The Imam's (a.s.) Request for Support from His Enemies in Order to Complete the Proof
The Imam's (a.s.) Request for Support from His Enemies in Order to Complete the Proof
The sixth instance was that the Imam (a.s.) sought support even from his own enemies in order to complete the proof (ḥujjah) against them.
First, he sought support from Hurr and his army when they prevented him from returning.
Secondly, he sought support from Ibn Saʿd on the sixth night.
As for the first:
When Hurr and his companions arrived before the Imam (a.s.), and after the Imam had provided water to them, they continued travelling alongside him until the time of the noon prayer arrived.
The Imam (a.s.) ordered Hajjaj ibn Masruq to call the adhān.
Then the Imam (a.s.) came out wearing his izār and ridāʾ, praised and glorified Allah, and said:
“O people! I did not come to you until your letters and messengers came to me,
saying:
‘Come to us, for we have no Imam. Perhaps Allah will unite our affairs through you upon guidance and truth.’
Now, if you remain upon that same view, then renew your pledge and covenant so that I may feel assured.
But if you have changed your opinion and dislike my coming, then I shall return to the place from which I came.”
All of them remained silent and said nothing.
Then the Imam (a.s.) said to the muʾadhdhin:
“Recite the iqāmah.”
After that he said to Hurr:
“If you wish, lead your companions in prayer.”
Hurr replied:
“Rather, I shall pray behind you.”
The Imam (a.s.) then led the prayer and afterwards returned to his tent.
Hurr and his companions returned to their own camp.
Hurr remained in his tent with five hundred of his men, while the rest stayed beneath the sun, each seeking shade beneath his horse.
When the time of the afternoon prayer arrived, the Imam (a.s.) ordered his companions to prepare for departure and instructed the muʾadhdhin to call the adhān for ʿAsr.
After leading the prayer, he turned toward the people, praised and glorified Allah, and said:
“O people! If you fear Allah and place the truth where it belongs, that would be closer to the pleasure of Allah.
We, the Ahl al-Bayt of Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), have more right to the authority and leadership than these people who claim it for themselves despite not being worthy of it, and who deal with you through oppression and transgression.
If, however, you refuse our authority, persist in your ignorance, and your present opinion differs from what your letters expressed, then I shall return to my homeland.”
Hurr replied:
“By Allah, I do not know anything about the letters of which you speak.”
The Imam (a.s.) then ordered one of his companions:
“Bring out those two saddlebags.”
The two saddlebags, filled with the letters of the people of Kufah, were brought and emptied before him.
Hurr said:
“We are not among those who wrote these letters.
We have merely been ordered that when we meet you, we are not to leave you until we bring you before Ibn Ziyad in Kufah.”
The Imam (a.s.) replied:
“Death is nearer to you than the fulfillment of that hope.” [939]
As for the Imam's (a.s.) request for support from Ibn Saʿd:
Its details are that the Imam (a.s.) sent a messenger to him saying:
“I wish to speak with you. Meet me between
the two armies.”
The accursed Ibn Saʿd came out with twenty men, and the Imam (a.s.) also came with twenty men.
When they met, the Imam (a.s.) ordered his companions to withdraw, leaving only his brother Abbas (a.s.) and his son Ali al-Akbar (a.s.) with him.
Likewise, Ibn Saʿd dismissed his companions, leaving only his son Hafs and his servant.
The Imam (a.s.) then said:
“Woe unto you, O son of Saʿd! Do you not fear Allah, to whom you shall return?
You are fighting against me while knowing who I am.
Leave these people and come with me, for that will be better for you before Allah.”
The accursed man replied:
“I fear that my house in Kufah will be destroyed.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“I shall rebuild it for you.”
He replied:
“I fear that my land and property will be confiscated.”
The Imam (a.s.) said:
“I shall compensate you for it from my own wealth in the Hijaz.”
He replied:
“I fear for my family.”
The Imam (a.s.) remained silent and gave him no answer.
Then he turned away from him and said:
“May Allah deal with you! May He soon cause you to be slaughtered upon your bed, and may He not forgive you on the Day of Gathering.
By Allah, I hope that you shall not eat much of the wheat of Iraq.”
Ibn Saʿd mockingly replied:
“Barley will suffice me in place of wheat.”
“May the curse of Allah be upon him.” [940]
