Hud Ayah 103
- Be patient, for surely relief only comes at the point of despair; indeed, those before you were more patient than you.
- And from him: from ‘Ali b. ‘Abd Allah al-Warraq, and Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sinani, and ‘Ali b. Ahmad b. Muhammad (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: Abu al-‘Abbas Ahmad b. Yahya b. Zakariyya al-Qattan narrated to us, who said: Bakr b. ‘Abd Allah b. Habib narrated to us, who said: Tamim b. Buhlul narrated to us, from his father, from Ja‘far b. Sulayman al-Basri, from ‘Abd Allah b. al-Fadl al-Hashimi, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abd Allah Ja‘far b. Muhammad (peace be upon him). I said: Regarding His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And my success is not but with Allah,” and His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; but if He forsakes you, who is there then that can help you after Him?” [1].
He said: “When a servant does what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has commanded of obedience, his action accords with the command of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and by it the servant is called ‘granted success’ (muwafaq). And when the servant intends to enter into something of Allah’s disobedience, and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, interposes between him and that sin so he leaves it, then his leaving it is by the success (tawfiq) of Allah, Exalted is His remembrance. But whenever He leaves him to that sin and does not interpose between him and it until he commits it [2], then He has forsaken him, not helped him, and not granted him success.”
- And ‘Ali b. Ibrahim said: Then the Mighty and Majestic mentioned the story of Moses (peace be upon him), saying: “And certainly We sent Moses with Our signs and a clear authority,” up to His saying: “And they were followed in this world by a curse”—meaning destruction and drowning—“and on the Day of Resurrection; evil is the gift which shall be given.” That is, Allah supplies them with punishment. Then He said to His Prophet (blessings of Allah be upon him and his family): “That is of the tidings of the towns”—that is, their reports—“We relate it to you, O Muhammad: among them are standing and reaped,” up to His saying: “And they did not increase them in aught but loss,” meaning nothing but impoverishment.
- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him): He recited “fa-minhā qā’iman wa ḥaṣīdan” with the accusatives, then said: “O Abu Muhammad, it is not ‘reaped’ except by iron (i.e., by the sword).” And in another narration: “fa-minhā qā’imun wa ḥaṣīdun. Is the reaping accomplished by anything other than iron?”
- Surely in that there is a sign for him who fears the chastisement of the hereafter; that is a day for which people shall be gathered together and that is a day which shall be witnessed. (Qur’an, Hud 11:103, M. H. Shakir)
- ‘Ali b. Ibrahim: That is, the prophets and the messengers will bear witness against them.

Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “And what was said to you?” He replied: “They said: the ‘Witness’ is Friday, and the ‘Witnessed’ is the Day of ‘Arafah.” Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “It is not as was said to you. The ‘Witness’ is the Day of ‘Arafah, and the ‘Witnessed’ is the Day of Resurrection. Do you not read the Qur’an? Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ‘That is a day for which people shall be gathered together and that is a day which shall be witnessed.’”

- Al-‘Ayyashi: from Muhammad b. Muslim, from one of the two (peace be upon them), who said regarding the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: “That is a day for which people shall be gathered together and that is a day which shall be witnessed”: “That is the Day of Resurrection, and it is the Promised Day.”
- On the day when it shall come, no soul shall speak except with His permission, then (some) of them shall be unhappy and (others) happy. So as to those who are unhappy, they shall be in the Fire; for them shall be sighing and groaning in it, Abiding therein so long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord please; surely your Lord is the mighty Doer of what He intends. And as to those who are made happy, they shall be in the garden, abiding therein so long as the heavens and the earth endure, except as your Lord please; a gift which shall never be cut off.
