Qur’an 21:78–79 — And Dawood and Sulaiman when they gave judgment concerning the field when the people's sheep pastured therein by night, and We were bearers of witness to their judgment. So We made Sulaiman to understand it; and to each one We gave wisdom and knowledge. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/7173 — al-Kāfī 5:2/301: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub, from a number of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from some of our companions, from al-Mu‘alla Abu ‘Uthman, from Abu Basir, said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “And Dawood and Sulaiman when they gave judgment concerning the field when the people's sheep pastured therein.” He said: “Nafsh occurs only at night. It is upon the owner of the field to guard it by day, and it is not upon the owner of the livestock to guard them by day; rather, their grazing and sustenance are by day, so whatever they damage (by day) there is no liability upon them. It is upon the owner of the livestock to guard the livestock at night from people’s fields; so whatever they damage at night, they are liable for—it is that which is called nafsh. And indeed Dawood (peace be upon him) judged in favor of the one whose crop was affected.”
