(al-Ra‘d 13:20-21) M. H. Shakir: Those who fulfil the promise of Allah and do not break the covenant, and those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined and have awe of their Lord and fear the evil reckoning.

You are the people of understanding in the Book of Allah. Allah said: Only those endowed with understanding take admonition.

99-/5522: From Abu al-‘Abbas, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: An hour’s reflection is better than a year’s worship. Allah said: Only those endowed with understanding take admonition.

Abi Hamzah, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: I heard him say: Verily the womb-tie (rahim) is suspended from the Throne, saying: O Allah, maintain ties with whoever maintains me, and cut off whoever cuts me off. It is the womb-tie of the Family of Muhammad, and it is Allah’s saying: And those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined; and [it is also] the tie of every kinsman’s kinship.

99-/5524: And from him: from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, from ‘Ali b. al-Hakam, from Safwan the camel-driver, who said: Words passed between Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) and ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan until a commotion arose among them and people gathered, and they separated that evening over it. In the morning I went out on some errand, and I found Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) at the door of ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan, saying: O girl, tell Abu Muhammad to come out. He came out and said: O Abu ‘Abdillah, what brought you so early? He said: I recited a verse from the Book of Allah last night, and it disturbed me. He said: What is it? He said: The saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is His remembrance: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined, and have awe of their Lord, and fear the evil reckoning. He said: You have spoken the truth. It is as if I had never read this verse from the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, at all. Then they embraced and wept.

He said: It was revealed about the womb-tie of the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them), and it can also apply to your kin. Then he said: So do not be among those who say that a thing is limited to only one case. [1]

99-/5527: And from him: from Muhammad b. Yahya, from Ahmad b. Muhammad, from ‘Uthman b. ‘Isa, from Sama‘ah b. 99-/5528: And from him: from al-Husayn b. Muhammad, from Mu‘alla b. Muhammad, from al-Hasan b. ‘Ali, from Hammad b. ‘Uthman, who said: A man entered upon Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) and complained to him about a man among his companions. Soon the one complained of arrived. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to him: Why is so-and-so complaining about you? He said: They complain that I exacted my due from him. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) sat down angrily and said: Is it as if, when you exact your right, you do no wrong?! Have you seen what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, related in His Book: They fear the evil reckoning? Do you think they feared that Allah would be unjust toward them? No, by Allah, they only feared exacting to the utmost; so Allah, Mighty and Majestic, named it “the evil reckoning.” Whoever exacts to the utmost has done ill.

99-/5529: ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: My father related to me from Muhammad b. al-Fudayl, from Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him), who said: The womb-tie of the Family of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his Family) is suspended from the Throne, saying: O Allah, maintain ties with whoever maintains me and cut off whoever cuts me off; and it applies in every kinship-tie. This verse was revealed about the Family of Muhammad and what they were pledged to, and the covenant taken from them in the pre-existent state regarding the loyalty (wilayah) of the Commander of the Faithful and the Imams (peace be upon them) after him; and it is His saying: Those who fulfil the promise of Allah and do not break the covenant. Then He mentioned their enemies and said: And those who break the covenant of Allah after its confirmation [13:25], meaning concerning the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him), the one about whom Allah took [a covenant] in the pre-existent state and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) took [a covenant] from them at Ghadir Khumm. Then He said: Upon them is the curse, and they shall have the evil abode [13:25].

Yahya, from Hammad b. ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) that he said to a man: O so-and-so, what is between you and your brother? He said: May I be your ransom, I had something against him, so I was exacting in my due. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Tell me about Allah’s saying: And they fear the evil reckoning—do you think they feared that He would be biased against them or wrong them? No; rather, they feared exacting to the utmost and minute over-scrutiny. [2]

99-/5536: From Safwan b. Mihran al-Jammal, who said: Words passed between ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan and Abu ‘Abdillah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) until their voices were raised and people gathered; then they separated that evening. When morning came I went out on my errand, and there was Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) at the door of ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan, saying: Tell Abu Muhammad: Abu ‘Abdillah is at the door. ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan came out, saying: O Abu ‘Abdillah, what brought you so early? He said: I recited a verse from the Book of Allah last night, and it disturbed me. He said: What is it? He said: His saying, Mighty and Majestic: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined and have awe of their Lord and fear the evil reckoning. Then they embraced and both wept, and ‘Abdullah b. al-Hasan said: You have spoken truly, by Allah, O Abu ‘Abdillah. It is as if this verse had never passed me at all.

99-/5537: Al-Fadl b. Shadhan wrote to us, from Abu ‘Abdillah. He said: Ibrahim b. ‘Abd al-Hamid related to us, from Salimah—the freedwoman of a concubine who belonged to Abu ‘Abdillah—she said: I was with Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) when death came to him; he fainted, then when he revived he said: Give al-Hasan b. ‘Ali b. al-Husayn—the Afṭas—seventy dinars. I said: Will you give to a man who attacked you with a large knife? He said: Woe to you! Do you not recite the Qur’an? She said: Yes. He said: Have you not heard Allah’s saying: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined and have awe of their Lord and fear the evil reckoning? And he said: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined—that is, maintaining ties with the Imam.

99-/5538: From al-Hasan b. Musa, who said: Our companions narrated that Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) was asked about the Exalted’s saying: And those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined. He said: It is maintaining ties with the Imam every year, whether little or much. Then Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: I desire nothing by that except your purification.

99-/5539: From Sama‘ah, who said: I asked him about Allah’s saying: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined. He said: It is what Allah has made obligatory in wealth apart from the zakat; and whoever pays what Allah has made obligatory upon him has discharged what is due from him.

99-/5540: From Sama‘ah, who said: Allah has ordained for the poor a due from the wealth of the rich, for the payment of which they are not praised—and that is the zakat; by it their blood is spared and by it they are named Muslims. But Allah has ordained in wealth rights other than zakat; and among what Allah has ordained in wealth besides zakat is His saying: Those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined. Whoever pays what Allah has made obligatory upon him has discharged what is due from him and has rendered thanks for what Allah has bestowed upon him of his wealth, when he praises Him for what He has bestowed upon him, in that He has favored him with abundance over others and enabled him to fulfill what Allah has made obligatory and assisted him in it.

99-/5541: From Abu Ishaq, who said: I heard him say about the evil reckoning: Their good deeds will not be accepted, and they will be taken to task for their evil deeds.

99-/5542: From Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: They fear the evil reckoning. He said: The evil deeds are counted against them, and the good deeds are not counted for them—that is exacting to the utmost.

99-/5543: From Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), regarding His saying: And they fear the evil reckoning. He said: Exacting to the utmost and minute over-scrutiny; and he said: The evil deeds are counted against them, and the good deeds are not counted for them.

99-/5544: From Hammad b. ‘Uthman, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), that he said to a man: O so-and-so, what is between you and your brother? He said: May I be your ransom, I had a right against him and I exacted my right from him. Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: Tell me about Allah’s saying: And they fear the evil reckoning—do you think they feared that He would be biased against them or wrong them? No, by Allah; they feared exacting to the utmost and minute over-scrutiny.

99-/5545: Muhammad b. ‘Isa said: And with this chain: that Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said to a man about whom one of his brothers complained: What is it that your brother so-and-so complains about you? He said: Does he complain about me if I exacted my right? He sat down angrily and said: Is it as if, when you exact to the utmost, you do no wrong?! Have you observed what Allah, Blessed and Exalted, has related: And they fear the evil reckoning—did they fear that Allah would be biased against them? No, by Allah; they feared nothing but exacting to the utmost; so Allah, Mighty and Majestic, named it “the evil reckoning.” Whoever exacts to the utmost has done ill.

99-/5546: From al-Husayn b. ‘Uthman, from one he mentioned, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: Maintaining ties of kinship purifies deeds, increases wealth, makes the reckoning easier, repels affliction, and increases lifespan.

99-/5547: Ibn Shahrashub: from Muhammad b. al-Fudayl, from Musa b. Ja‘far (peace be upon them both), regarding His Exalted saying: And those who join that which Allah has bidden to be joined—he said: It is the womb-tie of the Family of Muhammad (peace be upon them).

99-/5548: Al-Tabrisi: from Hisham b. Salim, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The evil reckoning is that the evil deeds are counted against them and the good deeds are not counted for them; and that is exacting to the utmost.

(al-Ra‘d 13:22) M. H. Shakir: And those who are patient, seeking the pleasure of their Lord, and keep up prayer, and spend out of what We have given them secretly and openly and repel evil with good, those it is for whom is the (happy) issue of the abode,

99-/5549: ‘Ali b. Ibrahim: And they repel evil with good—that is, they ward it off.

99-/5550: And from him, he said: My father related to me, from Hammad, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said to ‘Ali (peace be upon him): O ‘Ali, there is no household in which there is joy except that sorrow follows it; and there is no grief except that it has relief—except the grief of the people of the Fire. So if you do an evil deed, follow it up with a good deed that quickly effaces it. And be devoted to deeds of kindness, for they repel the calamities of evil ends. The Messenger (may Allah bless him and his Family) only said this to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) by way of disciplining people, not because the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) had evil deeds that he committed.

99-/5551: And from him, he said: My father related to me, from al-Nadr b. Suwayd, from Muhammad b. Qays, from Abu Sayyar, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) came one day, placing his hand on the shoulder of al-‘Abbas. The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) met him, so the Messenger of Allah embraced him and kissed the space between his eyes. Then al-‘Abbas greeted ‘Ali (peace be upon him), and he returned his greeting with a light response, so al-‘Abbas became angry and said: O Messenger of Allah, ‘Ali never leaves off his pride. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his Family) said: O ‘Abbas, do not say that about ‘Ali, for I just met Gabriel, and he said to me: The two angels entrusted with ‘Ali met me just now and said: We have not recorded against him a sin from the day he was born until this day.
