Al-Isra Ayah 12

Al-Isra, verse 12

99-/6275 _4- The Shaykh in (al-Amāli), with his chain from Hisham ibn Salim, from Abu Abdillah (peace be upon him), said: When Allah created Adam and breathed into him of His spirit, he leapt to stand up before the spirit was complete in him, and he fell. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “and man is ever hasty.” (Quran 17:11, M. H. Shakir)

He says, exalted:

And We have made the night and the day two signs, then We have made the sign of the night to pass away, and We have made the sign of the day to see, that you may seek grace from your Lord, and that you may know the number of years and the reckoning; and We have explained everything with distinctness. (Quran 17:12, M. H. Shakir)

99-/6276 _1- Ibn Babawayh said: al-Husayn [1] ibn Yahya ibn Durays al-Bajali narrated to us, he said: my father narrated to us, he said: Abu Ja‘far [Muhammad ibn] [2] ‘Umara al-Sukkari al-Suryani narrated to us, he said: Ibrahim ibn ‘Asim at Qazwin narrated to us, he said: ‘Abdullah ibn Harun al-Karkhi narrated to us, he said: Abu Ja‘far Ahmad ibn ‘Abdillah ibn Yazid ibn Salam ibn ‘Ubaydillah, the client of the Messenger of Allah, narrated to us, he said: My father ‘Abdullah ibn Yazid narrated to me, he said: Yazid ibn Salam [3] narrated to me that he asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), and said to him: Why was the Furqan named “Furqan”? He said: Because its verses and surahs are separated; it was sent down not upon tablets [while other scriptures like the Suhuf, the Torah, the Gospel, and the Zabur were all sent down at once upon tablets] and parchment. He said: What is it with the sun and the moon that they are not equal in light and radiance? He said: When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, created them, they obeyed and did not disobey in anything. So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Jibreel (peace be upon him) to efface [the light of] the moon, and he effaced it; the effacement left black streaks in the moon. Had the moon been left as it was, like the sun, without being effaced, the night would not be distinguished from the day, nor the day from the night; the faster would not know how long to fast; and people would not know the number of years and the reckoning. And that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And We have made the night and the day two signs, then We have made the sign of the night to pass away, and We have made the sign of the day to see, that you may seek grace from your Lord, and that you may know the number of years and the reckoning.” (Quran 17:12, M. H. Shakir) He said: You have spoken the truth, O Muhammad. Then tell me, why was the night called “layl”? He said: Because it causes men and women to come together, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made it intimacy and a covering; and that is the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And We made the night to be a covering, And We made the day for seeking livelihood.” (Quran 78:10-11, M. H. Shakir) He said: You have spoken the truth.

99-/6277 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: Regarding His saying, exalted: “So We effaced the sign of the night,” he said: The effacement is in the moon. (Quran 17:12)

99-/6278 _3- And from him: He said: My father narrated to me, from al-Hasan ibn Mahbub, from ‘Abdullah ibn Sinan, from Ma‘ruf ibn Kharrabudh, from al-Hakam ibn al-Mustanir, from ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them), who said: Among the times Allah has measured out for the people, of what they need, is the “sea” which Allah created between the heaven and the earth. For Allah determined in it the courses of the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets; then He determined all of that upon the celestial sphere; then He assigned to the sphere an angel, with him seventy thousand angels, who rotate the sphere. When the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets revolve with it, they come to their stations which Allah has determined for them for their day and their night. And when the sins of the servants become many, and Allah intends to call them to account with a sign from His signs, He commands the angel in charge of the sphere to shift the sphere upon which are the courses of the sun, the moon, the stars, and the planets. The angel then commands those seventy thousand angels to shift the sphere from its courses—he said—and they shift it; the sun then enters that “sea” in which the sphere runs, and its heat is blotted out and its color changes. If Allah wills to magnify the sign, the sun is blotted out in the sea according to how Allah loves to make His creation fear by the sign; that is when the solar eclipse is severe—and likewise is done with the moon. When Allah intends to bring them out and return them to their course, He commands the angel in charge of the sphere to return the sun to its course; the angel returns the sphere to its course, and it emerges from the water turbid, and the moon likewise. Then ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them) said: None are alarmed by them or fear them except those who are of our Shia; so when that occurs, hasten to Allah and turn back. He said: And the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: The earth is a journey of five hundred years; its desolate part is a journey of four hundred years, and its inhabited part a journey of one hundred years. The sun is sixty parasangs by sixty parasangs, and the moon forty by forty; their inner sides give light to the inhabitants of the heaven, and their outer sides give light to the inhabitants of the earth; and the stars are like the greatest mountain on earth; and the creation of the sun was before the moon.

99-/6279 _4- Salam ibn al-Mustanir said: I said to Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him): Why is the sun hotter than the moon? He said: Allah created the sun from the light of fire and the pure part of water—one layer of this and one layer of that—until, when it became seven layers, He clothed it in a garment of fire; from there the sun became hotter than the moon. I said: And the moon? He said: Allah created the moon from the radiance of fire and the pure part of water—one layer of this and one layer of that—until, when it became seven layers, Allah clothed it in a garment of water; from there the moon became cooler than the sun.

99-/6280 _5- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding: “So We effaced the sign of the night,” he said: It is the blackness that is within the moon. (Quran 17:12)

99-/6281 _6- From Nasr ibn Qabus, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The blackness that is in the moon is Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family).

99-/6282 _7- From Abu al-Tufayl, who said: I was in the mosque of Kufa and I heard ‘Ali (peace be upon him) while he was on the pulpit. Ibn al-Kawwa’ called to him from the back of the mosque and said: O Commander of the Faithful, inform me about this blackness in the moon. He said: It is the saying of Allah: “So We effaced the sign of the night.” (Quran 17:12, M. H. Shakir)

99-/6283 _8- From Abu al-Tufayl, who said: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (peace be upon him) said: Ask me about the Book of Allah; for there is no verse but that I know whether it was sent down by night or by day, in a plain or on a mountain. Ibn al-Kawwa’ said to him: Then what is this blackness in the moon? He said: A blind man asked about a blind thing! Have you not heard Allah say: “And We have made the night and the day two signs, then We have made the sign of the night to pass away, and We have made the sign of the day to see—so that is its effacement.” (Quran 17:12, M. H. Shakir) He said: Allah says: “Have you not considered those who have changed Allah’s favor for ungratefulness and caused their people to alight into the abode of perdition? (Into) hell; they shall enter into it.” (Quran 14:28-29, M. H. Shakir) He (peace be upon him) said: That is about the two most immoral ones of Quraysh.

99-/6285 _2- Al-‘Ayyashi: From Zurara, Humran, and Muhammad ibn Muslim, from Abu Ja‘far and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon them) regarding His saying: “And We have made every man’s actions to cling to his neck,” he said: His measured lot which has been decreed for him. (Quran 17:13)
