Hud Ayah 18-21

Translation: Ibn al-Maghāzilī al-Shāfi‘ī: He raises it to ‘Abbād b. ‘Abd Allāh, who said: I heard ‘Alī (peace be upon him) say: “No verse has been revealed from the Book of God, Mighty and Majestic, except that I know when it was revealed and about whom it was revealed; and there is not a man from Quraysh except that a verse from the Book of God, Mighty and Majestic, was revealed about him, leading him either to Paradise or to Fire.” A man stood up and said: O Commander of the Faithful, then what was revealed about you? He said: “Had you not asked me before witnesses, I would not have told you. Do you not recite: ‘Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from Him follows him?’ The Messenger of God (God bless him and his family) has with him a clear proof from his Lord, and I am the witness from him.”

Qur’an (Hūd 11:17):

M. H. Shakir: Is he then who has with him clear proof from his Lord, and a witness from Him follows him?

Translation: And in (Kitāb al-Hibrī) something similar [1], and in (Rumūz al-Kunūz) by al-Ras‘anī, something similar [2].

Translation: Muḥammad b. Ya‘qūb, with his chain from Jābir b. Yazīd, from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him), from the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him)—in a sermon of his—said: “He said in the decisive part of His Book: ‘Whoever obeys the Messenger indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back—We have not sent you as a keeper over them’ [3]. So He paired obedience to him with obedience to Himself, and disobedience to him with disobedience to Himself. That was proof of what was delegated to him and a testimony for him over whoever followed him and disobeyed him. And He clarified that in more than one place in the Mighty Book. Exalted is He, He said, urging people to follow him and encouraging belief in him and acceptance of his call: ‘Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins’ [4]. So following him (God bless him and his family) is God’s love, and His good pleasure is the forgiveness of sins, the perfection of success, and the obligation of the Garden; while turning away from him and rejecting him is opposing God, and [incurs] His anger and wrath. And distance from him is dwelling in the Fire, and that is His saying, exalted is He: ‘And whoever of the parties disbelieves in him—the Fire is his promised place,’ meaning denial of him and disobedience to him.”

Qur’an (al-Nisā’ 4:80):

M. H. Shakir: Whoever obeys the Messenger, he indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back, so We have not sent you as a keeper over them.

Qur’an (Āl ‘Imrān 3:31):

M. H. Shakir: Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your faults.

Qur’an (Hūd 11:17):

M. H. Shakir: and whoever of the parties disbelieves in it, the Fire is his promised place.

Translation: And a ḥadīth has already passed on the meaning of the verse, from al-‘Ayyāshī, from Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, exalted is He: “Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you” — let it be sought there [5].

Qur’an (Hūd 11:12):

M. H. Shakir: Then maybe you will give up part of what is revealed to you.

Translation: His saying, exalted is He:

Qur’an (Hūd 11:18):

M. H. Shakir: And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah? These shall be brought before their Lord.

Translation: Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Abū ‘Ubaydah, who said: I asked Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) about His saying:

Translation: “And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah? These shall be brought before their Lord … up to His saying: ‘seeking to make it crooked’ [1].”

Qur’an (Hūd 11:18–19):

M. H. Shakir: And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah? These shall be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses shall say: These are they who lied against their Lord. Now surely the curse of Allah is on the unjust, who turn away from the way of Allah and desire to make it crooked…

Translation: He said: “That is, they seek for the path of God deviation away from straightness; they distort it by (false) interpretation and describe it as deviating from truth and correctness.”

Translation: And from the Prophet (God bless him and his family) in a report: “Indeed God, exalted is He, has made five things obligatory upon the creation; they took four and left one. They asked about the four; he said: Prayer, alms, pilgrimage, and fasting.” They said: So what is the one they left? He said: “The walāyah of ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib.” They said: Is it obligatory from God, exalted is He? He said: “Yes. God said: ‘And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah…’” the verses.

Qur’an (Hūd 11:18–20):

M. H. Shakir: And who is more unjust than he who forges a lie against Allah? These shall be brought before their Lord, and the witnesses shall say: These are they who lied against their Lord. Now surely the curse of Allah is on the unjust, who turn away from the way of Allah and desire to make it crooked; and they are disbelievers in the hereafter. These shall not escape in the earth, nor shall they have any guardians besides Allah; the punishment shall be doubled for them. They could not bear to hear, and they did not see.

Translation: His saying, exalted is He:

Qur’an (Hūd 11:18–21): …

M. H. Shakir: … and the witnesses shall say: These are they who lied against their Lord. These shall not escape in the earth, nor shall they have any guardians besides Allah; the punishment shall be doubled for them. They could not bear to hear, and they did not see. These are they who have lost their souls, and what they forged has gone away from them.

Translation: Al-‘Ayyāshī: From Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) regarding His saying, exalted is He: “And the witnesses shall say.” He said: “They are the Imāms (peace be upon them): ‘These are they who lied against their Lord.’”

Translation: ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm, on the meaning of the verse: He means by “the witnesses” the Imāms (peace be upon them). “Now surely the curse of Allah is on the unjust”—those who wrong the family of Muḥammad (God bless him and his family) in their right. Then he said: And His saying: “Those who turn away from the way of Allah and desire to make it crooked” means they turn away from the path of God—and it is the Imāmate—“and desire to make it crooked,” meaning they diverted it to other than its [rightful place]. Then he said: And His saying: “They could not bear to hear” means: they could not bear to hear the mention of the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him). Then he said: And His saying: “These are they who have lost their souls, and what they forged has gone away from them,” that is, on the Day of Resurrection, what they claimed besides the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) is null and gone.

Translation: His saying, exalted is He:

Qur’an (Hūd 11:23):

M. H. Shakir: Surely (as for) those who believe and do good and humble themselves to their Lord, these are the dwellers of the garden, in it they will abide.

Translation: ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said: And His saying, exalted is He: “Surely those who believe and do good and humble themselves to their Lord”—that is, they showed humility to God and worshipped Him.

M. H. Shakir: The likeness of the two parties is as the blind and the deaf and the seeing and the hearing; are they equal in condition?
