Comparison of the Weeping of Ādam (a.s.) and the Weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.)

Comparison of the Weeping of Ādam (a.s.) and the Weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.)

Imam Husain (a.s.) was likewise afflicted with something similar. All at once he departed from the paradise of companionship with his friends, children, and brothers within the span of two hours.

As it is narrated, when none of his companions or helpers remained, a young child came out from the tents, wearing an earring in his ear. He looked in every direction with fear and anxiety. Then Hānī ibn Thabīt reached him and struck him with a sword, martyring him. [1341]

And when that one too was gone, he said to his sister:

“Bring me the nursing infant.”

She brought the child and placed him in his hands, and then what happened took place. [1342]

And when that one too was gone, he called out to the womenfolk. Then, when he departed from them and saw the lands transformed and found no one remaining with him, he composed verses with the same meaning as those which Ādam (a.s.) had composed. [1343]

And he supplicated just as Ādam (a.s.) had supplicated.

Ādam (a.s.), according to one narration, wept for two hundred years. [1344]

Imam Husain (a.s.) wept during a single day at several different places and occasions. [1345]

However, the weeping of that noble one (a.s.) cannot be compared to the weeping of Ādam (a.s.), for the weeping of Ādam was the weeping of separation for his own sake, whereas the weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.) arose from tenderness and compassion.

The weeping of Ādam, although lengthy and intense to the extent that rivers flowed from his tears, [1346] was nevertheless different from the weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.), which was blood flowing from the spring of his heart.

The weeping of Ādam (a.s.) was accompanied by consolation, whereas the weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.) had no consolation.

The weeping of Ādam (a.s.) was for one son who had been killed, whereas the weeping of Imam Husain (a.s.) was for his brothers, his children, his cousins, his companions, his family, and his little children.

Ādam (a.s.) was afflicted with the hardship of obtaining sustenance and food for himself and his wife, because at that time the means of livelihood on earth could only be acquired with great difficulty. Therefore, learning the means and applying them without assistance involved immense hardship. Had it not been for divine support, living would not have been possible for him.

Imam Husain (a.s.) was afflicted with the task of obtaining water to quench the thirst of his family and children, despite the fact that water was present there.

Thus that noble one endured immense hardship and bore various kinds of physical and emotional suffering.

At times he himself admonished those people. [1347]

At times he sent someone to admonish them. [1348]

At times he sent someone to appeal to them. [1349]

At times during the night he secretly sent a group to them. [1350]

At times he dug a well. [1351]

At times he himself pleaded on behalf of the women, saying:

“These women are not fighting against you.” [1352]

And at times

he pleaded on behalf of his infant child. [1353]

At times he showed that child to them and said, in effect, “See how restless he has become from thirst.” [1354]

And at times he asked for water for himself during the moments of his final agony. [1355]

Ādam (a.s.), after his hardship, eventually obtained food.

But Imam Husain (a.s.), after all those hardships, still gave his life with parched lips.

May the souls of all the worlds be sacrificed for him.

Ādam (a.s.) Being Afflicted with the Killing of Hābīl and Imam Husain (a.s.) Being Afflicted with the Killing of ʿAlī al-Akbar (a.s.)

Ādam (a.s.) was afflicted when Qābīl killed Hābīl, buried him, and the earth absorbed his blood.

Then Ādam (a.s.) cursed the earth, and after that the earth no longer absorbed the blood of anyone. [1356]

And Imam Husain (a.s.) saw his son ʿAlī (a.s.) torn into pieces, without burial and without a shroud. [1357]

Ādam (a.s.) wept for Hābīl for forty days and nights.

Then revelation came to him that Allah had granted him, in place of Hābīl, Hibatullāh, who was Shīth.

And Imam Husain (a.s.) wept for his son for half an hour, yet that half hour was equal to those forty days.

After that, he was afflicted with the killing of another son, namely ʿAlī al-Aṣghar (a.s.), and with separation from another ʿAlī, namely Imam Zayn al-ʿĀbidīn (a.s.).
