An-Nahl Ayah 45-47

Translation (M. H. Shakir): Do they then who plan evil feel secure that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up, or that the chastisement will not come upon them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro, then they shall not be able to escape; Or that He will not seize them with a gradual diminution? For your Lord is most surely Compassionate, Merciful.

99-/6052 _1- al-‘Ayyāshī: ‘an Ibrāhīm b. ‘Umar, ‘amman sami‘a Abā Ja‘far (alayhi as-salām) yaqūlu: “Inna ‘ahda nabiyyillāh ṣāra ‘inda ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (alayhi as-salām), thumma ṣāra ‘inda Muḥammad b. ‘Alī (alayhi as-salām), thumma yaf‘alu Allāhu mā yashā’, falzam hā’ulā’, fa-idhā kharaja rajulun minhum ma‘ahu thalāthumi’ati rajulin, wa ma‘ahu rāyatu Rasūlillāh (ṣallallāhu ‘alayhi wa ālih), ‘āmidan ilā al-Madīnah ḥattā yamurra bi-l-Baydā’ fayaqūl: hādhā makānu al-qawmi alladhīna khusifa bihim, wa hiya al-āyatu allatī qāla Allāh: a-fa-amin alladhīna makarū as-sayyi’āti an yakhsifa Allāhu bihimu al-arḍa aw ya’tiyahumu al-‘adhābu min ḥaythu lā yash‘urūn* aw ya’khudhahum fī taqallubihim famā hum bi-mu‘jizīn.”

Translation: Al-‘Ayyashi: from Ibrahim ibn ‘Umar, from one who heard Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) say: “The covenant of the Prophet of Allah came to be with ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon him), then it came to be with Muhammad ibn ‘Ali (peace be upon him), then Allah does whatever He wills. So adhere to these. Then when a man from them emerges with three hundred men, and with him is the banner of the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), heading toward Medina until he passes by al-Bayda’, he will say: This is the place of the people who were swallowed up by the earth; and it is the sign which Allah said: ‘Do they then who plan evil feel secure that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up, or that the chastisement will not come upon them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro, then they shall not be able to escape.’”

99-/6053 _2- ‘an Ibn Sinān, ‘an Abī ‘Abdillāh (alayhi as-salām) su’ila ‘an qawli Allāhi Ta‘ālā: a-fa-amin alladhīna makarū as-sayyi’āti an yakhsifa Allāhu bihimu al-arḍa, qāla: “hum a‘dā’ullāh, wa hum yumsakhūna wa yuqdhafūna wa yasīḥūna fī al-arḍ.”

Translation: From Ibn Sinan, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him). He was asked about the saying of Allah, the Exalted: “Do they then who plan evil feel secure that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up?” He said: “They are the enemies of Allah, and they will be transformed (metamorphosed), pelted (with stones), and will roam through the earth.”

99-/6054 _3- ‘an Jābir al-Ju‘fī, ‘an Abī Ja‘far (alayhi as-salām) - fī ḥadīthin ṭawīl - qāla lahu: “wa iyyākum wa shudhādhan min Āli Muḥammad, fa-inna li-Āli Muḥammad wa ‘Alī (alayhim as-salām) rāyatan, wa lighayrihim rāyāt [falzam al-arḍ, wa lā tattabi‘ minhum rajulan abadan ḥattā tarā rajulan min wuldi al-Ḥusayn, ma‘ahu ‘ahdu nabiyyillāh wa rāyatuhu wa silāḥuhu, fa-inna ‘ahda nabiyyillāh ṣāra ‘inda ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn, thumma ṣāra ‘inda Muḥammad b. ‘Alī, wa yaf‘alu Allāhu mā yashā’], falzam hā’ulā’a abadan, wa iyyāka wa man dhakartu laka.

Translation: From Jabir al-Ju‘fi, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him)—in a long hadith—he said to him: “Beware of the odd ones from the family of Muhammad, for the family of Muhammad and ‘Ali (peace be upon them) have one banner, and others have banners. [Adhere to the ground, and never follow any man of them until you see a man from the progeny of al-Husayn, with him the covenant of the Prophet of Allah, his banner, and his weapon; for the covenant of the Prophet of Allah came to be with ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn, then it came to be with Muhammad ibn ‘Ali, and Allah does whatever He wills.] So adhere to these forever, and beware of those I have mentioned to you. Then when a man from them emerges, with him are three hundred and some ten men, and with him is the banner of the Messenger of Allah (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family), heading toward Medina until he passes by al-Bayda’, until he says: This is the place of the people who were swallowed up by the earth; and it is the sign which Allah, the Exalted, said: ‘Do they then who plan evil feel secure that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up, or that the chastisement will not come upon them whence they do not perceive? Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro, then they shall not be able to escape.’”

Translation (M. H. Shakir): Do they not consider that whatever thing Allah has created casts its shadow to the right and to the left, making obeisance to Allah while they are humble? And whatever creature that is in the heavens and that is in the earth makes obeisance to Allah only, and the angels (too) and they do not show pride. They fear their Lord above them and do what they are commanded. And Allah has said: Do not take two gods. He is only one Allah: so of Me, Me (only), should you be afraid.

99-/6055 _4- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, qāl: qawluhu: a-fa-amin alladhīna makarū as-sayyi’āt yā Muḥammad, wa huwa istifhām: an yakhsifa Allāhu bihimu al-arḍ aw ya’tiyahumu al-‘adhābu min ḥaythu lā yash‘urūn* aw ya’khudhahum fī taqallubihim famā hum bi-mu‘jizīn — qāl: idhā jā’ū wa dhahabū fī at-tijārāti wa fī a‘mālihim, fa-ya’khudhuhum fī tilka al-ḥālah; aw ya’khudhahum ‘alā takhawwuf — qāl: ‘alā tayaqquẓ — fa-inna rabbakum la-ra’ūfun raḥīm.

Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His statement: “Do they then who plan evil feel secure, O Muhammad?”—it is an interrogative—“that Allah will not make the earth to swallow them up, or that the chastisement will not come upon them from whence they do not perceive? Or that He will not seize them in their going to and fro, then they shall not be able to escape”: He said, when they come and go in their trades and in their occupations, He seizes them in that state. “Or that He will not seize them ‘ala takhawwuf (on a state of apprehension),” he said: on alertness. “For your Lord is most surely Compassionate, Merciful.”

99-/6056 _1- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, qāl qawluhu: a-wa lam yaraw ilā mā khalaqa Allāhu min shay’in yatafayya’u ẓilāluhu ‘ani al-yamīn wa ash-shamā’il sujjadan lillāhi wa hum dākhirūn — qāl: taḥwīlu kulli ẓillin khalaqahullāh huwa sujūdahu lillāh, li-annahu laysa shay’un illā lahu ẓillun yataḥarrak, fa-taḥrīkahu wa taḥwīluhu sujūdahu.

Qāl: wa qawluhu: wa lillāhi yasjudu mā fī as-samāwāti wa mā fī al-arḍi min dābbah wa al-malā’ikatu wa hum lā yastakbirūn* yakhāfūna rabbahum min fawqihim wa yaf‘alūna mā yu’marūn. Qāl: al-malā’ikah mā qaddara Allāhu lahum, yu’marūna fīhi. Thumma iḥtajja Allāhu ‘azza wa jall ‘alā ath-thanawiyyah, fa-qāl: lā tattakhidhū ilāhayni ithnayn innamā huwa ilāhun wāḥid fa-iyyāya farhabūn.

Translation: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said, regarding His statement: “Do they not consider that whatever thing Allah has created casts its shadow to the right and to the left, prostrating to Allah while they are humbled”: The shifting of every shadow that Allah created is its prostration to Allah, because there is nothing but that it has a shadow that moves—its movement and shifting is its prostration. And His statement: “And to Allah prostrates whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth of living creature, and the angels, and they do not show pride. They fear their Lord above them and do what they are commanded”: he said, the angels [do] what Allah has decreed for them—they are commanded in it. Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, argued against the dualists, saying: “Do not take two gods; He is only one God; so of Me, Me alone, be in awe.”

Translation: Al-Tabrisi in al-Ihtijaj: He said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked: It was said to him, “And why is it not possible that the Maker of the world be more than one?” Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Your saying that they are two does not escape one of the following: either they are both pre-eternal and powerful, or they are both weak, or one is powerful and the other weak. If they are both powerful, then why does not each repel the other and single himself out for Lordship? And if you claim that one is powerful and the other weak, it is established that He is one, as you say, due to the evident incapacity in the second. And if you say they are two, it is not without being either concordant in every respect or divergent in every respect. When we see the creation ordered, the celestial sphere running, and the alternation of night and day and the sun and the moon—this indicates the soundness of governance and management and the harmony of affairs, and that the Manager is One.”
