24. Saved from Execution through Intercession of Imam Husain (a.s.)

In the year 1324 solar (about 1945 CE), when Azerbaijan was under Soviet occupation and ruled by the Democrats, ten heads of the mourning committees were arrested and imprisoned near Qaflankuh mountain.

After some time, they were sentenced to death. Ten gallows were set up, and their execution order was announced.

These men said to the authorities:

“We have committed no crime except being the heads of Husaini mourning processions. Now that we are to be executed, at least allow us to weep freely for Imam Husain (a.s.), then execute us.”

The authorities replied:

“There is no problem with that.”

These ten, who were ardent lovers of Imam Husain (a.s.), and were to be executed for that very reason, poured out their hearts in a final, fervent intercession and supplication.

Suddenly, a messenger arrived carrying an order from Baku, granting their freedom.

Had they not made that request to cry for Imam Husain (a.s.), they would have been executed in the first hour. But through the blessing of their intercession and humble appeal to the Master of Martyrs, they were saved from certain death and released.

Two of these individuals were from Baghmishah, my own hometown — one named Karbala’i Muhammad Ali Na‘alband, and the other Karbala’i Sayyid Ali; I personally knew both of them well and heard this story many times from Karbala’i Muhammad Ali Na‘alband in my late father’s shop.

(2) The Late Sayyid Isma‘il Rasūlzāda (1300–1384 SH) narrated on the pulpit of Masjid al-Ghadir in Tehran during Muharram 1373 SH:

In Langarud, a Sunni man murdered a Shi‘a believer. In court, he confessed to the killing and was sentenced to qisas (retaliatory execution). Despite every effort by the killer’s family to gain the consent of the victim’s guardian, they failed.

The killer’s father went to the prison and told his son that in three days he would be executed. On the third day, the gallows were prepared, and the families of both the murderer and the victim were present. The killer was brought to the site, and the rope was placed around his neck.

They said to the father of the murdered man:

“Come and carry out the sentence.”

The father of the victim stepped forward, removed the rope from around the killer’s neck, and released him.

At that moment, the killer began to weep intensely, while the crowd applauded.

When they asked him the reason for his crying, he said:

“I had made an appeal and a vow to Imam Husain (a.s.) that if he saved me, I would become a Shi‘a. When the rope was placed around my neck, I called out: ‘Husain, why have you not accepted me? Why have you left me hopeless?’”

This intercession affected the heart of the victim’s father, and he set me free.

(3) Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimīn Āqā Haj Āqā Ja‘far Shīrāzī narrated on Saturday 24/4/1391 SH (24 Sha‘bān 1433 AH):

At one time a death sentence was issued for my uncle, the martyr Sayyid Hasan Shīrāzī. They brought him to the gallows and tied the rope around his neck. Until the last moment he stood firm and unwavering. When the officer began to count down — 3, 2 — suddenly a dread of death struck him and in his heart he turned to Imam Husain (a.s.) in intercession.

After the officer counted “3” and “2,” he never managed to say “1.”

Martyr Shīrāzī felt there was commotion and noise; he opened his eyes and saw that the ceiling of the central police station had collapsed and everyone had run toward that disaster. He loosened the rope from his neck and escaped.

(4) He (the speaker) narrated another incident as well:

Someone was among a group lined up for execution. One by one, they were taken away and executed. Before it was this person’s turn, the roof of that place collapsed, which distracted the officers, and he too managed to escape.

(5) My respected friend, Hujjat al-Islam wal-Muslimīn Āqā Sayyid Husain Shāhīn, narrated from his friend Āqā Khodādādpūr of Rasht as follows:

A person in the holy city of Mashhad had made a vow to perform prayer regularly. Later, in Rasht, he suffered brain death. An angel came to seize his soul; his body turned cold up to the waist. Suddenly he saw a lady arrive, and behind her another lady, and behind them eleven dignified personalities.

That first lady addressed her companions, saying:

“Pray for this person, because he has mourned for my son Husain.”

Then she ordered the angel:

“You leave.”

And she addressed the dying man:

“You are well again. Go back to your life, and do not forget your vow.”

He asked:

“What vow?”

She replied:

“You vowed to perform the prayer.”

He rose up and pleaded with the lady to take him with her. But then a scene appeared before his eyes showing his wife and two children crying beside him, and he began shouting:

“I do not want to die!”
