99-/724 _14- Ishaq ibn ‘Ammar reported: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “This is when Allah takes something from him, and he is patient and says, ‘We belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.’”
99-/725 _15- And from al-Sadiq (peace be upon him): “Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘And give good news to the patient,’ meaning with Paradise and forgiveness.” [Qur’an 2:155, M. H. Shakir: “And certainly We will try you with something of fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits; and give good news to the patient.”]
Qur’an 2:158 (M. H. Shakir): Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah; so whoever makes a pilgrimage to the House or pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both; and whoever does good spontaneously, then surely Allah is Grateful, Knowing.

99-/726 _1- Ibn Babawayh said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) told me, he said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdillah narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Muhammad ibn Sinan, from Isma‘il ibn Jabir and ‘Abd al-Karim ibn ‘Amr, from ‘Abd al-Hamid ibn Abi al-Daylam, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Safa was named Safa because the chosen one, Adam (peace be upon him), descended upon it, so the mountain’s name was taken from the name of Adam. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, says: ‘Surely Allah chose Adam and Nuh and the descendants of Ibrahim and the descendants of Imran above the nations’ [Qur’an 3:33, M. H. Shakir]. And Hawwa’ descended upon Marwa, and it was named Marwa because the woman (al-mar’ah) descended upon it, so the mountain’s name was taken from the name of the woman.”

99-/727 _2- And from him, he said: My father (may Allah be pleased with him) told me, he said: Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdillah narrated to us, from Ya‘qub ibn Yazid, from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from Mu‘awiyah ibn ‘Ammar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) left Isma‘il (peace be upon him) in Mecca, the child became thirsty, and there were trees between Safa and Marwa. His mother went out until she stood on Safa and said, ‘Is there anyone in the valley?’ But no one answered her. She went on until she reached Marwa and said, ‘Is there anyone in the valley?’ But no one answered her. Then she returned to Safa and said the same, until she had done that seven times, and Allah made that a practice. Then Gabriel came to her and said, ‘Who are you?’ She said, ‘I am the mother of Ibrahim’s child.’ He said to her, ‘To whom has he entrusted you?’ She said, ‘Since you ask that, I did say to him when he wished to go, “O Ibrahim, to whom do you entrust us?” He said, “To Allah, Mighty and Majestic.”’ So Gabriel said, ‘Indeed he has entrusted you to One who suffices.’
“He said: People used to avoid passing through Mecca because of the water. The child scraped the ground with his foot and Zamzam gushed forth. She returned from Marwa to the child and the water had already sprung up, so she began gathering soil around it, fearing the water would flow away; and had she left it, it would have been a flowing stream.
“He said: When the birds saw it, they circled over it. A caravan from Yemen passed by, and when they saw the birds circling over it, they said, ‘They only circle over water.’ They came to them to ask for water, so they gave them to drink from the water, and the caravan fed them with food. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, made that a provision for them. Caravans would pass by Mecca and feed them food and give them water to drink.”

99-/728 _3- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from several of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Mu‘awiyah ibn Hukaym, from Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali the money-changer, from one of our companions, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked about the sa‘y between Safa and Marwa: is it obligatory or a sunnah? He said: “Obligatory.” I said: Has not Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: “there is no blame on him if he goes round them both”? He said: “That was in the ‘Umrat al-Qada. The Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) had stipulated with them that they remove the idols from Safa and Marwa. A man got preoccupied and left the sa‘y until the days had passed and the idols were put back. They came to him and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, so-and-so did not perform the sa‘y between Safa and Marwa, and the idols have been put back.’ So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: ‘there is no blame on him if he goes round them both’ [that is, even with the idols upon them].” [Qur’an 2:158, M. The Muslims had thought that the sa‘y between Safa and Marwa was something the polytheists did, so Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah ... there is no blame on him if he goes round them both.”’” [Qur’an 2:158, M. 99-/731 _6- And ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said in his Tafsir: Quraysh had placed their idols between Safa and Marwa, and when they performed the walk they would rub themselves against them. When what happened with the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) occurred at the expedition of Hudaybiyyah, and they barred him from the House, they stipulated for him that they would leave the House free for him in the following year so that he might complete his ‘umrah for three days, then he would depart. When the ‘Umrat al-Qada took place in the seventh year of the Hijrah, he entered Mecca and said to Quraysh, “Remove your idols from between Safa and Marwa so I may perform the walk.” So they removed them, and the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) performed the walk between Safa and Marwa after the idols had been removed. One of the Muslims among the companions of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) had not performed the walk. When the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) finished the circumambulation, Quraysh returned the idols between Safa and Marwa. The man who had not performed the walk came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) and said, “Quraysh has returned the idols between Safa and Marwa, and I have not performed the walk.” So Allah, Mighty and Majestic, sent down: “Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah; so whoever makes a pilgrimage to the House or pays a visit (to it), there is no blame on him if he goes round them both,” even if the idols are upon them. He said: “It is like His saying: ‘Then We gave the Book for an inheritance to those whom We chose from among Our servants’—so whoever among the people enters into them is like them. Allah says: ‘And whoever obeys Allah and the Messenger, these are with those upon whom Allah has bestowed favors from among the prophets and the truthful and the martyrs and the righteous, and a goodly company are they!’” [Qur’an 35:32; Qur’an 4:69, both M. 99-/734 _9- From one of our companions, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I asked him about the sa‘y between Safa and Marwa: is it obligatory or a sunnah? He said: “Obligatory.” He said: I said: Does not Allah say, “there is no blame on him if he goes round them both”? He said: “That was in the ‘Umrat al-Qada, and that is because the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) had stipulated with them that they remove the idols. A man among his companions became preoccupied until the idols were put back. [They came to the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family) and asked him, and it was said to him: ‘So-and-so did not perform the circumambulation, and the idols have been put back.’] Then Allah revealed: ‘Surely the Safa and the Marwa are among the signs appointed by Allah ... there is no blame on him if he goes round them both,’ that is, even with the idols upon them.” [Qur’an 2:158, M. H. Shakir]
99-/735 _10- From Ibn Muskan, from al-Halabi, who said: I asked him, saying: Why was the sa‘y between Safa and Marwa prescribed? He said: “Indeed Iblis appeared to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in the valley, so Ibrahim (peace be upon him) hurried away from him, disliking to speak to him; and it was a haunt of the devils.”
99-/736 _11- And he said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said, in the report of Hammad ibn ‘Uthman: “There were idols upon Safa and Marwa. When people performed Hajj, they did not know how to act, so Allah sent down this verse. The people performed the walk while the idols remained as they were; and when the Prophet (Allah bless him and his family) performed Hajj, he cast them down.” [Qur’an 2:158, M. H. Shakir]

99-/739 _3- From Zayd al-Shahham, who said: Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked about the punishment of the grave, and he said: “Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) told us that a man came to Salman al-Farisi and said, ‘Narrate to me.’ He remained silent from him; then he returned and he remained silent. The man turned away while reciting this verse: ‘Surely those who conceal the clear proofs and the guidance after We made it clear for men in the Book.’ Salman said to him, ‘Come back. If we had found someone trustworthy, we would have told him—but prepare for Munkar and Nakir, when they come to you in the grave and ask you about the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him and his family). If you doubt or prevaricate, they will strike your head with a hammer they have, from which you become ashes.’ I said: Then what? He said: ‘He returns, then he is punished.’ I said: Who are Munkar and Nakir? He said: ‘They are the two who sit in the grave.’ I said: Are they two angels who punish people in their graves? He said: ‘Yes.’” [Qur’an 2:159, M. H. Shakir]
