The Elegy Recited by Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.) in the Court of Yazid
The Elegy Recited by Imam al-Sajjad (a.s.) in the Court of Yazid
The thirteenth gathering was in the court of Yazīd in Shām.
The reciter of the elegy was Imām al-Sajjād (a.s.), while the listeners were the people of Shām and Yazīd himself.
The Imām ascended the pulpit and delivered a sermon containing praise and glorification of Allah and blessings upon his grandfather, the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.), and upon his other grandfather, Amīr al-Muʾminīn (a.s.).
He then began speaking about the tragedy of his noble father until he said:
“I am the son of the one whose head was severed from the back of his neck.
I am the son of the one whose turban and cloak were stripped from him.”
At these words, cries and weeping arose from the people of Shām and even from the Banū Umayyah.
Yazīd feared that unrest would break out, so he ordered the muʾadhdhin to call the adhān.
If the Banū Umayyah and the people of Shām mourned and wept merely upon hearing that the head of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) had been severed from behind and that his turban and cloak had been taken from him, then what should the Shīʿah do when they reflect upon how his turban was removed, in what condition he was, and at what moment this occurred? [704]
The fourteenth gathering was the gathering of the women in the house of Yazīd.
Lady Zaynab (a.s.), Umm Kulthūm (a.s.), and the daughters of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) recited elegies, while Yazīd's wife, his daughters, and the women of Banū Umayyah wept and lamented.
This was after Yazīd gave permission for mourning to be held for Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.).
They held gatherings of mourning for seven days. [705]
The fifteenth gathering was that of Imām al-Sajjād (a.s.) in the desert outside Madinah after the return of the Ahl al-Bayt.
After the tents had been erected and the people of Madinah came out to welcome them, a chair was placed for the Imām.
He sat upon it while tears flowed continuously from his eyes. He wiped them with a cloth, yet the tears continued without pause.
When the people of Madinah saw him in that state, cries of grief and lamentation rose from them until it seemed that the entire area had become one great outcry.
The Imām signaled for them to be silent, and after they quieted down somewhat, he said:
“Praise and glorification belong to the Lord of the worlds, the Master of the Day of Judgment, and the Creator of all creatures.
I praise Him despite the hardships of time, the blows of fate, and the countless severe calamities.
O people! Know that Allah has tested us with a tremendous affliction and a calamity that has created a great rupture in Islam.
O people! Abū ʿAbdillāh (a.s.) and his family were killed and drenched in blood. His household and children were taken captive, and their heads were carried upon spears through the lands.
This is a calamity the like of which has never been seen.
What honorable man can remain joyful after witnessing such a tragedy?
What eye can refrain from tears for him?
The heavens wept for him. The seas surged in grief. The earth, the trees, the fish, the angels brought near to Allah, and the inhabitants of the heavens and the earth all wept over his condition.
What heart can fail to break for him?
What ear can bear to hear of such a tragedy?
O people! We, the Ahl al-Bayt, were driven from place to place and taken from one city to another like captives from Turkistan and Kābul, despite having committed no sin and caused no corruption in the religion.
Such a thing has never before occurred in the world.
By Allah! If the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) had instructed them to fight us and harm us, they could not have done more than what they actually did, despite all the recommendations he made concerning us.
Yet despite these soul-crushing calamities, we, the Ahl al-Bayt, remain pleased with and submitted to the decree of Allah.
We have entrusted our affair to Him, and He is the Mighty and the Avenger.” [706]
The sixteenth gathering was that of Umm Kulthūm (a.s.) when the outlines of Madinah became visible.
She recited an elegy, while Imām al-Sajjād (a.s.) and the rest of the Ahl al-Bayt listened.
She first addressed Madinah itself, then her grandfather, her mother, and her brother, as will be mentioned later, if Allah wills. [707]
The seventeenth gathering is that of the angels, which is held every day at the grave of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) until the Day of Judgment, in ways that will be discussed in the section concerning the angels.
The eighteenth gathering is the one held every day for Lady Fāṭimah (a.s.) in the heavens until the Day of Judgment, even on the days of ʿĪd and other occasions.
Its summary is that every day that noble lady looks toward the place where her son al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) was martyred. Then she cries out in such a manner that all the pillars of creation—the heavens, the earths, the seas, and the angels—are shaken and disturbed.
Then the Messenger of Allah (s.a.w.a.) comes to her and consoles her until she becomes calm.
After that, she supplicates for the visitors of her son. [708]
The nineteenth gatherings are those of the Pure Imāms (a.s.).
Among them was the gathering of Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.), in which Jaʿfar ibn ʿAffān recited the elegy. [709]
The meaning of his verses was:
“Indeed, if anyone is to weep, then let him weep for Islam, whose laws were neglected and lost when swords and spears were drenched with the blood of al-Ḥusayn (a.s.).” [710]
Another gathering of Imām al-Ṣādiq (a.s.) was one in which ʿAbdullāh ibn Ghālib recited the elegy.
Its meaning was:
“Weep for the body of al-Ḥusayn (a.s.), lying uncovered upon the burning ground while the winds scattered dust and sand over him.” [711]
Another gathering of that Imām was when he instructed Abū Hārūn al-Makfūf:
“Recite with tenderness and emotion just as you recite elegies among your own people.”
Abū Hārūn recited verses whose meaning was:
“Imagine the body of Imām al-Ḥusayn (a.s.), and address that pure body...”
At this, the Imām wept.
Then the Imām said:
“Continue.”
So he began another poem whose opening meaning was:
“O Maryam, arise and lament and mourn for your master. Weep over al-Ḥusayn.”
The Imām wept, and cries, wailing, lamentation, and the call of “O my father!” rose from within his noble household. [712]
Another gathering was that of Imām al-Riḍā (a.s.), in which the elegy was recited by Diʿbil al-Khuzāʿī.
The Imām himself organized the gathering. He stood up, hung a curtain, seated the women behind it, and then instructed Diʿbil:
“Recite.”
The Imām also said:
“Whoever's eyes shed tears for the tragedy of my grandfather al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) shall be gathered with us on the Day of Judgment.”
Then Diʿbil began reciting an elegy whose meaning was:
“O Fāṭimah! If you could have seen al-Ḥusayn lying slain and martyred, thirsty beside the Euphrates, you would surely have struck your face and tears would have flowed upon your cheeks.”
He continued the poem, while the Imām wept and the women cried aloud in grief. [713]
The twentieth gathering is that of the angels every day, apart from the one already mentioned, as will be explained later, if Allah wills.
The twenty-first gatherings are those of the Shīʿah, which shall continue until the Day of Judgment.
One of their unique qualities is that they never become a source of weariness or boredom.
More astonishing still is that with each passing year they increase in honor, popularity, and splendor.
Indeed, no town remains—whether among the lands of believers, hypocrites, opponents, or even non-Muslims—except that gatherings for the mourning of al-Ḥusayn (a.s.) are held there.
Rather, in recent years, public mourning gatherings have been established openly in Baghdad, Constantinople, Egypt, and Shām.
