116. The Healing of a Cancer Patient Through Tawassul to Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (a.s.)
Around forty years ago, a Christian man came to one of the great Marājiʿ and said, “I have come to accept Islam and Shīʿism.” The Marjaʿ asked, “What caused you to decide to become a Muslim?”
He replied, “I had been suffering from esophageal cancer for a long time, to the extent that not even a single drop of water could pass through my throat easily. The doctor I was seeing in Tehran said, ‘Your house is in the south of Tehran; you should move to the north where the air is lighter, so you can breathe a bit easier.’ I rented out my house and took an apartment in the northern part of the city.
One day, a neighbor who didn’t know I was Christian knocked and said, ‘Neighbor! Today we have a majlis (mourning gathering). Please come, we would be honored.’
To become familiar with the neighbors, I went to their apartment at the designated time. A speaker came, gave a brief talk, and then did tawassul to Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar (ʿa), saying: ‘Don’t think that Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar is a mere child and cannot help — with his small fingers, he can untie the greatest knots.’
Right there, I made a vow: if this noble child heals me, I will accept Islam.
The majlis ended, and they brought tea. I didn’t take it, but the host insisted. I said, ‘I am sick and cannot.’ He said, ‘Drink it with the intention of healing.’ I picked up the tea, brought it to my lips just to moisten them — and suddenly I felt I could drink! Slowly I drank it all. I didn’t say anything to anyone. I returned to my apartment upstairs — no one was home. I went to the fridge and drank all the liquids I could find. It had been months since even a drop could go down my throat.
I took my medical file and went to the doctor. As soon as he saw me, he said: ‘You don’t need any new medicine. Just continue with your current prescription.’ I said, ‘I’ve come to be re-examined.’ He said, ‘It’s of no use.’ I replied, ‘It will be of benefit to you — you’ll get your consultation fee.’
When he looked at my throat, he asked, ‘Did you go to America?’ I said, ‘No.’ ‘Did you go to England?’ I said, ‘No.’ He said, ‘Then where did you go? Who treated you?’ I replied, ‘No one.’
He said, ‘Then perhaps Hazrat Masīḥ (Jesus) came to your aid!’ I said, ‘Someone greater than Hazrat Masīḥ.’ He asked, ‘Who?’ I said, ‘Hazrat ʿAlī Aṣghar, the beloved of Hazrat Sayyid al-Shuhadāʾ (a.s.).’
My dear friend Ḥujjat al-Islām wal-Muslimīn Āqā Mīrzā Ghulām Husain Nūrī was present in that gathering and narrated this story to me directly.
