of apologies for its inadequacy before that grand name in history.
Some of these researchers have addressed every aspect of his life;
some have spoken of his countless virtues and infinite merits;
others have analyzed the ʿĀshūrā’ movement;
some have described his sacrifices within their abilities;
some have collected his fiery sermons and pleasant words;
some have explained the effects of mourning gatherings;
others have listed the poets who sang elegies for him;
still others have spoken of the merits of weeping and holding mourning gatherings;
and some have compiled the wondrous effects of persistently reciting the Ziyārat of ʿĀshūrā’.
Yet many unspoken words and unstrung pearls still remain about the dimensions of his being.
In this work, only a drop from the ocean, a tiny bit of the immense, and a humble sip from the endless sea of the Master of Martyrs’ miracles has been mentioned.
