English: Al-‘Askari (peace be upon them) said to him: “What has brought you, O Sa‘d?” I said: “Ahmad ibn Ishaq has made me yearn to meet our master.” He said: “And the questions you wanted to ask?” I said: “They remain as they were, O my master.” He said: “Then ask the delight of my eye about them,” and he gestured with his hand to the youth—meaning his son, al-Qa’im (peace be upon him). The youth said to me: “Ask whatever occurs to you.” He mentioned the questions until I said: “Inform me, O son of the Messenger of Allah, about the interpretation of Kaf-Ha-Ya-‘Ayn-Sad.” He said: “These letters are from the tidings of the unseen which Allah disclosed to His servant Zakariyya, then related them to Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family). This is because Zakariyya (peace be upon him) asked his Lord to teach him the names of the Five. So Allah sent down to him Jibril (peace be upon him), who taught him those names. Whenever Zakariyya mentioned Muhammad, ‘Ali, Fatimah, and al-Hasan (peace be upon them), his worry was lifted and his distress dispersed. But when he mentioned al-Husayn (peace be upon him), tears choked him and he was overtaken by gasping. One day he said: ‘My God, why is it that when I mention four of them I find solace from my concerns in their names, but when I mention al-Husayn my eyes shed tears and my sigh surges?’ So Allah, blessed and exalted, informed him of his story, and said: Kaf-Ha-Ya-‘Ayn-Sad. Kaf is the name of Karbala’; Ha is the destruction of the ‘itrah (the Prophet’s family); Ya is Yazid (may Allah curse him), the oppressor of al-Husayn (peace be upon him); ‘Ayn is his thirst; and Sad is his patience. When Zakariyya heard that, he did not leave his place of worship for three days. He kept people from entering upon him and devoted himself to weeping and wailing. His lament was: ‘My God, will You bereave the best of Your creation by his child? My God, will You send down the affliction of this calamity into his courtyard? My God, will You clothe ‘Ali and Fatimah in the garments of this misfortune? My God, will You cause the anguish of this catastrophe to descend upon their domain?’ Then he would say: ‘My God, grant me a child who will delight my eyes in my old age. Make him an heir and a legatee. Place his station with me like the station of al-Husayn. If You grant him to me, then test me with love for him, then bereave me of him as You bereave Muhammad, Your beloved, of his son.’ So Allah granted him Yahya (peace be upon him) and bereaved him of him. The pregnancy of Yahya (peace be upon him) was six months, and the pregnancy of al-Husayn (peace be upon him) was likewise.”
English: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim—from Ja‘far ibn Ahmad, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Musa, from al-Hasan ibn ‘Ali ibn Abi Hamzah, from his father, from Abu Basir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him)—said: “Kaf-Ha-Ya-‘Ayn-Sad are separated letters.” As for His saying Kaf-Ha-Ya-‘Ayn-Sad, he said: “Allah is al-Kafi (the All-Sufficient), al-Hadi (the Guide), al-‘Alim (the All-Knowing), al-Sadiq (the Truthful), Dhu al-Ayadi al-‘izam (Possessor of great bounties), and that is His statement as He has described Himself, blessed and exalted.”

English (Qur’an 19:2-10, M. H. Shakir): A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariya. When he called upon his Lord in a low voice, He said: My Lord! surely my bones are weakened and my head flares with hoariness, and, my Lord! I have never been unsuccessful in my prayer to Thee. And surely I fear my cousins after me, and my wife is barren, therefore grant me from Thyself an heir, Who should inherit me and inherit from the children of Ya‘qub, and make him, my Lord, one in whom Thou art well pleased. O Zakariya! surely We give you good news of a boy whose name shall be Yahya: We have not made before anyone his equal. He said: My Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age? He said: So shall it be, your Lord says: It is easy to Me, and indeed I created you before, when you were nothing. He said: My Lord! give me a sign. He said: Your sign is that you shall not speak to men three nights, though sound.
English: ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim reported: Abu al-Jarud, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), regarding His saying, “A mention of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zakariya,” said: “Your Lord mentioned His servant and had mercy upon him,” إذ نادى ربه نداء خفياً ... “when he called upon his Lord in a low voice…,” and “إني وهن العظم مني” means “it has weakened,” and “ولم أكن بدعائك رب شقياً” means “my supplication has not been disappointed with You.” “وإني خفت الموالي من ورائي” means “I feared the heirs after me,” and “وكانت امرأتي عاقراً” means “Zakariya had no child then to stand in his place and inherit him; the gifts and vows of the Children of Israel were for the ahbar (scholars), and Zakariya was the chief of the ahbar. The wife of Zakariya was the sister of Maryam daughter of ‘Imran ibn Mathan, and the Banu Mathan at that time were the leaders of the Children of Israel and the sons of their kings; they were from the progeny of Sulayman son of Dawud. So Zakariya said: ‘Grant me from Yourself an heir, who shall inherit me and inherit from the House of Ya‘qub, and make him, my Lord, well-pleasing.’ ‘O Zakariya! We give you good news of a boy whose name is Yahya; We have not assigned to him before anyone of his name,’ meaning no one before him was named Yahya. He said: ‘My Lord! How shall I have a boy, and my wife is barren, and I have reached extreme old age?’ meaning: he was despairing. He said: ‘So shall it be; your Lord says: It is easy for Me, and indeed I created you before when you were nothing.’ He said: ‘My Lord, make for me a sign.’ He said: ‘Your sign is that you shall not speak to the people three nights, while being sound—without illness.’”

English: Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas said: Muhammad ibn Hammam ibn Suhayl narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Isma‘il al-‘Alawi, from ‘Isa ibn Dawud al-Najjar, who said: Abu al-Hasan Musa ibn Ja‘far (peace be upon them) narrated to me: “I was one day sitting with my father until a man came and stood by him and said: ‘Is the one among you who opens up knowledge and its chief—Muhammad ibn ‘Ali—here?’ It was said to him: ‘Yes.’ He sat a long time, then went to him and said: ‘O son of the Messenger of Allah, inform me about the word of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, in the story of Zakariyya: “And surely I fear my mawali after me, and my wife is barren” (the verse).’ He said: ‘Yes, al-mawali are the sons of the paternal uncle, and Allah loved to grant him a guardian from his own loins. That was because of what he knew of the merit of Muhammad (may Allah bless him and his family). He said: “My Lord, have You not ennobled Muhammad, honored him, and raised his mention until You conjoined it with Your mention? What prevents You, my Master, from granting him offspring from his own loins in whom prophethood would be?” He said: “O Zakariyya, I have done that for Muhammad, and there is no prophethood after him—he is the Seal of the Prophets. But the Imamate is for his cousin and brother, ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, after him. I have transferred the progeny from the loins of ‘Ali to the womb of Fatimah daughter of Muhammad, making some of them from others, and I have brought forth from him the Imams, My proofs over My creation. And I will bring forth from your loins a son who will inherit you and inherit from the House of Ya‘qub.” Then Allah granted him Yahya (peace be upon him).’”
