He said regarding the words of the Exalted, “But there is to be no aggression except against the unjust” (Qur’an 2:193; M. H. Shakir: “But if they desist, then surely Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. And fight with them until there is no persecution, and religion should be only for Allah; but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.”): “The children of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him).”

99-/927 _3- Al-‘Ayyāshī, from al-Hasan Bayyā‘ al-Harawī, with an elevated chain, from one of the Two (peace be upon them), regarding His saying, “But there is to be no aggression except against the unjust” (Qur’an 2:193; M. H. Shakir: “...but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.”): “Except against the progeny of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him).”

99-/928 _4- From Ibrāhīm, who said: Someone who narrated it from one of the Two (peace be upon them) informed me. He said: I asked about “But there is to be no aggression except against the unjust” (Qur’an 2:193; M. H. Shakir: “...there should be no hostility except against the oppressors.”). He said: “Allah, Glorified is He, does not act aggressively against anyone except against the descendants of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him).”

99-/929 _5- Ibn Bābawayh Muhammad b. ‘Alī said: Ahmad b. Ziyād b. Ja‘far al-Hamadhānī (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to us, saying: ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm narrated to us, from his father, from ‘Abd al-Salām b. Sālih al-Harawī, who said: I said to Abū al-Hasan ‘Alī b. Mūsā al-Riḍā (peace be upon him): O son of the Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a hadith narrated from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) that he said: “When the Qā’im (peace be upon him) rises, he will kill the offspring of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) for the deeds of their fathers?” He (peace be upon him) said: “It is so.” I said: Then what is the meaning of the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another” (Qur’an 6:164; 17:15; 35:18; 39:7; M. H. Shakir: “And no bearer of burden shall bear the burden of another.”)? He said: “Allah has spoken the truth in all His words. However, the offspring of the killers of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) are pleased with the actions of their fathers and boast of them; and whoever is pleased with a thing is like the one who committed it. If a man were killed in the East and a man in the West were pleased with his killing, then in the sight of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, the one who is pleased would be a partner to the killer. The Qā’im (peace be upon him) will only kill them when he rises because of their being pleased with their fathers’ action.” He said: I then asked him: With what will the Qā’im (peace be upon him) begin among them when he rises (peace be upon him)? He said: “He will begin with Banū Shaybah and cut off their hands, because they are the thieves of the House of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”

The sacred month for the sacred month, and all sacred things are (subject to) retaliation; so whoever has attacked you, then attack him in like manner as he attacked you; and be careful of (your duty to) Allah and know that Allah is with those who guard (against evil). (Qur’an 2:194, M. H. Shakir)

99-/930 _1- Shaykh in al-Tahdhīb, with his chain, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Īsā, from Muhammad b. Sinān, from al-‘Alā’ b. al-Fuḍayl, who said: I asked him about the polytheists: Do the Muslims initiate fighting them in the sacred month? He said: “If the polytheists initiate by deeming it lawful, and the Muslims see that they can prevail over them in it, then that is the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘The sacred month for the sacred month, and all sacred things are (subject to) retaliation’ (Qur’an 2:194; M. H. Shakir). The Romans in this regard are like the polytheists, because they do not acknowledge any sanctity or right for the sacred month; they initiate fighting in it. The polytheists used to acknowledge for it a right and sanctity, but they violated it, so it was violated against them. And the people of rebellion initiate fighting.”

99-/931 _2- Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb: from ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, from his father, and Muhammad b. Ismā‘īl, from al-Faḍl b. Shādhān, all from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Mu‘āwiyah b. ‘Ammār, who said: I asked Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him) about a man who killed a man in the ḥill (outside the sanctuary), then entered the ḥaram. He said: “He is not to be killed, fed, given drink, traded with, or given shelter until he exits the ḥaram, then the prescribed penalty is carried out upon him.” I said: What do you say about a man who killed in the ḥaram or stole? He said: “The prescribed penalty is carried out upon him in the ḥaram, because he did not regard the ḥaram as sacred. And Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has said: ‘So whoever has attacked you, then attack him in like manner as he attacked you’ (Qur’an 2:194; M. H. Shakir). This applies in the ḥaram. And [He said:] ‘There should be no hostility except against the oppressors’ (Qur’an 2:193; M. H. Shakir: ‘...there should be no hostility except against the oppressors’).”

99-/932 _3- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from al-‘Alā’ b. al-Fuḍayl, who said: I asked him about the polytheists: Do the Muslims initiate fighting them in the sacred month? He said: “If the polytheists have initiated by deeming it lawful, and the Muslims see that they can prevail over them in it, then that is His saying, Exalted: ‘The sacred month for the sacred month, and all sacred things are (subject to) retaliation’ (Qur’an 2:194; M. H. Shakir).”

99-/933 _4- Abū ‘Alī al-Ṭabrisī: “And all sacred things are (subject to) retaliation” refers to countering them by entering the House in the sacred month. Mujāhid said: Because Quraysh boasted that they had turned back the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) at Ḥudaybiyyah, when he was in iḥrām in Dhū al-Qa‘dah, preventing him from the Sacred Town; so Allah, Exalted, admitted him into Mecca the following year in Dhū al-Qa‘dah and fulfilled his ‘umrah for him, and requited them for what they had barred between him and it. This is the meaning reported from Qatādah, al-Ḍaḥḥāk, al-Rabī‘, and ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. Yazīd, and similarly narrated from Ibn ‘Abbās and Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him).

Ya‘qūb, from Ḥammād the fishmonger, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “If a man were to spend what is in his hands in one of the ways of Allah, he would not have done well nor been granted success. Does not Allah, Exalted, say: ‘And spend in the way of Allah and do not cast yourselves to perdition with your own hands, and do good; surely Allah loves the doers of good’ (Qur’an 2:195; M. H. Shakir)? It means: the moderate ones.”

99-/935 _2- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from Ḥammād the fishmonger, from Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “If a man were to spend what is in his hands in one of the ways of Allah, he would not have done well nor been granted success. Indeed Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘And do not cast yourselves to perdition with your own hands’ (Qur’an 2:195; M. H. Shakir).”

And accomplish the pilgrimage and the visit for Allah; but if you are confined, (send) whatever offering is easy to obtain, and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches its destination; but whoever among you is sick (Qur’an 2:196, M. H. Shakir; partial verse as cited).
