It is from Allah; indeed, Gabriel has sent down this Qur’an from Allah upon your heart by Allah’s permission, by His command, confirming what is before it of all of Allah’s books, and as guidance from misguidance and good tidings for the believers in the prophethood of Muhammad and the guardianship of ‘Ali, and after him the Imams—that they are truly the friends of Allah—if they die upon their allegiance to Muhammad and ‘Ali and their pure progeny. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: O Salman, Allah has affirmed what you have said and has validated your opinion. Then he mentioned a long narration taken from the Tafsir of our master Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him).
And certainly We have revealed to you clear communications and none disbelieve in them except the transgressors. (Qur’an 2:99, M. H. Shakir)
99-/566 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: Allah, the Exalted, said: And indeed We have sent down to you, O Muhammad, signs indicating the truth of your prophethood, clear about the Imamate of ‘Ali, your brother, your legatee, and your chosen one—clarifying the disbelief of whoever doubts you or your brother, or who meets the command of each of you with other than acceptance and submission. Then He said: And none disbelieve in them—in these signs that indicate your superiority and the superiority of ‘Ali after you over all creation—except those who are defiantly disobedient to Allah’s religion and His obedience, from the lying Jews and the Nawasib who feign [1] being Muslims.
And whenever they make a covenant, some party of them cast it aside; nay, the truth is most of them do not believe. (Qur’an 2:100, M. H. Shakir)
99-/567 _2- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said: Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said—rebuking those Jews whose obstinacy has already been mentioned, and those Nussab who broke what had been taken as a covenant from them—so He said: And whenever they made a covenant—pledging and contracting—to be obedient to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), and to follow ‘Ali (peace be upon him) after him, and to submit to his command, a group of them cast aside that covenant and opposed it. Allah said: Nay, most of them—most of those Jews and the Nawasib—do not believe, that is, in the remainder of their lives they do not take heed [2], nor do they repent despite witnessing the signs and observing the proofs.
And when there came to them a messenger from Allah verifying that which they have, a party of those who were given the Book threw the Book of Allah behind their backs as if they knew nothing. (Qur’an 2:101, M. H. Shakir)
99-/568 _1- Imam al-‘Askari (peace be upon him) said: Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: And when there came to them—to those Jews and those among the Nawasib who followed them—a messenger from Allah verifying what they had, the Qur’an containing the description of the merit of Muhammad and ‘Ali, and the obligation of their guardianship and the guardianship of their friends, and enmity toward their enemies, a party of those who were given the Book cast behind their backs the book of the Jews—the Torah—and the books of Allah’s prophets (peace be upon them); they abandoned acting upon what was in them, envied Muhammad for his prophethood and ‘Ali for his legateship, and they rejected [1] what they had come to know of their virtues, as though they did not know. They acted like those who deny that, and rejecting it is the act of one who does not know—even though they knew it was the truth.
And they followed what the Shaitans chanted of sorcery in the reign of Sulaiman, and Sulaiman did not disbelieve, but the Shaitans disbelieved, they taught men sorcery and that was sent down to the two angels at Babel, Harut and Marut; yet these two taught no man until they had said, Surely we are only a trial, therefore do not be a disbeliever. They learned from them the means by which they might cause separation between a man and his wife; and they cannot hurt with it any one except with Allah’s permission, and they learned what harmed them and did not profit them, and certainly they do know that he who bought it should have no share of good in the hereafter, and evil was the price for which they sold their souls; had they but known. (Qur’an 2:102, M. H. Shakir)
And if they had believed and guarded themselves (against evil), reward from Allah would certainly have been better; had they but known. (Qur’an 2:103, M. H. Shakir)
