The second study

The second study:

It should be devoted to the scholarly critique of the efforts that were made during this period of Qur’anic history.

This study would distinguish the original works that truly benefited from the Qur’an from the works that tried to impose upon the Qur’an a set of intellectual orientations and adopted positions. It would therefore separate for us the efforts that submitted themselves to the Qur’an — forming opinions, understandings, and tastes subject to the Book of Allah — from the efforts that tried to subject the Book of Allah to their own tastes and adopted positions. Likewise, this study would separate the genuinely new contributions in Qur’anic studies from the repetitive and imitative work that took place in the field of tafsir during this period — which is by no means insignificant.

And this critique should be based on distinguishing between what a person may like to say as an opinion or understanding in interpreting the Book of Allah, the Exalted, and what he truly understands from the Book of Allah, even if he does not like it. The affliction of many exegetes and Qur’anic specialists is that they wish to give something to the Qur’an, rather than take from the Qur’an. If the attempt were truly sincere to take only from the Qur’an, without imposing upon it one’s personal taste, opinion, temperament, or preferences, Allah, the Exalted, would open up for him many horizons of awareness, insight, and guidance.
