English: They would spare your women, keeping them alive and taking them as maidservants. So they cried out to Moses (peace be upon him) and said: “Will they lie with [1] our daughters and our sisters?!” God commanded the girls that whenever they had any misgivings about this, they should invoke blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family, and God would turn those men away from them—either by preoccupying them, or by illness, or disability, or by one of His gracious subtleties—so no woman among them was violated. Rather, God, Mighty and Majestic, [2] warded them off from them through their invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family. Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: “And in that”—that deliverance with which your Lord delivered you—“there was a trial of favor, a great and immense blessing from your Lord.” God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “O Children of Israel, remember [3] how affliction used to be averted from your forefathers and lightened by invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family. Do you not know that if you should behold them and believe in them, [4] the blessing upon you would be greater and more excellent, and God’s bounty upon you [5] would be more abundant and more plentiful?”

English (Qur’an 2:50–53, M. H. Shakir):

And when We parted the sea for you, so We saved you and drowned the followers of Firon and you watched by. [2:50]

And when We appointed a time of forty nights with Musa, then you took the calf (for a god) after him and you were unjust. [2:51]

Then We pardoned you after that so that you might give thanks. [2:52]

And when We gave Musa the Book and the distinction that you might walk aright. [2:53]

99-/473 _1-: Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “God, Mighty and Majestic, said: And remember when We parted the sea for you [6] into divisions, separated part from part, so We delivered you there and drowned the house [7] of Pharaoh and his people while you were looking at them as they were drowning. That was because when Moses (peace be upon him) reached the sea, God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: Say to the Children of Israel: Renew your affirmation of My oneness,

And acknowledge [1] in your hearts the remembrance of Muhammad, the lord of My male and female servants, and renew upon yourselves allegiance to ‘Ali, the brother of Muhammad, and to their pure family; and say: O God, by their rank, carry us across the surface of this water; for the water will turn into land for you. Moses (peace be upon him) conveyed this to them, but they said: “Do you bring upon us what we dislike? Did we flee from Pharaoh’s people except out of fear of death?! And you would plunge us into this deep water with these words—what do we know of what might befall us on account of them?!” Then Kalib son of Yuhanna said to Moses (peace be upon him)—he was mounted, and that inlet was four parasangs wide: “O Prophet of God, has God commanded you that we should say this and enter the water?” He said: “Yes.” He asked: “And do you command me to do it?” He said: “Yes.” So he halted and renewed upon himself what he had been commanded of affirming God’s oneness, the prophethood of Muhammad (God bless him and his family), and the allegiance to ‘Ali (peace be upon him) and the pure ones from their family. Then he said: “O God, by their rank, carry me across the surface of this water.” Then he drove his horse into it, and it galloped upon the surface of the water, and the water beneath him was like soft earth until he reached the end of the inlet; then he galloped back. Then he said to the Children of Israel: “O Children of Israel, obey God and obey Moses; for this supplication is nothing but the key [2] to the gates of the gardens, the lock to the gates of the fires, the means of sending down [3] provisions, and what brings upon God’s male and female servants the pleasure [4] of the All-dominant Creator.” But they refused and said: “We will travel only upon land.” Then God Most High revealed to Moses: Strike the sea with your staff [5] and say: “O God, by the rank of Muhammad and his pure family, split it.” He did so, and it split, and the ground appeared to the end of the inlet. Moses (peace be upon him) said: “Enter it.” They said: “The ground is muddy; we fear we will sink [6] in it.” God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “O Moses, say: O God, by the right of Muhammad and his pure family, dry it.” He said it, and God sent the east wind [7] upon it, and it dried. Moses (peace be upon him) said: “Enter it.” They said: “O Prophet of God, we are twelve tribes, sons of twelve fathers. If we enter, each group will want to go before his fellow, and we cannot be sure discord will not fall among us. If each group had a separate path, we would be safe from what we fear.” So God commanded Moses to strike the sea according to their number—twelve strikes in twelve places adjacent to that place—and to say: “O God, by the rank of Muhammad and his pure family, make the land clear for us and remove [8] the water from us.” Then it became a full twelve paths, and the ground was made firm by the east wind.

The settling of the ground was by the east wind. He said: “Enter it.” They said: “Each group of us will enter one of these lanes, and we will not know what is happening to the others.” God, Mighty and Majestic, said: “Strike every massif [1] of water between these lanes.” He struck and said: “O God, by the rank of Muhammad and his pure family, make in this water wide arches [2] so that they can see one another through them.” Wide arches formed, and they could see one another through them; then they entered. When they reached the end, Pharaoh and his people came and entered. When the last of them had entered and the first were about to emerge, God Most High commanded the sea, and it closed in upon them; they drowned while the companions of Moses were looking at them. That is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: And We drowned the people of Pharaoh while you were looking at them. God, Mighty and Majestic, said to the Children of Israel in the time of Muhammad (God bless him and his family): “If God Most High did all of this for your forefathers out of honor for Muhammad, and by Moses’ supplication—a supplication by which he sought nearness for them [to God]—do you then not understand that it is incumbent upon you to believe in Muhammad and his family now that [3] you have beheld him?” Then God, Mighty and Majestic, said: And when We appointed for Moses forty nights, then you took the calf after him while you were wrongdoers. The Imam (peace be upon him) said: “Moses son of ‘Imran (peace be upon him) used to say to the Children of Israel: When God relieves you and destroys your enemies, I will bring you a Book from your Lord, comprising His commands and prohibitions, His exhortations, lessons, and parables. When God relieved them, God, Mighty and Majestic, commanded him to come to the appointed time and to fast thirty days at the foot of the mountain. Moses thought that after that He would give him the Book. Moses fasted thirty days [4]; when it was the last of the days, he used the tooth-stick before breaking the fast. God, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to him: ‘O Moses, did you not know that the odor [5] of a fasting person’s mouth is sweeter to Me than the scent of musk? Fast another ten and do not use the tooth-stick at breaking the fast.’ Moses (peace be upon him) did so, and God’s promise was to give him the Book after forty nights; so He gave it to him. Then the Samaritan came and confused the weak among the Children of Israel and said: ‘Moses promised to return to you after forty nights, and here are twenty nights and twenty days—forty complete. Moses erred with respect to his Lord, and your Lord has come to you. He wanted to show you that He is able to call you to Himself directly, and that He did not send Moses out of any need for him.’ Then he produced the calf he had made. They said to him: ‘How can the calf be our god?’ He said to them: ‘It is only that through this calf your Lord speaks to you, [6] just as He spoke to Moses from the tree; so the god is in the calf as He was in the tree.’ Thus they went astray by that and led others astray.”

Moses (peace be upon him) said: “O calf, was our Lord in you as these claim?” The calf spoke and said: “Exalted is our Lord above being contained by a calf, or encompassed by anything of trees or places, or that anything should contain Him. No—by God, O Moses—but the Samaritan set up a calf with its rear to a wall, and he dug on the other side into the ground and seated one of his demons there; he put his mouth to its hind part and spoke when he said: This is your god and the god of Moses [1]. O Moses son of ‘Imran, these were abandoned to worship me and take me as a god only because they took lightly invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his pure family, and they denied loyalty to them, and the prophethood of the Prophet and the designation of the Successor, until they came to the point of taking me as a god.” God Most High said: “If God Most High only abandoned the calf-worshipers because they took lightly invoking blessings upon Muhammad and his successor ‘Ali, then what do you not fear of the greater abandonment in your hostility to Muhammad and ‘Ali, when you have witnessed both and recognized their signs and proofs?” Then God, Mighty and Majestic, said: Then We pardoned you after that so that you might give thanks—meaning, We pardoned your forebears for their worship of the calf so that you—O you who exist in the time of Muhammad from the Children of Israel—might give thanks for that blessing upon your ancestors and upon you after them.” Then he (peace be upon him) said: “God, Mighty and Majestic, only pardoned them because they called upon God by Muhammad and his pure family and renewed upon themselves the allegiance to Muhammad and ‘Ali and their pure progeny. Thereupon God had mercy on them and pardoned them.” Then He, Mighty and Majestic, said: And when We gave Moses the Book and the Furqan, that you might be guided. He said: “And remember when We gave Moses the Book—which is the Torah—for which the Children of Israel were bound to believe in it and submit to what it required; and the Furqan We also gave him, by which a distinction was made between truth and falsehood and between those in the right and those in the wrong. When God Most High honored them with the Book, with belief in it and submission to it, God thereafter revealed to Moses (peace be upon him): ‘This Book they have acknowledged; the Furqan remains—the distinction between the believers and the unbelievers, and the right-acting and the wrongdoers. Renew the covenant with them upon it, for I have sworn upon Myself a true oath that I will not accept anyone’s faith or deed except with belief in it.’ Moses (peace be upon him) said: ‘What is it, my Lord?’ God, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘O Moses, you shall take from the Children of Israel [their acknowledgment] that Muhammad is the best of the prophets [2] and the master of the messengers, and that his brother and legatee, ‘Ali, is the best of the legatees; that his friends whom he appoints are the leaders of creation; and that his Shi‘a—those compliant with him, submitting to him and to his commands and prohibitions and to his successors—are the stars of the Highest Paradise and the kings of the Gardens of ‘Adn.’” He said: “Moses (peace be upon him) took this from them. Some held it as truth in conviction, and some gave it with their tongues without their hearts. The one among them who truly believed had a manifest light shining upon his brow, while the one who professed it with his tongue but not his heart had no such light. That is the Furqan which God, Mighty and Majestic, gave Moses (peace be upon him)—the distinction between those in the right and those in the wrong. Then God, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘So that you might be guided,’ that is, so that you might know that what ennobles a servant in the sight of God, Mighty and Majestic, is allegiance, just as your forefathers were ennobled by it.”

99-/474 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi, from Muhammad b. Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And when We appointed for Moses forty nights. He said: “In knowledge and decree it was thirty nights; then it appeared to God, so He added ten; thus the appointed time with his Lord in the beginning [1] and in the end was forty nights.”

English (Qur’an 2:54, M. H. Shakir):

And when Musa said to his people: O my people! you have surely been unjust to yourselves by taking the calf (for a god), therefore turn to your Creator (penitently), so kill your people, that is best for you with your Creator: so He turned to you (mercifully), for surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful. [2:54]

99-/475 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: “God, Mighty and Majestic, said: And remember, O Children of Israel, when Moses said to his people who worshiped the calf: O my people, you have wronged yourselves—you have harmed them—by taking the calf as a god. So turn penitently to your Creator, Who created you and formed you; so kill yourselves by some of you killing others: let whoever did not worship the calf kill whoever did. That is better for you—that is, that killing is better for you with your Creator than that you should live in this world while He has not forgiven you; your life in this world would be completed and your end would be to the Fire. But if you are killed while repentant, God, Mighty and Majestic, will make that killing an expiation for you and will make the Garden your abode [2] and your place of return. God, Mighty and Majestic, said: So He turned to you before your turning—before the killing was completed upon your group and before it came upon all of you—and He granted you respite to repent and preserved you for obedience; surely He is the Oft-returning, the Merciful.” He said: “That was because when God Most High invalidated the matter of the calf at the hands of Moses (peace be upon him), making it speak to reveal the Samaritan’s trickery, and Moses (peace be upon him) commanded that those who did not worship it should kill those who did, most of them disavowed it and said: ‘We did not worship it.’ God, Mighty and Majestic, said to Moses (peace be upon him): File down this golden calf with iron into filings, then scatter it in the sea. Whoever drinks its water, his lips and nose will turn black and his guilt will appear. He did so, and the calf-worshipers were exposed. God Most High commanded twelve thousand to go out against the rest with swords drawn to kill them. A herald proclaimed: ‘Behold, may God curse anyone who spares them with hand or foot; and may God curse anyone who examines the victim in hopes of recognizing a dear one or relative [3] and so bypasses him for a stranger.’ So they submitted...”
