31. Seeking Intercession through the Husaini Congregation

(1) During the time of the residence of the Grand Marja‘ of Shi‘ism, the late Ayatollah Haj Aqa Husain Tabatabai Borujerdi (may God sanctify his secret) — 1292–1380 AH — in Borujerd, he was afflicted with a severe eye disease. On the day of Ashura, the mourning procession of Imam Husain (a.s.) was moving through the city. The late Ayatollah Borujerdi took a bit of the clay (mud) that was smeared on the forehead of one of the mourners and rubbed it on his own eyes. At that very moment, the pain of his eyes was relieved, and for the rest of his life, he never suffered eye pain again, nor did he ever even need eyeglasses.

(2) A person named Ḥayrati, living in the Imamzadeh neighborhood of the city of Khoy, was married for ten years but had no children. Family conflicts arose, and it reached the verge of divorce.

On the day of Ashura, the congregation of Hazrat Ruqayya, as usual, came to the Jame‘ Mosque. He saw a woman lying on the mosque steps in tears, saying: “The members of the congregation must pass over me.”

Eventually, they convinced her instead to spread her scarf on the steps so the members of the procession could walk over it.

The next year, on Ashura, she handed a child to the eulogizer. He assumed the child was ill and began to pray for the child’s healing, but the mother said:

“This child is not sick; this is the result of last year’s tawassul (intercession). I have brought her now so this congregation can name her Ruqayya.”

(3) On Thursday, 11/7/1392 (solar calendar), Mr. Mohsen Shirazi, a eulogist of the Ahl al-Bayt (a.s.), narrated:

One day we were serving food in the Hussainiya (mourning gathering). When the food was finished, a man came and said:

"My mother is sick; I have come to take some of Imam Hussain’s (a.s.) food for her."

I told him: "It is finished."

He said: "That’s impossible; I must take food for my mother."

At that moment, a child came out who had received food but had not eaten it yet.

The man said to him: "Sell me this food."

The boy replied: "I won’t sell it."

He said: "I will buy this food from you for one hundred thousand tomans."

The boy replied: "I won’t sell it."

He raised the offer: two hundred thousand, three hundred thousand, five hundred thousand tomans — but the boy still refused.

Finally, he said: "I will buy this food for one million tomans."

The boy started to cry. Someone asked: "What happened?"

The boy said:

"My mother is sick and she needs an operation. The doctor said it costs one million tomans and we don’t have it. I told my mother: Tonight I will go to Imam Hussain’s (a.s.) gathering and get the money for your operation from him."

That man gave him one million tomans and took the food from him — and in this way, both of their problems were solved.

(4) He (Mr. Shirazi) narrated on the same day:

We had a seven-month-old baby. One day while feeding him, a chickpea got stuck in his throat and he was struggling to breathe.

On the day of Ashura, we took him to the tent of the Qom pilgrims in Karbala and dedicated him (vowed him) to Ali Asghar (the infant son of Imam Hussain).

At once the child sneezed, and the chickpea shot out of his throat.
