99-/12053 Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: From Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Ibn Mahbub, from al-‘Ala’ ibn Razin, from Muhammad ibn Muslim, who said: Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “Indeed, a man may commit a single impulsive act and become a disbeliever. And surely, envy consumes faith just as fire consumes wood.”

99-/12054 And from him: From Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from Muhammad ibn Khalid and al-Husayn ibn Sa‘id, from al-Nadr ibn Suwayd, from al-Qasim ibn Sulayman, from Jarrah al-Mada’ini, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him), who said: “Indeed, envy consumes faith just as fire consumes wood.”

99-/12055 And from him: From a group of our companions, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Khalid, from Ibn Mahbub, from Dawud al-Raqqi, who said: I heard Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) say: “Fear Allah, and do not envy one another. Verily, among the religious practices of Jesus son of Mary was journeying through the lands. On one of his journeys, a short man—one of his companions who often kept close to him—accompanied him.

When Jesus reached the sea, he said: In the name of Allah, with firm certainty in Him, and he walked upon the surface of the water. The short man, upon seeing Jesus (peace be upon him) walking ahead of him, said: In the name of Allah, with firm certainty in Him, and he too walked upon the surface of the water and caught up with Jesus (peace be upon him).

Then pride entered his heart, and he said: ‘This is Jesus, the Spirit of Allah, walking on water, and I also walk on water—so what virtue does he have over me?’ He was then submerged in the water and cried out for help to Jesus son of Mary (peace be upon him), so Jesus reached into the water and pulled him out.

He then said to him: ‘What did you say, O short one?’ He replied: ‘I said: This is the Spirit of Allah walking on water, and I also walk on water! So pride entered me because of that.’

Jesus said to him: ‘You placed yourself in a station other than the one Allah had placed you in, so Allah despised you for what you said. So repent to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, from what you said.’

The man repented and returned to the station in which Allah had placed him. So fear Allah, and do not envy one another.”

99-/12056

And from him: From Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Nawfali, from al-Sakuni, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Poverty is near to disbelief, and envy is close to overcoming fate."

99-/12057

And from him: From Ali ibn Ibrahim, from Muhammad ibn Isa, from Yunus, from Muawiyah ibn Wahb, who said: Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him) said: "The calamity of religion is envy, arrogance, and pride."

99-/12058

And from him: From Yunus, from Dawood al-Raqi, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him and his family) said: Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, said to Musa ibn Imran: 'O son of Imran, do not envy people for what I have granted them of My favor, and do not cast your eyes towards it, nor follow your own desires. For indeed, the envious one is displeased with My blessings, and he obstructs the portion I have apportioned among My servants. Whoever acts like this, then he is not from Me, and I am not from him.'"

99-/12059

And from him: From Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from al-Qasim ibn Muhammad, from al-Minqari, from al-Fudayl ibn Iyad, from Abu Abdullah (peace be upon him), who said: "The believer is content and does not envy, while the hypocrite envies and does not feel content."
