Translation: Ibn Tāwūs in al-Duru‘ al-Wāqiya said: Abu Ja‘far Ahmad al-Qummī mentioned in the book Zuhd al-Nabī (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): Gabriel (peace be upon him) came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) at noon, at an hour when he did not usually come to him, and his color was changed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to hear his movement and his soft ringing [1], but did not hear it that day. The Prophet said to him: O Gabriel, what is with you that you have come to me at an hour you have not come before, and I see your color changed, and I was accustomed to hearing your movement and your ringing but did not hear it! He said: I have come at the time when Allah commanded the bellows of the Fire and they have been set upon it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: Tell me about the Fire, O my brother Gabriel—when the Exalted Allah created it? He said: Glorified is He, He kindled it for a thousand years until it turned red; then He kindled it for a thousand years until it turned white; then He kindled it for a thousand years until it turned black; so it is black and dark, its coals do not give light, and its flame does not die out. By Him Who sent you with the truth as a Prophet, if the size of a needle’s eye were to come forth from it upon the people of the earth, they would all be burned to the last one. And if a man were cast into Hell and then brought out of it, the people of the earth would all perish when they looked at him because of what they would see upon him. And if a forearm’s length of the chain which Allah mentioned in His Book were placed upon all the mountains of the world, they would melt away to the last of them. And if one of the nineteen keepers of Hell were to be looked upon by the people of the earth, they would die as soon as they looked at him. And if a garment from the garments of the people of Hell were brought out [2] to the earth, the people of the earth would die from the stench of its odor. Thereupon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) bent down, lowered his head, and wept, and likewise Gabriel; and they continued weeping until an angel called to them from the heaven: O Gabriel, and O Muhammad, indeed Allah has made you both secure from disobeying so that He would punish you.
Translation: Then Ibn Tāwūs said in the aforementioned book also: From the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) that he said: By Him in Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, if a single drop of zaqqūm were to drip upon the mountains of the earth, they would sink down to the bottom of the seven earths, and they would not be able to bear it—so how is it with one for whom it is food! And by Him in Whose hand is my soul, if a single drop of ghislīn were to drip upon the mountains of the earth, they would sink down to the bottom of the seven earths, and they would not be able to bear it—so how is it with one for whom it is drink! And by Him in Whose hand is my soul, if a single mace of those which Allah has mentioned in His Book were placed upon the mountains of the earth, they would sink down to the bottom of the seven earths, and they would not be able to bear it—so how is it with one who will be struck with it on the Day of Resurrection in the Fire!

Translation: ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: My father related to me, from Ibn Abī ‘Umayr, from Abū Basīr. He said: I said to Abū ‘Abdillāh (peace be upon him): May I be your ransom, O son of the Messenger of Allah, make me long [for it]. He said: O Abā Muhammad, of the very least breeze [1] of Paradise is that its fragrance will be perceived upon the hearts of its people on the Day of choking grief and strangulation, from a distance of a thousand years by the measure of the people of the world. And the lowest of the people of Paradise in station—if the people of the two weighty ones, jinn and humans, were to alight with him, it would suffice them in food and drink, and nothing of what he has would be diminished. And the most modest of the people of Paradise in station—when he enters [2] Paradise, three gardens are raised up for him. When he enters the nearest of them, he sees in it of spouses, servants, rivers, and fruits whatever Allah wills—what fills his eyes with coolness and his heart with joy. Then when he thanks Allah and praises Him [3], it is said to him: Raise your head toward the second garden, for in it is what is not in the other. He says: My Lord, grant me this! Allah, Exalted, says: If I give it to you, you will ask Me for another. He says: My Lord, this one, this one! When he enters it, he thanks Allah and praises Him. He said: Then it is said: Open for him a gate to Paradise; and it is said to him: Raise your head. Then a gate to eternity is opened for him, and he sees multiples of what he was in before. So at the multiplication [4] of his delights he says: My Lord, to You belongs praise that cannot be counted, since You have favored me with the gardens and saved me from the fires. Abū Basīr said: I wept and said to him: May I be your ransom, increase me! He said: O Abā Muhammad, in Paradise there is a river with maidens growing upon its banks; when the believer passes by a maiden who pleases him, he plucks her, and Allah causes another to grow in her place. I said: May I be your ransom, increase me. He said: The believer will be married to eight hundred virgins, four thousand previously married women, and two spouses from the wide-eyed ḥūr. I said: May I be your ransom—eight hundred virgins! He said: Yes; he will not lie with any of them except that he finds her as such. I said: May I be your ransom, from what were the wide-eyed ḥūr created? He said: From the luminous soil of Paradise; the marrow of her shins is seen from behind seventy robes; her liver is his mirror, and his liver is her mirror. I said: May I be your ransom, do they have speech by which they speak to the people of Paradise? He said: Yes, speech with which they speak—creation has never heard the like of it, nor anything sweeter. I said: What is it? He said: They say in melodious voices: We are the everlasting, and we do not die; we are the blissful, and we do not wither; we are the abiding, and we do not depart; we are the content, and we do not become angry. Glad tidings to him who was created for us, and glad tidings to us who were created for him. We are those such that if one of our diadems were hung in the air of the sky, its light would overwhelm [1] the eyes.
Translation: These two verses—their exegesis [2]—are a refutation of those who denied the creation of Paradise and Hell. And there will come—if Allah, Exalted, wills—regarding the description of Paradise and the wide-eyed ḥūr in His saying: Hā’umu qra’ū kitābiyah [3] and other verses [4]. And some of that has already preceded in His saying: The day We will gather the Godwary to the All-Merciful as a delegation, from Sūrat Maryam [5].
