S 55 Ayat 66 to 72

In both of them are two gushing springs. In both of them are two kinds of every fruit. Reclining on beds, the inner coverings of which are of silk brocade, and the fruits of the two gardens shall be within reach. In them are women limiting (their) glances, untouched before them by man or jinni— As though they were rubies and coral. Is the reward of goodness aught but goodness? Which then of the bounties of your Lord will you deny?

And besides these two are two (other) gardens— Both inclining to blackness. In both of them are two springs gushing forth. In both are fruits and palms and pomegranates. In them are goodly beautiful ones— Fair ones confined in the pavilions—

99-/10358

‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said regarding the verse of Allah, the Exalted: "In both of them are two gushing springs" – he said: they gush forth.

And regarding His saying: "In them are good and beautiful ones" – he said: they are maidens growing along the banks of Kawthar; whenever one is taken, another grows in her place.

And regarding His saying: "Fair ones confined in pavilions" – he said: the eye is restrained from them.

99-/10359

Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub narrated from ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim, from his father, from Ibn Mahbub, from Abu Ayyub, from al-Halabi who said:

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: “In them are good and beautiful ones” – he said: “They are the righteous believing women who possess knowledge.”

He said: I asked him, “Fair ones confined in pavilions?” He said: “The hur are the fair ones, protected and veiled in pavilions of pearls, rubies, and coral. Each pavilion has four doors, and at each door are seventy full-breasted attendants (ka‘ib) who serve them. Every day, they receive a blessing from Allah, Mighty and Glorious is He, and Allah, Exalted is His remembrance, gives glad tidings of them to the believer.”

99-/10360

And from him, from Muhammad ibn Yahya, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Husayn ibn Yazid al-Nawfali, from al-Husayn ibn A‘yan, the brother of Malik ibn A‘yan, who said:

I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) about a man saying to another: “May Allah reward you with good (Jazāk Allāhu khayran),” what is meant by it?

Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) said: “Verily, Khayr (Good) is a river in Paradise, its source flows from al-Kawthar, and al-Kawthar flows from the base of the Throne (Sāq al-‘Arsh). Upon its banks are the dwellings of the vicegerents (awṣiyā’) and their followers. On the banks of that river are maidens growing like plants – whenever one is picked, another grows in its place. The river was named after that.”

And that is the saying of the Most High: “In them are good and beautiful ones” (Surat ar-Rahman, 55:70). So when a man says to his companion: “May Allah reward you with good (Jazāk Allāhu khayran),” he is in fact referring to those dwellings which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has prepared for His chosen and elect among His creation.”

And this tradition was also narrated by Ibn Babawayh from his father (may Allah have mercy on him), who said: Muhammad ibn Yahya al-‘Attar narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad, from al-Husayn ibn Yazid, from al-Husayn ibn A‘yan, the brother of Malik ibn A‘yan, who said: I asked Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) – the exact same narration [was reported].

99-/10361 – From the book Sifat al-Jannah wa al-Nar: From Abu Ja‘far Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn ‘Isa, who said: Sa‘id ibn Janāḥ narrated to me, from ‘Awf ibn ‘Abdullah al-Azdī, from Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him) – in a long narration – he said:

“And he narrated that the ḥūr al-‘īn (wide-eyed maidens of Paradise) were created by Allah in Paradise along with its trees, and He reserved them for their husbands in this world. Upon each one of them are seventy garments, yet the whiteness of their legs can be seen through the seventy garments, just as red wine can be seen through a white glass bottle, and like white thread in a red ruby. A man will engage with her intimately with the strength of one hundred men, and with the desire of forty years.”

[1] Thus it appears; and in Maʿānī al-Akhbār, it says: "bi-ismi dhālik" (“by the name of that”). al-Majlisī (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding the statement (peace be upon him): "summī" — this is how it appears in most manuscripts, and apparently it should be "summīna" (they were named). It may also be read in the active voice (summā), meaning Allah named them in His saying: “khayrāt (good ones)”. It is also possible that the referent is the vegetation, i.e., the river was named after that vegetation — namely, the ships — because Allah called them khayrāt. (Mirʾāt al-ʿUqūl, 26/166)

“None has touched them before, neither man nor jinn” [Qur'an 55:74] — meaning: no human nor jinn has ever touched them at all.

“In them are good and beautiful ones” — meaning: good in character, beautiful in face.

“As though they are rubies and coral” [Qur'an 55:58] — meaning: in the clarity of ruby and the whiteness of pearls.”

99-/10361 (cont’d) – He said: “Indeed, in Paradise there is a river, and on its banks are maidens. Then the Lord, Blessed and Exalted, inspires them, saying: Make My servants hear My glorification, My praise, and My thanks. So they raise their voices with melodies and resonant tunes the like of which no creatures have ever heard, and the people of Paradise are delighted and enchanted by it.”
