22. The Rescue of Hajj Mashallah from Certain Death through the Blessing of Imam Husain (a.s.)
For years I had heard from Kermani friends about the miraculous and amazing healing of Hajj Mashallah Khodadadpour. Last year, on Wednesday 23/1/1391 SH (corresponding to 19 Jumada al-Awwal 1433 AH), during the days commemorating the martyrdom of Lady Fatimah (peace be upon her) in Kerman, I went with Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimeen Aqa Pakzad and the respected host Aqa Mehdi Zarrabi to the home of Hajj Mashallah and heard the story of his healing directly from his own lips.
This incident had happened on Thursday, 1/6/1335 SH (corresponding to 1 Muharram 1376 AH). Now, at age 93, Hajj Mashallah is in excellent health, living a life of hope and pride thanks to the blessings of the Master of Martyrs, after nearly 60 years since that severe and crushing illness.
Hajj Mashallah Khodadadpour, known as Hajj Mashallah Najjar, who is considered a living miracle of Imam Husain (a.s.), related his story as follows:
*“I was 32 years old, working in my carpentry workshop, when I was suddenly struck by a severe nausea. I went to Dr. Mirhossein Vakili, who after examination diagnosed kidney failure and other kidney issues. He prescribed medication and ordered me to rest. Every day my condition worsened. My whole body became swollen. I could not urinate, I was even forbidden from drinking water, and sometimes they only moistened my lips.
I lay flat at home for two whole years. When they finally lifted me to take me to the hospital, they saw that termites had eaten into the mattress and parts of my back, because my body had gone so numb I hadn’t even felt it.
At that time there was no dialysis. They tested various drugs on me, and every day they would put me under electric current twice, and would remove the body’s water with a syringe.
After a six-month course of treatment with no improvement, they discharged me. At home, my condition worsened by the day until, by my doctor’s mediation, I was hospitalized again. After another six months, I was discharged, but my state declined further and I was hospitalized yet again.
One day, the Kerman governor Mr. Samsam visited the hospital and, seeing my very critical condition, told my attending physician Dr. Herman Abrasher, who was German:
‘Send this patient abroad, I will cover all the expenses.’
Dr. Herman replied:
‘This patient cannot be treated anywhere in the world.’
Then he came forward, lifted my eyelids, and said:
‘This patient will not live more than 24 hours, but since he has three children, please send them to an orphanage if you can.’
After Dr. Herman’s statement, my family took me home so that they could spend my final moments beside me.
Some acquaintances suggested giving me old wine as a remedy. I said:
‘According to Imam Sadiq (a.s.), God has placed no cure in what is forbidden. If I must die, I will not touch wine.’
All my friends prayed for me, even in mosques people were praying and pleading to God for my healing.
I had completely lost hope from every direction, but it was the month of Muharram, and I was waiting with longing for the blessing of Imam Husain (a.s.).
On the eighth of Muharram, a white dove came and sat on the edge of our roof”*
I said: “O God, if this pigeon is a messenger from Imam Husain (a.s.), let it come near my bed.” Suddenly the pigeon came and went under my bed.
An hour later my mother arrived, holding a handkerchief in her hand. She said: “My son, this handkerchief is soaked with the tears shed for Imam Husain (a.s.),” and she wiped my chest with it.
I could not speak, so I gestured to my mother to show her that I had a guest. She went away and brought water and grain for the pigeon, but the pigeon did not eat anything.
On the night of the 16th of Muharram 1376 AH, I was deeply heartbroken and said: “My master, Ashura has passed and I have received no attention.” I closed my eyes, and suddenly in a waking vision I saw:
The ceiling of the room split open, and a grand personality, entirely radiant with light, appeared. He came down and sat on a wooden chair next to my bed.
With great difficulty, I managed to rise from where I lay, took hold of his arm with one hand, and placed my other hand on his shoulder, repeatedly saying: “How wonderful, gazing upon your face is an act of worship,” and he smiled at me.
I asked him: “Who are you?” He replied: “Who have you been calling upon?” I said: “I have been calling upon Imam Husain (a.s.).” He said: “I am Imam Husain (a.s.). What do you wish from me?”
I said: “You know what I wish.”
At that moment the ceiling of the room split open again, and two severed hands were brought on a dish in front of Imam Husain (a.s.).
He said: “What you wanted, we have given you.” Then he said: “Stand up, let’s go.”
He took my hand, and in that vision, we went to Khwaja Khizr Mosque in Kerman. The mosque was full of people, all of them luminous. When the Imam entered, everyone stood up out of respect for him.
Suddenly I came out of that state and found myself back in my room. The air was filled with the scent of perfume and rosewater. The pigeon also came out from under the bed, cooing.
I touched my stomach and saw that the swelling had gone, and I was completely healthy.
The door to my room had been shut from the outside. I knocked, my mother came, opened the door, hugged me and said: “What is going on here? Where is this fragrance of perfume and rosewater coming from?”
I replied: “Imam Husain (a.s.) has healed me.”
I went out into the courtyard of the house and, for the first time in four years, felt that I was free. I went to the bathroom and passed a large amount of pus and blood, after which my body was completely at ease.
In the morning, those who had come to visit me — and perhaps to participate in my funeral — saw that I was completely healthy. At noon I went to Kerman’s Jame Mosque and joined the congregational prayer led by the late Ayatollah Salehi.
One of the people sitting next to me said: “This young man looks just like Hajj Mashallah Najjar.” Another said: “Poor Hajj Mashallah is dying on his deathbed.”
I said: “I am Hajj Mashallah; Imam Husain (a.s.) has healed me.”
People gathered around, wanting to tear pieces from my clothes for blessings, but Ayatollah Salehi prevented them.
Dr. Vakili, who had treated me for four years, heard the news and took me to the hospital for a complete check-up. All the doctors were astonished, and Dr. Herman told Dr. Vakili:
“What medicine did you prescribe for this patient? Tell me so I can use it in similar cases.”
Dr. Vakili, who was a Seyed, said: “I have an ancestor named Imam Husain (a.s.), and it was my ancestor who healed him.”
The doctors and nurses, who had seen my condition during two six-month hospitalizations, began to cry.
Dr. Herman, after reviewing my test results, said: “This gentleman is healthier than a newborn child.”
One year later, on the night of Tasua, he saw Imam Husain (a.s.) in a dream, who instructed him to organize a mourning gathering. From then until now, for more than half a century, a mourning assembly has been held at Hajj Mashallah’s house, which has become famous as both a mourning house and a house of healing. Many people have received healing there: a young Zoroastrian regained health, several women who had been childless for years had children after seeking intercession there.
The room in which Hajj Mashallah was healed remains unchanged, and the wooden chair on which Imam Husain (a.s.) sat is still in the same spot.
Everyone in Kerman knows the story of his healing. My scholarly friend, Mr. Qazizadeh, has recorded a detailed account of his cure in a book called Key to Happiness, narrating it from Hajj Mashallah himself. He has also quoted poems of the committed poet Mr. Sazgar, and then verses by Gholamreza Captain Dilami, known by the pen name “Toofan,” who turned Hajj Mashallah’s story into 180 verses of poetry.
At the end, the handwritten note of Ayatollah Sheikh Abbas Sheikh al-Raees is cited. In 1335 SH, while speaking for ten nights at the home of Dr. Ali Akbar Vakili, he personally witnessed Hajj Mashallah being brought there for healing. Dr. Vakili had told him:
“This is Mr. Mashallah Khodadadpour whose kidneys have failed and is on the verge of certain death.”
Later, when they saw him cured, it was simply unbelievable.
Since then, Hajj Mashallah has made more than one hundred pulpits (minbars), sending them to various cities inside and outside Iran, so that the remembrance of Imam Sayyid al-Shuhada (a.s.) may be recited from them.
