[3:30] On the day when every soul shall find present what it has done of good and what it has done of evil, it shall wish that between it and that (evil) there were a long distance; and Allah cautions you against Himself; and Allah is Compassionate to the servants. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1648 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: He said: Muhammad b. Yahya narrated to me, from Ahmad b. Muhammad b. ‘Isa, and ‘Ali b. Ibrahim, [from his father][1] together, from al-Hasan b. Mahbub, from ‘Abd Allah b. Ghalib, from his father, from Sa‘id b. al-Musayyab, who said:

‘Ali b. al-Husayn (peace be upon him) used to admonish the people, make them renounce the world, and encourage them toward works of the Hereafter with these words every Friday in the Mosque of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family). They were preserved from him and written down. He used to say: “O people, fear Allah, and know that you shall be returned to Him; then every soul shall find present what it has done of good in this world, and what it has done of evil it will wish there were a long distance between it and that. And Allah warns you of Himself. Woe to you, O son of Adam—heedless, though he is not disregarded.

O son of Adam, your appointed term is the swiftest thing coming toward you; it has hastened toward you [2], seeking you and soon to overtake you. It is as though you have fulfilled your term, the angel has seized your soul, and you have gone, alone, to your grave. There your soul is returned to you, and two angels break in upon you:

Nakir and Nakir, to question you and to test you severely.

Behold, the first things they will ask you about are your Lord whom you used to worship, your Prophet who was sent to you, your religion by which you used to practice, your Book which you used to recite, and your Imam whom you used to be loyal to; then about your lifetime—how you spent it; and your wealth—whence you acquired it and on what you spent it.

So take your precautions, look out for your own soul, and prepare the answer before the testing, the questioning, and the examination. If you are a believer, knowing your religion, following the truthful ones, loyal to the friends of Allah, Allah will present you with your proof, make your tongue speak rightly, you will give a good answer, and you will be given glad tidings of Allah’s good pleasure and the Garden; and the angels will greet you with comfort and sweet herbs. But if you are not thus, your tongue will falter, your proof will collapse, you will be unable to answer, you will be given the tidings of the Fire, and the angels of punishment will meet you with a reception of boiling drink and burning in a blazing Fire.

And know, O son of Adam, that beyond this is something greater, more dreadful, and more grievous to the hearts: the Day of Resurrection—that is the day for which mankind shall be gathered, and that is a day witnessed [3], in which Allah, Mighty and Majestic, will gather the first and the last. That is the day when the Trumpet will be blown, and those in the graves will be scattered forth; and that is the Day of Approaching, when the hearts shall be at the throats, choked [1]. That is a day in which no slip will be excused, no ransom taken from anyone, no excuse accepted from anyone, and for none is there any future repentance. There is nothing but recompense for good deeds and recompense for evil deeds.

So whoever among the believers did in this world the weight of a speck of good shall find it, and whoever among the believers did in this world the weight of a speck of evil shall find it.”’

[3:31] Say: If you love Allah, then follow me, Allah will love you and forgive you your faults, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (M. H. Shakir)

99-/1649 _1- Muhammad b. Ya‘qub: With his chain from Jabir b. Yazid, from Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him), who said: “The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: Allah said in the decisive part of His Book: Whoever obeys the Messenger indeed obeys Allah, and whoever turns back—We have not sent you as a keeper over them [2]. He coupled obedience to him with obedience to Himself, and disobedience to him with disobedience to Himself. That is a proof of what was delegated to him, and a testimony for him against those who follow him and those who disobey him. He made this clear in various places of the Mighty Book. Exalted and Most High He said, urging the following of him, encouraging belief in him, and acceptance of his call: Say: If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Thus, following him (may Allah bless him and his family) is [the path to] Allah’s love and His good pleasure, the forgiveness of sins, perfect success, and the entitlement to the Garden; while turning away from him and shunning is opposing Allah, incurring His anger and wrath, and being far from Him—the abode of the Fire. And that is His saying: And whoever among the parties disbelieves in him—the Fire is his promised place [3], meaning denial of him and disobedience to him.”

99-/1650 _2- From him: He said: ‘Ali b. Ibrahim narrated to me, from his father, from Ibn Faddal, from Hafs the mu’adhdhin, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him). And from Muhammad b. Isma‘il b. Bazī‘, from Muhammad b. Sinān, from Isma‘il b. Jabir, from Abu ‘Abd Allah (peace be upon him), in a written document which he brought out for his companions: “And know that when Allah intends good for a servant, He opens his breast to Islam. When He grants him that, his tongue speaks the truth, his heart is bound to it, and he acts by it. When Allah brings all that together for him, his Islam is complete, and if he dies in that state he is, with Allah, truly among the Muslims.

But if Allah does not intend good for a servant, He leaves him to himself; his breast is constricted and tight. If a truth runs upon his tongue, his heart does not bind to it…”
