S 2 A 8
Then a caller will call out: Where are the remaining ones from the lovers of Ali son of Abi Talib? Then there will rise a people who have wronged themselves and transgressed against it. And it will be said: Where are the haters of Ali son of Abi Talib? Then a vast multitude and a great number of them will be brought. It will be said: Shall we not make every one thousand of these a ransom for one of the lovers of Ali son of Abi Talib (peace be upon him) so that they may enter Paradise? So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will save your lovers and make their enemies their ransom.
Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: This is the most noble virtue; whoever loves him, loves Allah and His Messenger; and whoever hates him, hates Allah and His Messenger. They are the choicest of Allah’s creation from the nation of Muhammad.
Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said to Ali (peace be upon him): Look. He looked at ‘Abdullah ibn Ubayy and at seven of the Jews, then he said: You have witnessed it—Allah has set a seal upon their hearts, their hearings, and their sights.
The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: You, O Ali, are the foremost of Allah’s witnesses on earth after Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah.
He said: That is His saying: “Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their eyes is a covering”—a covering which the angels see and thus recognize them by it; and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sees it, and the best of Allah’s creation after him, Ali son of Abi Talib (peace be upon him), sees it as well. (Qur’an 2:7, M. H. Shakir: Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing and there is a covering over their eyes, and there is a great punishment for them.)
Then he said: And there is a great punishment for them in the Hereafter for their disbelief in Allah and their disbelief in Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). (Qur’an 2:7, M. H. Shakir: …and there is a great punishment for them.)
His saying, Exalted is He: And there are some people who say: We believe in Allah and the last day; and they are not at all believers. (Qur’an 2:8, M. H. Shakir)
99-/328 _1- The Imam said: “The Scholar, Musa son of Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) stationed the Commander of the Faithful, Ali son of Abi Talib (peace be upon him), on the Day of Ghadir at his well-known and famous standing place, he then said: O servants of Allah, ascribe me [to my lineage]. They said: You are Muhammad son of ‘Abdullah son of ‘Abd al-Muttalib son of Hashim son of ‘Abd Manaf. Then he said: O people, am I not more entitled over you than your own selves? So I am your master, more entitled over you than your own selves? They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) looked to the sky and said: O Allah, bear witness—he said that (may Allah bless him and his family), and they said that—three times.
Then he said: Behold! For whomever I am his master and the one most entitled over him, then this one is his master and the one most entitled over him. O Allah, befriend whoever befriends him, and be the enemy of whoever is his enemy; support whoever supports him and forsake whoever forsakes him.
Then he said: Rise, O Abu Bakr, and pledge allegiance to him for the leadership of the believers. He rose and did so. Then he said: Rise, O ‘Umar, and pledge allegiance to him for the leadership of the believers. He rose and pledged. Then after that he said [likewise] to complete the nine, and then to the chiefs of the Muhajirun and the Ansar, so they all pledged allegiance.
Then ‘Umar son of al-Khattab stood up from among their group and said: Bravo, bravo, O son of Abi Talib! You have become my master and the master of every believing man and believing woman. Then they dispersed from that while the pledges and covenants had been firmly confirmed upon them.
Then a group from among their rebellious tyrants colluded among themselves that, if something were to happen to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family), they would certainly divert this matter away from Ali (peace be upon him) and not leave it to him. Allah Most High knew that in their hearts. They would come to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and say to him: You have appointed Ali—the most beloved of Allah’s creation to Allah, to you, and to us; you have sufficed us by him against the burdens of the wrongdoers and the unjust in our governance. But Allah knew in their hearts the opposite of that, and their mutual collusion—that they were set upon enmity and intent on diverting the matter from its rightful one.
So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, informed Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family) about them, and said: O Muhammad, “And among mankind are those who say: We believe in Allah”—the One who commanded you to install Ali (peace be upon him) as an Imam, a governor for your community, and a director of affairs—“and [in] the Last Day; yet they are not believers” in that. Rather, they collude upon your destruction and his destruction, and they resolve within themselves to rebel against Ali (peace be upon him) if something should happen to you. (Qur’an 2:8, M. H. Shakir)

And they would say to the disbelievers: “Surely we are with you; we were only mocking,” so Allah replied to them: “Allah shall pay them back their mockery and He leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on.”
99-/331 _1- Imam Musa son of Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “So that collusion of theirs, and their talk concerning Ali (peace be upon him), and their ill plotting against him reached the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). He summoned them and reproached them, and they strove in swearing oaths. The first of them said: O Messenger of Allah, by Allah, I have never counted anything as significant as I count this pledge; I have hoped that Allah would, by it, expand for me [my place] in the palaces of the gardens and make me among the most excellent of residents and dwellers therein. The second of them said: May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! I have trusted in entering Paradise and salvation from the Fire only by this pledge. By Allah, were I to break it or violate it, it would not please me—[even] if, in exchange for what I have given of myself, I were granted possession of all that lies between the dust to the Throne in fresh pearls and precious gems. The third of them said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I have become, from the joy at this pledge—from happiness and the breadth of hopes in Allah’s good pleasure—so assured that if the sins of all the people of the earth were upon me, they would be purged from me by this pledge; and he swore to what he said of that.”
