Indeed We have prepared for those who wrong the Family of Muhammad of their right a Fire.’”
(Quran 18:29 reference: Standard text is “And say: The truth is from your Lord; so let him who pleases believe, and let him who pleases disbelieve; surely We have prepared for the unjust a fire…”. M. 99-/6666 _7- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, regarding His saying: “And say: The truth is from your Lord,” said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “This verse was sent down thus: ‘And say: The truth is from your Lord,’ meaning the guardianship of ‘Alī (peace be upon him); ‘so whoever wills—let him believe, and whoever wills—let him disbelieve. Indeed We have prepared for those who wrong the Family of Muhammad of their right a Fire; its enclosures will encompass them; and if they seek succor, they will be succored with water like molten brass.’ He said: ‘Al-muhl is what remains at the bottom of boiled oil; it sears the faces. Evil is the drink and evil the resting-place.’ Then he mentioned what Allah has prepared for the believers, and said: ‘Surely those who believe and do good, We do not waste the reward of him who does good work …’ up to His saying: ‘and goodly the resting-place.’”

99-/6668 _9- And from him (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, exalted is He: “On the Day when the earth shall be changed into a different earth” [2], he said: “It will be changed into a pure white loaf of bread, from which people will eat until the reckoning is finished.” Someone said to him: “On that day they will be too preoccupied for eating and drinking!” He replied: “The son of Adam was created hollow; he must have food and drink. Are they more preoccupied, or those in the Fire who cried for help? Allah said: ‘And if they cry for help, they will be helped with water like molten brass.’”

99-/6673 _5- And from the book also: Sa‘d said: ‘Abbād b. Sulaymān narrated to us, from Muhammad b. Sulaymān, from his father Sulaymān, from ‘Aytham b. Aslam, from Mu‘āwiyah b. ‘Ammār al-Duhnī, from Abu ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him), who said: “Abu Bakr came in to ‘Alī (peace be upon him) and said to him: ‘The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) did not introduce to us regarding your matter anything after the Day of the Guardianship; and I bear witness that you are my master, acknowledging that; and I gave you salutation in the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) as Commander [1] of the Faithful; and the Messenger of Allah informed us that you are his legatee, his heir, and his successor over his family and wives, and he did not prevent you from that; so the inheritance of the Messenger of Allah and the affairs of his wives passed to you; but he did not inform us that you are his successor after him; and we incur no guilt in that between us and you, nor any sin between us and Allah, Mighty and Majestic.’
‘Alī (peace be upon him) said to him: ‘What would you say [2] if you were to see the Messenger of Allah until he informs you that I am more entitled to the seat you are in, and that if you do not relinquish it you have disbelieved?’ He said: ‘If I see the Messenger of Allah until he informs me of some of this, I will be satisfied with it.’ He said: ‘Then meet me when you have prayed Maghrib.’
He returned after Maghrib, and he took him by the hand and brought him out to the Masjid of Qubā’; and lo, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) was sitting facing the qiblah, and said: ‘O ‘Atīq, you have leaped upon ‘Alī and sat in the seat of prophethood, while I had forewarned you about that! So remove this tunic [3] with which you have clothed yourself and leave it to ‘Alī (peace be upon him), otherwise your appointed place is the Fire.’
Then he took him by the hand and brought him out; the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) rose from them; and the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) went to Salmān and said to him: ‘O Salmān, do you not know that thus-and-thus has occurred?’ Salmān said: ‘He will certainly make it public about you, and he will lay it open to his companion and inform him of the report.’ The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) laughed and said: ‘As for informing his companion—he will indeed do so; but by Allah, they will never mention it again until the Day of Resurrection; they are more protective of themselves [4] than that.’
Abu Bakr then met ‘Umar and said: ‘Indeed ‘Alī did such-and-such, and he did such-and-such, and the Messenger of Allah said such-and-such.’ ‘Umar said to him: ‘Woe to you! How little is your sense! By Allah, what you are in at this moment is but some of the sorcery of the son of Abū Kabshah. Have you forgotten the sorcery of the Banū Hāshim? And how would Muhammad return? The dead do not return. What you are in is greater than the sorcery of the Banū Hāshim. So shoulder this tunic and proceed [5] in it.’”

99-/6677 _9- The author of (Durar al-Manāqib): from Ibn ‘Abbās, who said: “While the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) was going around the lanes of Madīnah, Abu Bakr met him. ‘Alī (peace be upon him) took him by the hand and said: ‘O Abu Bakr, be conscious of Allah who created you from dust, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a man. Remember your return, O son of Abī Quhāfah; and remember what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said, and you knew what he had enjoined upon you at Ghadīr Khumm. If you return the matter to me, I will supplicate Allah to forgive you for what you have done; and if you do not, then what will be your answer to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family)?’ He said to him: ‘Show me the Messenger of Allah in a dream to turn me back from what I am upon, for I obey him.’ The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: ‘How so, when I will show him to you while awake?’
Then ‘Alī (peace be upon him) took him by the hand until he brought him to the Masjid of Qubā’; and he saw the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sitting in his mihrāb, with his shrouds upon him, saying: ‘O Abu Bakr, did I not say that to you time and again, that ‘Alī b. Abī Tālib (peace be upon him) is my successor and my legatee; obedience to him is obedience to me, and disobedience to him is disobedience to me; obedience to him is obedience to Allah, and disobedience to him is disobedience to Allah?!’
Abu Bakr then went out terrified and alarmed, having resolved to return the matter to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), when a man of his companions met him; he informed him of what he had seen. He said: ‘This is sorcery from the sorcery of the Banū Hāshim. Remain [1] upon what you are upon, and hold your place.’ He did not cease until he turned him away from what was intended.”

أقول:ما رواه أصحاب الحديث و الروايات في هذا المعنى كثيرة،اقتصرنا على ذلك مخافة الإطالة.
99-/6678 _10- And some scholars mentioned, in a book of his, saying: “The Shī‘ah en masse have narrated that when Abu Bakr sat in his seat and called to himself for the imamate, the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) argued against him with what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) had said in many situations—that ‘Alī (peace be upon him) is his successor, legatee, minister, the payer of his debts and fulfiller of his promises, and that he (may Allah bless him and his family) commanded them to follow him in his life and after his death. Among the replies of Abu Bakr was that he said: ‘I have been put in authority over you, though I am not the best among you; relieve me.’
The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said to him: ‘Who will relieve you? Stay in your house and hand over the matter to the one to whom Allah and His Messenger assigned it. And do not be deceived by the rabble of Quraysh, for they are slaves of the world; they remove the truth from its place out of coveting authority after you, and to attain of your world during your life.’ He faltered in his answer, and began to promise him to hand over the matter to him. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said one day: ‘If I show you the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and he commands you to follow me and hand over the matter to me, will you not accept his word?’ He smiled, laughing and amazed at his (peace be upon him) words, and said: ‘Yes.’ So he [2] took him by the hand and brought him into the mosque—which is the Masjid of Qubā’ in Madīnah—and showed him the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) saying to him: ‘O Abu Bakr, have you forgotten what I say regarding ‘Alī? So hand over this matter to him, follow him, and do not oppose him.’ When Abu Bakr heard that, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) disappeared from his sight, he was stunned and bewildered; trembling [3] took hold of him, and he resolved to hand over the matter to him—then he adopted a second opinion.”
I say: What the scholars of hadith and narration have reported on this meaning are many; we have limited ourselves to this, fearing prolixity.

/6679 _11- Ibn Shahr Āshūb: from the Merits of Ishāq al-‘Adl—that during the caliphate of Hishām there was a preacher who cursed ‘Alī (peace be upon him) on the pulpit. He said: “A hand came out from the grave of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family)—the hand could be seen but not the forearm—holding at ‘sixty-three’; and then a voice from the grave of the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): ‘Woe to you regarding my affair [1]! Have you disbelieved in Him who created you from dust, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a man?’ Then it cast what was in it, and there was a blue smoke. He did not descend from the pulpit except blind, being led; and three days did not pass before he died.”

/6680 _12- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said, regarding His saying: “And set forth to them a parable of two men: for one of them We made two gardens of grape-vines, and We surrounded them with palms, and in the midst of them We placed corn,” that it was revealed concerning a man who had two great orchards, abundant in fruit—as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, described—in which were palm-trees, crops, and water. He had a poor neighbor; the rich man boasted over that poor man and said to him: “I am greater in wealth than you and mightier in men.” Then he entered his garden and said: “I do not think that this will ever perish. And I do not think the Hour is coming; and if I am returned to my Lord, I shall certainly find a better resort than this.”
The poor man said to him: “Have you disbelieved in Him who created you from dust, then from a drop, then fashioned you into a man? But as for me, He—Allah—is my Lord, and I do not associate anyone with my Lord.” Then the poor man said to the rich: “Why did you not, when you entered your garden, say: ‘What Allah has willed; there is no power except with Allah’? If you see me less than you in wealth and children—
“Then it may be that my Lord will give me better than your garden and will send on it a thunderbolt from heaven so that it will become a smooth, slippery plain—meaning, burned—or its water will sink into the ground so you will never be able to obtain it.” What the poor man said befell it that very night; the rich man arose, wringing his hands over what he had expended on it while it was fallen down upon its trellises, saying: “Would that I had not associated anyone with my Lord!” And he had no host to help him against Allah, nor was he able to defend himself. This is the punishment for insolence.
