S 99 Ayat 1 to 8

Qur'ān, Sūrat al-Zalzalah [99:1–8], M.H. Shakir translation: In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful.

When the earth is shaken with her (violent) shaking,

And the earth brings forth her burdens,

And man says: What has befallen her?

On that day she shall tell her news,

Because your Lord had inspired her.

On that day men shall come forth in sundry bodies that they may be shown their works.

So he who has done an atom's weight of good shall see it,

And he who has done an atom's weight of evil shall see it.

99-/11828 Ibn Bābawayh narrated: Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad, from his father, from Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad, who said: Abū ʿAbdillāh al-Rāzī narrated to us from Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Abī Naṣr, from Rūḥ ibn Ṣāliḥ, from Hārūn ibn Khārijah, who raised it to Fāṭimah (ʿalayhā al-salām). She said:

“There was an earthquake during the time of Abū Bakr, and the people were terrified, so they rushed to Abū Bakr and ʿUmar. They found the two of them also frightened and going towards ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām), so the people followed them until they reached the door of ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām). Then ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) came out to them, seemingly unconcerned by what they were experiencing. He proceeded onward, and the people followed him until he reached a high mound and sat upon it, while they sat around him, watching the walls of Madīnah trembling back and forth. Then ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) said to them: ‘It is as if you are alarmed by what you see?’ They said: ‘And how could we not be, when we have never seen anything like it before!’ He moved his lips (silently), then struck the earth with his hand and said: ‘What is the matter with you? Be still.’ So it became still. They were more astonished at this than they had been earlier when he first came out to them. He said to them: ‘Are you amazed by what I did?’ They replied: ‘Yes.’ He said: ‘I am the man regarding whom Allah, the Exalted, said: “When the earth is shaken with her (violent) shaking, and the earth brings forth her burdens, and man says: What has befallen her?” [Qur’ān 99:1–3] I am the man who says to it: What is the matter with you? On that Day she will tell her news—she tells her news about me.’”

We went out with ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) while he was walking through the market, commanding them to fulfill just measure and weight. When he reached the gate of the palace, he struck the earth with his blessed foot, and it trembled. Then he said: “It is her! What is the matter with you? Be still! Indeed, the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (ʿalayhis-salām), was sitting in al-Raḥbah when the earth trembled. So ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) struck it with his hand and said: “Be still! It is but a standing (motion). And if that (Final Tremor) had been it, you would have informed me. Verily, I am the one to whom the earth shall tell its news.” Then he recited: ‘When the earth is shaken with her (violent) shaking, and the earth brings forth her burdens, and man says: What has befallen her? On that day she shall tell her news, because your Lord had inspired her.’ [Qurʾān 99:1–5] Then he said: “Do you not see that it speaks about its Lord?”

Tamīm ibn Ḥidhyam narrated to me:

We were with ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) when we set out toward Basrah. While we were encamped, the earth suddenly trembled. So ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) struck it with his hand and said: “What is the matter with you? [Be still!]” So it became still. Then he turned his noble face toward us and said: “Indeed, if this were the earthquake that Allah mentioned in His Book, it would have responded to me. But this is not that one.”

Muḥammad ibn Hārūn al-Bakrī also narrated, with his chain of transmission to Hārūn ibn Khārijah, a ḥadīth which he raised to the Lady of the Women, Fāṭimah (ʿalayhā al-salām). She said:

“There was an earthquake during the time of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, and the people panicked and rushed to them. They found the two of them already rushing in fear toward the Commander of the Faithful (ʿalayhis-salām).” — and then he mentioned a report similar to what was narrated earlier.

99-/11833 Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan ibn Muḥammad ibn Jumhūr al-ʿAmmī narrated: al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm al-Tammār said:

*I left the gathering of one of the jurists and passed by Salmān al-Shādhakūnī. He asked me, “Where have you come from?” I replied, “From the gathering of so-and-so” — referring to the author of the book al-Wāḥidah. He asked, “What does he say in it?” I replied, “Something of the virtues of the Commander of the Faithful, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (ʿalayhis-salām).” He said: “By Allah, I shall relate to you a merit that a Qurashī narrated to me from another Qurashī, until it reached six individuals among them.”

Then he said: *The graves of al-Baqīʿ trembled during the time of ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, and the people of Madīnah cried out in alarm. ʿUmar and the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa ālihi) came out, supplicating for the shaking to subside. But the tremor only intensified and extended to the walls of Madīnah, to the point that its residents planned to evacuate the city.

At that moment, ʿUmar said: ‘Bring to me Abū al-Ḥasan, ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib (ʿalayhis-salām).’ So he came. ʿUmar said to him: ‘O Abū al-Ḥasan! Do you not see the trembling of the graves of al-Baqīʿ, which has extended to the walls of Madīnah? Its people are preparing to flee!’

ʿAlī (ʿalayhis-salām) replied: ‘Bring me one hundred men from the companions of the Messenger of Allah (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa ālihi) who fought at Badr.’ From among the hundred, he selected ten and placed them behind him. Then he placed the remaining ninety behind those ten. There was not a person left in Madīnah — no married woman, nor young woman — who did not come out.

He then called for Abū Dharr, Miqdād, Salmān, and ʿAmmār and said to them: ‘Stand before me.’

They proceeded until they reached the center of al-Baqīʿ while the people were encircling him. He struck the earth with his foot and said three times: ‘What is the matter with you? What is the matter with you?’ The earth settled.

He said: ‘Allah has spoken the truth, and so has His Messenger (ṣallā Allāhu ʿalayhi wa ālihi). He informed me of this incident, of this day, of this very hour, and of the people gathering for it. Indeed, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says in His Book: “When the earth is shaken with her (violent) shaking, and the earth brings forth her burdens, and man says: What has befallen her?” [Qurʾān 99:1–3]

Had it truly been the final earthquake, I would have said, ‘What is the matter with it?’ and the earth would have brought forth its burdens for me.’

Then he turned away, and the people turned away with him, and the tremor had ceased.”*

/11834 ʿAlī ibn Ibrāhīm, regarding the meaning of the sūrah:

“When the earth is shaken with her (violent) shaking, and the earth brings forth her burdens” — he said: It refers to people.

“And man says: What has befallen her?” — he said: That man is the Commander of the Faithful (ʿalayhis-salām).

“On that day she shall tell her news” to “in scattered groups (ashtātan)” — he said: They will come forth in scattered groups: believers, disbelievers, and hypocrites.

“That they may be shown their works” — he said: They will be shown what they did.

Then he said:

“So whoever does an atom's weight of good shall see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil shall see it” — and this is a refutation of the determinists (al-mujbirah), who claim that humans have no control over their actions.

99-/11835 It is narrated in the report of Abū al-Jārūd from Abū Jaʿfar (ʿalayhis-salām), regarding the saying of Allah, the Exalted:

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good shall see it” — He said: “If the person is among the people of Hell, and he had done even an atom’s weight of good in the world, he will see it on the Day of Resurrection as a regret — if his deed was not done for the sake of Allah. And as for the saying, ‘And whoever does an atom’s weight of evil shall see it’ — if the person is among the people of Paradise, he will see that evil on the Day of Resurrection, then Allah, the Exalted, will forgive him.”
