Translation: The Gate of Turning (to God), and the Syrian Corner is the Gate of Seeking Intercession, and the Yemeni Corner is the Gate of Repentance; and it is the gate of the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them) and their Shī‘a to the Stone. Thus this House is God’s proof on His earth over His creation. When Adam descended to the earth, he descended upon al-Safā; therefore God derived for him a name from Adam’s name, by His saying: “Surely Allah chose Adam,” and Eve descended upon al-Marwa, so God derived for her a name from the word for woman (mar’a). Adam came down with a mirror from Paradise. When Adam did not hang the mirror beside the Maqām, though he would incline toward it, he asked his Lord to send down the House to the earth; so He sent it down, and it came to be upon the face of the earth. Adam would incline toward it. Its height above the ground was seven cubits; it had four doors; its width was twenty-five by twenty-five cubits, square, and its surrounding portico was two hundred by two hundred cubits.

99-/415 _17- From Jābir ibn ‘Abd Allāh, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), he said: “Iblīs was the first to sing, the first to wail, [and the first to chant]. When Adam ate from the tree, he sang; when he was made to descend, he chanted; and when he settled upon the earth he wailed, reminding him of what was in Paradise.”

Translation (Qur’an 2:37-38, M. H. Shakir):

Then Adam received (some) words from his Lord, so He turned to him mercifully; surely He is Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.

We said: Go forth from this (state) all; so surely there will come to you a guidance from Me, then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.

I acted evil and wronged myself, so forgive me, and You are the best of forgivers. There is no god but You; Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise. 99-/418 _3- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm said: My father narrated to me, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Abān ibn ‘Uthmān, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him). He said: “Adam (peace be upon him) remained upon al-Ṣafā for forty mornings, prostrating, weeping over Paradise and over his departure from the neighborhood of Allah, Mighty and Majestic. Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended to him and said: O Adam, why do you weep? He said: O Gabriel, why should I not weep, when Allah has expelled me from His neighborhood and sent me down to the world? He said: O Adam, repent to Him. He said: And how do I repent? So Allah sent down to him a dome of light at the site of the House, whose light shone upon the mountains of Mecca; that is the sanctuary. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, commanded Gabriel (peace be upon him) to set markers around it. He said: Rise, O Adam. He brought him out on the Day of Tarwiyah and commanded him to bathe and enter ihrām. He had been expelled from Paradise on the first day of Dhu al-Qa‘dah. When it was the eighth day of Dhu al-Ḥijjah, Gabriel took him out to Minā, and he spent the night there. When morning came, he brought him to ‘Arafāt; he had taught him, when he brought him out of Mecca, ihrām and commanded him with talbiyah. When the sun passed the zenith on the Day of ‘Arafah, he cut off the talbiyah and commanded him to bathe. When he had prayed ‘aṣr, he made him stand at ‘Arafāt and taught him the words he received from his Lord, which are: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; there is no god but You. I acted evil and wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me; surely You are the All-Forgiving, the Merciful. Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; there is no god but You. I acted evil and wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me; surely You are the best of forgivers. Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise; there is no god but You. I acted evil and wronged myself and I confess my sin, so forgive me; surely You are the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.’ Adam remained until the sun set, raising his hands to the heaven, imploring and weeping to Allah. When the sun set, he returned him to al-Mash‘ar, and he spent the night there. When morning came, he stood at al-Mash‘ar al-Ḥarām and supplicated Allah, Exalted, with words, and He turned to him (in mercy). Then he moved to Minā, and Gabriel commanded him to shave the hair that was upon him, so he shaved. Then he returned him to Mecca and brought him to the first Jamrah. Iblīs confronted him there and said: O Adam, where are you going? Gabriel commanded him to pelt him with seven pebbles and to magnify (say Allāhu Akbar) with each pebble; so he did. Then he went on, and Iblīs confronted him at the second Jamrah; he commanded him to pelt him with seven pebbles; he pelted and magnified with each pebble. Then he went on, and Iblīs confronted him at the third Jamrah; he commanded him to pelt him with seven pebbles and to magnify with each pebble; he pelted and magnified with each pebble. Iblīs—may Allah curse him—departed. Gabriel said to him: You will never see him after this day. He then went with him to the Sacred House and commanded him to circumambulate it seven times, so he did. He said to him: Allah has accepted your repentance, and your wife has been made lawful for you.” He said: “When Adam completed his Hajj, the angels met him at al-Abṭaḥ and said: O Adam, may your Hajj be accepted; indeed, we performed Hajj to this House two thousand years before you.””

99-/419 _4- ‘Alī ibn Ibrāhīm: My father narrated to me, from al-Ḥasan ibn Maḥbūb, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him). He said: “Adam’s lifespan, from the day Allah created him until the day He took him, was nine hundred and thirty years. He was buried in Mecca. He was given life on a Friday after the zenith; then He fashioned his wife from the lower part of his ribs and settled him in His Garden on that very day. He did not remain settled therein except six hours of that day before he disobeyed Allah; and He expelled them both from the Garden after sunset, so he did not spend the night therein.”

99-/420 _5- Ibn Bābawayh said: ‘Alī ibn al-Faḍl ibn al-‘Abbās al-Baghdādī narrated to us: I read to Aḥmad ibn Muḥammad ibn Sulaymān ibn al-Ḥārith, who said: Muḥammad ibn ‘Alī ibn Khalaf al-‘Aṭṭār narrated to us, who said: Ḥusayn al-Ashqar narrated to us, who said: ‘Umar ibn Abī al-Miqdām, from his father, from Sa‘īd ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbās, said: I asked the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) about the words which Adam received from his Lord so He turned to him (in mercy). 99-/422 _7- Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Jābir, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), he said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) said: When Allah sent Adam down to the earth, He commanded him to till with his own hand so that he would eat from his own toil after Paradise and its bliss. He remained raising his voice imploringly and weeping over the Garden for two hundred years. Then he prostrated to Allah a prostration and did not raise his head for three days and nights. Then he said: O Lord, did You not create me? Allah said: I did. He said: And did Your mercy not precede Your wrath for me? Allah said: It did. He said: So have you been patient or thankful? Adam said: There is no god but You; glory be to You. I have wronged myself, so forgive me; surely You are the All-Forgiving, the Merciful. So Allah had mercy on him for that and turned to him; surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.”

99-/423 _8- Muḥammad ibn Muslim, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), said: He said: “The words which Adam received from his Lord, so He turned to him (in mercy) and guided (him), were: ‘Glory be to You, O Allah, and with Your praise—Lord—indeed I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me; surely You are the All-Forgiving, the Merciful. O Allah, there is no god but You; glory be to You and with Your praise (indeed I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me; surely You are the best of forgivers. O Allah, there is no god but You; glory be to You and with Your praise). Indeed I have done evil and wronged myself, so forgive me; surely You are the All-Forgiving, the Merciful.’”

99-/424 _9- And al-Ḥasan ibn Rāshid said: When you awaken from your sleep, say the words that Adam received from his Lord: “Subbūḥ, Quddūs, Lord of the angels and the Spirit; Your mercy has outstripped Your wrath; there is no god but You; I have wronged myself, so forgive me and have mercy on me; surely You are the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful, the All-Forgiving.”

99-/425 _10- From ‘Abd al-Raḥmān ibn Kathīr, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), he said: “Allah, Blessed and Exalted, presented to Adam, at the Covenant, his progeny. The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) passed by him while leaning upon ‘Alī (peace be upon him), with Fāṭima (peace be upon her) following them, and al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them) following Fāṭima. Allah said: O Adam, beware of looking upon them with envy, lest I send you down from My neighborhood. When Allah settled him in the Garden, the Prophet, and ‘Alī, and Fāṭima, and al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them) were represented to him, and he looked upon them with envy; then the authority (wilāyah) was presented to him, and he denied it, so the Garden pelted him with its leaves. When he repented to Allah of his envy, acknowledged the authority, and supplicated by the right of the Five—Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon them)—Allah forgave him. That is His saying: ‘Then Adam received from his Lord words…’”

99-/426 _11- From Muḥammad ibn ‘Īsā ibn ‘Abd Allāh al-‘Alawī, from his father, from his grandfather, from ‘Alī (peace be upon him). He said: “The words which Adam received from his Lord were that he said: ‘O Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad that You turn toward me (in mercy).’ He said: ‘And what is your knowledge of Muhammad?’ He said: ‘I saw his name written in Your greatest pavilion while I was in the Garden.’”

99-/427 _12- The Imām Abū Muḥammad al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Most High, said: ‘Then Adam received from his Lord words to say; so he said them, and He turned toward him by them—surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful, the Oft-returning who accepts repentance, the Merciful to those who repent. We said: Go forth from it, all together.’ In the first instance He commanded that the two should descend; in the second He commanded that they should all descend together, that none of them should precede another. The descent pertained to Adam and Eve from the Garden, and the serpent also descended from it, for it had been among its finest creatures; while Iblīs descended from its surroundings, for entry into it had been forbidden to him. ‘So surely there will come to you and to your children after you from Me guidance, O Adam and O Iblīs. Then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve’—no fear shall be upon them when the opposers fear, and they shall not grieve when (the others) grieve. When the sin slipped from Adam and he apologized to his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, he said: ‘O Lord, turn toward me, accept my excuse, restore me to my rank, and raise my degree in Your presence; for indeed the deficiency of sin and its humiliation have become evident upon my limbs and all of my body.’ Allah, Most High, said: ‘O Adam, do you not remember My command to you that you should call upon Me by Muhammad and his pure family at your hardships and calamities, in the sudden misfortunes that weigh heavily upon you?’ Adam said: ‘Yes, O Lord.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘Then seek nearness by Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn in particular, and call upon Me; I will answer you in what you seek and add to you beyond what you desire.’ Adam said: ‘O Lord, O my God, has their station with You reached such that by seeking nearness through them You accept my repentance and forgive my sin—while I am he for whom You caused Your angels to prostrate, settled him in Your Garden, married him to Ḥawwā’, Your bondwoman, and assigned to serve him the noble angels?’ Allah, Most High, said: ‘O Adam, I only commanded the angels to magnify you—by prostrating to you—since you were a vessel for these lights. Had you asked Me by them before your sin to protect you from it and to make you aware of the motives of your enemy Iblīs so that you might guard yourself, I would have done that. But what is known in My prior knowledge proceeds in accordance with My knowledge. Now then, call upon Me by them so that I may answer you.’ At that Adam said: ‘O Allah, by the rank of Muhammad and his pure family—by the rank of Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn, and the pure ones from their progeny—that You favor me by accepting my repentance, forgiving my sin, and restoring me, from Your honors, to my rank.’ Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘I have accepted your repentance, turned with My good pleasure toward you, directed My favors to you, restored you to your rank among My honors, and increased your share of My mercies.’ That is His saying, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Then Adam received from his Lord words, so He turned toward him; surely He is the Oft-returning (to mercy), the Merciful.’ Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to those He sent down—Adam, Eve, Iblīs, and the serpent: ‘And for you on the earth is a dwelling and provision for a time’—for you on earth is a place wherein you live, and its nights and days urge you toward striving for the Hereafter; glad tidings to him who takes provision from it for the Abode of Permanence. For you on earth is benefit until the time of your death; for Allah, Most High, brings forth from it your crops and your fruits, and by it He settles you and bestows favor upon you. And in it, as well, He tests you with afflictions: He delights you at times with the bliss of this world to remind you of the pure bliss of the Hereafter, and He tests you at times with the afflictions of this world, which may contain mercies within them and, in their layers, the severe retributions whose disliked aspects are averted from the one tested by them—so that He may warn you thereby of the everlasting punishment which no well-being mixes with it, and within whose layers there is found no rest and no mercy.”

99-/428 _13- The Imām Abū Muḥammad al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “’Alī ibn al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him) said: My father narrated to me, from his father, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), who said: O servants of Allah, when Adam saw the light shining from his loins—for the Most High had transferred our forms from the pinnacle of the Throne to his back—he saw the light but did not distinguish the forms. He said: O Lord, what are these lights? Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘They are the lights of forms which I have transferred from the most noble precincts of My Throne to your back; for this I commanded the angels to prostrate to you, since you were a vessel for those forms.’ Adam said: O Lord, would that You clarify them for me. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: Look, O Adam, to the pinnacle of the Throne. Adam looked, and the light of our forms from Adam’s back fell upon the pinnacle of the Throne, and the images of the lights of our forms which were in his back were imprinted there—as the face of a man is imprinted in a clear mirror—so he saw our forms. He said: What are these forms, O Lord? Allah, Most High, said: O Adam, these are the forms of the best of My creatures and creations: this is Muhammad, and I am al-Maḥmūd, the Praiseworthy in My acts—I derived for him a name from My Name; and this is ‘Alī, and I am al-‘Alī, the Most High—I derived for him a name from My Name; and this is Fāṭima, and I am Fāṭir (Originator) of the heavens and the earth—I sever (fāṭim) My enemies from My mercy on the Day of Judgment, and I sever My friends from what befalls and mars them—so I derived for her a name from My Name; and these two are al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, and I am al-Muḥsin al-Mujmil—I derived for them both a name from My Name. These are the elect of My creation and the nobles of My creatures; by them I take and by them I give; by them I punish and by them I reward. So seek nearness by them to Me, O Adam; and when a calamity befalls you, make them your intercessors to Me, for I have sworn upon Myself a true oath that I shall not disappoint one who hopes in them nor reject a supplicant of theirs.’ Therefore, when the sin slipped from him, he called upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic, by them, so He turned toward him and forgave him.” And, God willing, there will come a ḥadīth regarding the meaning by which Allah turned to Adam in His saying, Most High: “And they said, ‘Our hearts are wrapped’” (the verse).

99-/429 _14- Ibn Bābawayh, with his chain from Mu‘ammar ibn Rāshid, who said: I heard Abū ‘Abd Allāh al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him) say: “A Jew came to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family), stood before him, and stared intently at him. He said: O Jew, what is your need? He said: Are you superior, or is Moses son of ‘Imrān, the prophet whom Allah spoke to, upon whom He sent down the Torah and the staff, for whom He split the sea, and shaded with the clouds? The Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family) said to him: It is disliked for a servant to declare himself pure, but I say: When Adam (peace be upon him) committed the sin, his repentance was [that he said]: ‘O Allah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad that You forgive me’; so Allah forgave him. And indeed when Noah boarded the Ark and feared drowning, he said: ‘O Allah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad that You save me from drowning’; so Allah saved him from it. And when Abraham (peace be upon him) was cast into the fire, he said: ‘O Allah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad that You save me from it’; so He made it coolness and peace upon him. And when Moses threw down his staff and felt fear within himself, he said: ‘O Allah, I ask You by the right of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad that You deliver me’; so Allah, Majestic is His Majesty, said: ‘Fear not; surely you are the most superior’ (Qur’an 20:68). O Jew, if Moses were to reach my time and did not believe in me and in my prophethood, his belief would not benefit him at all, nor would prophethood benefit him. O Jew, and from my progeny is the Mahdī; when he appears, Jesus son of Mary will descend to help him, will put him forward, and will pray behind him.”

99-/430 _15- Ibn Shahr Āshūb: From al-Naṭanzī in al-Khaṣā’iṣ that Ibn ‘Abbās said: When Allah created Adam and breathed into him of His spirit, he sneezed, and said: “Praise be to Allah.” His Lord said to him: “May your Lord have mercy on you.” When the angels were made to prostrate to him, self-admiration entered him. He said: “O Lord, have You created a creation more beloved to You than me?” He said: “Yes; and were it not for them, I would not have created you.” He said: “O Lord, then show them to me.” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed to the angels of the veils: “Lift the veils.” When they were lifted, lo! Adam saw five forms before the Throne. He said: “O Lord, who are these?” He said: “O Adam, this is Muhammad, My Prophet; and this is ‘Alī, Commander of the Faithful, the cousin of My Prophet and his executor; and this is Fāṭima, the daughter of My Prophet; and these two are al-Ḥasan and al-Ḥusayn, the sons of ‘Alī and the grandsons of My Prophet.” Then He said: “O Adam, they are your offspring.” He rejoiced at that. When he committed the sin, he said: “O Lord, I ask You by the right of Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn that You forgive me”; so Allah forgave him. This is what Allah, Most High, said: “Then Adam received from his Lord words.” The words which Adam received from his Lord were: “O Allah, by the right of Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn, that You turn toward me (in mercy),” so Allah turned toward him (in mercy).

99-/431 _16- And from the judge Abū ‘Amr ‘Uthmān ibn Aḥmad, one of the Shaykhs of Ahl al-Sunnah, raising it to Ibn ‘Abbās, from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family): “When sin enveloped Adam, he looked at forms that shone around the Throne. He said: O Lord, I see lights of forms resembling my form; what are they? He said: These lights are the forms of two from your descendants: the name of one of them is Muhammad—I begin prophethood with you and conclude it with him; and the other is his brother and the son of his father’s brother—his name is ‘Alī; I strengthen Muhammad by him and aid him by his hand. The lights around the two are the lights of the progeny of this Prophet from this brother of his. He will marry him his daughter, who will be his wife; through her will be connected the first of creation in faith in him and in affirming him. I shall make her the leader of the women and shall wean her and her progeny from the Fire. The means and the lineages shall be cut off on the Day of Resurrection except his means and his lineage.” So Adam prostrated in thanks to Allah for placing that in his progeny, and Allah compensated him for that prostration by commanding His angels to prostrate to him.”

99-/432 _17- And from al-Ṣādiq (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, Most High: “Then Adam received from his Lord words”: “That the words which Adam received from his Lord were: ‘O Allah, by the right of Muhammad, ‘Alī, Fāṭima, al-Ḥasan, and al-Ḥusayn, that You turn toward me (in mercy)’; so Allah turned toward him (in mercy).”

99-/433 _18- Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Jābir, who said: I asked Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about the interpretation of this verse in the inner sense of the Qur’an: “So surely there will come to you from Me guidance; then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.” He said: “The interpretation of ‘guidance’ is ‘Alī (peace be upon him). Allah said concerning him: ‘Then whoever follows My guidance, no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve.’”

(Qur’an 2:39, M. H. Shakir): And (as to) those who disbelieve and reject Our communications, they are the inmates of the Fire; in it they shall abide.

99-/434 _1- The Imām Abū Muḥammad al-‘Askarī (peace be upon him) said: “Allah, Most High, said: ‘And those who disbelieve and deny Our signs’—which indicate the truthfulness of Muhammad in what he brought of the reports of bygone generations, and in what he conveyed to Allah’s servants of his mention of the preference given by him to ‘Alī and his pure family—the best of men and women after Muhammad, the master of creation—those who repel Muhammad’s truthfulness in his reports and belie him in appointing his friends—‘Alī, the master of the trustees, and the elect from his pure progeny—are the companions of the Fire; they shall abide therein.’”
