The Bestowal of the Prophet’s Heart Upon Imam Husain (a.s.)
The Bestowal of the Prophet’s Heart Upon Imam Husain (a.s.)
Note
Concerning that which Allah bestowed upon Imam Husain (a.s.) from the created perfections of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.), there are several matters:
First: A brief enumeration of those gifts.
Second: Their detailed explanation.
Third: That which is even greater than those gifts.
As for the first matter, we say that Allah bestowed upon him the heart of the Prophet, his spirit, his inner heart (fuʾād), his intellect, his sight, his sense of smell, his eyes, the space between his eyes, his strength, his shoulders, his back, his lap, his tongue, his hands, his fingers, his chest, his lips, his speech, and his son.
As for the second matter, namely the details, we say:
Regarding the bestowal of the Prophet’s heart upon Imam Husain (a.s.), its proof is the statement of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.):
“Indeed, he is the lifeblood of my heart.” [337]
Likewise, the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) displayed a special affection toward him which he did not display toward others when meeting them.
For example, although he would be sitting among his companions with all the dignity and composure of Prophethood, whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) came, he would stop speaking, rise to his feet, go out to receive him, place him upon his blessed shoulders, bring him forward, and seat him in his lap.
Even more astonishing than this was that whenever Imam Husain (a.s.) entered while the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) was delivering a sermon from the pulpit, he would interrupt the sermon, descend from the pulpit, and go to receive him.
He would say:
“By Allah, I did not even realize that I had come down from the pulpit.”
This is narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar. [338]
This statement is an indication of the intensity of his love and heartfelt attachment.
Even more remarkable is the narration transmitted by Ibn Majah in his Sunan and by al-Zamakhshari in al-Fa’iq, that one day the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) saw Imam Husain (a.s.) playing with children in an alleyway.
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) moved toward him and stretched out one of his hands to take hold of him, but the child ran from one side to another, and the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) playfully followed him until he caught him.
Then he placed one hand beneath his chin and the other upon his head, lifted him up, placed his mouth upon his mouth, kissed him, and then said:
“I am from Imam Husain (a.s.), and Imam Husain (a.s.) is from me.”
“May Allah love whoever loves Imam Husain (a.s.). Imam Husain (a.s.) is a grandson from among the grandsons.” [339]
Know that this love and attachment to Imam Husain (a.s.) extended also to those who love him.
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) would call Allah to witness and say:
“I love Imam Husain (a.s.), and I love those who love him.”
And he would say:
“May Allah love those who love Imam Husain (a.s.).” [340]
One day he saw a child in the street. He sat down, took the child, and showed him affection.
Someone asked him the reason for this.
The Prophet (s.a.w.a.) replied:
“This child loves my son Imam Husain (a.s.), for I saw him taking the dust from his footsteps and placing it upon his face.”
“And Jibra’il informed me that he will be among the helpers of Imam Husain (a.s.) in Karbala.” [341]
And we too hope that we may be among those who love that noble Imam (a.s.), so that the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) may love us, and that Allah the Exalted, through the supplication of that noble Prophet (s.a.w.a.), may also love us and forgive our sins.
