Translation: In it you pasture, that is, you sow; and His saying: He causes to grow for you thereby the herbage and the olives and the palms and the grapes and of all the fruits—that is by means of the rain: Most surely there is a sign in this for a people who reflect. Then He said: His saying, the Exalted: And what He has created for you in the earth, meaning He created and brought forth things differing in their colors. Most surely there is a sign in this for a people who are mindful. His saying: And He it is Who has made the sea subservient, that you may eat fresh flesh from it and bring forth out of it ornaments which you wear—meaning what comes out of the sea of various jewels—and you see the ships cleaving through it—meaning the vessels. He said: And His saying: And He has cast in the earth firm mountains lest it should quake with you—meaning the mountains—and rivers, and ways—meaning paths—so that you may be guided, that is, so that you may find guidance.

Translation (Qur’an 16:18, M. H. Shakir): And if you would count Allah’s favors, you will not be able to number them; most surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
99-/5995 - Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from ‘Ali ibn Muhammad, from some of his companions, raised, who said: When ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn (peace be upon them) would recite this verse: And if you would count Allah’s favor, you will not be able to number it, he would say: “Glory be to Him Who has placed in none the knowledge of His favors except the knowledge of shortcoming in knowing them, just as He has placed in none the knowledge of comprehending Him more than the awareness that he cannot comprehend Him. So He, Mighty and Majestic, has accepted as gratitude the knowing of the knowers that they fall short of knowing His thanks; thus He made their knowledge of their shortcoming to be gratitude—just as He knew the knowledge of the learned that they do not comprehend Him, so He made that faith—knowing from Him that it is the utmost measure of the servants and they do not go beyond that. For nothing of His creation reaches the extent of worship due to Him; and how can the extent of worship due to Him be reached by one for whom there is no extent and no how? Exalted is Allah far above that, supremely exalted.”
Translation: And this hadith and others have preceded at His saying, the Exalted: And He gives you of all that you ask Him; and if you would count Allah’s favor, you will not be able to number it, from Surah Ibrahim [2].
Translation (Qur’an 16:20–25, M. H. Shakir):
- And those whom they call on besides Allah have not created anything while they are themselves created. (16:20)
- Dead (are they), not living, and they know not when they shall be raised. (16:21)
- Your God is One God; therefore, (as for) those who do not believe in the hereafter, their hearts are ignorant and they are proud. (16:22)
- Truly Allah knows what they hide and what they manifest; surely He does not love the proud. (16:23)
- And when it is said to them: What is it that your Lord has revealed? they say: Stories of the ancients. (16:24)
- That they may bear their burdens entirely on the day of resurrection and also of the burdens of those whom they lead astray without knowledge; now surely evil is what they bear. (16:25)
99-/5996 - ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim: This is a refutation of the idol-worshippers. He said: And His saying: And when it is said to them: What is it that your Lord has revealed?—about ‘Ali—they say: Stories of the ancients, meaning the falsehoods of the ancients.
