Yunus Ayah 62-64

[Qur’an 6:139, 6:136; and 10:59 (part)] And they say: What is in the wombs of these cattle is specially for our males and forbidden to our wives… [6:139], and His saying: And they assign to Allah a portion out of what He has created of tilth and cattle… [6:136]. So Allah argued against them, saying: Say: Has Allah permitted you, or do you forge a lie against Allah? [10:59, M. H. Shakir: Say: Tell me, what Allah has sent down to you of sustenance, then you make (a part) of it unlawful and (a part) lawful. Say: Has Allah commanded you, or do you forge a lie against Allah?]

6:139. [al-An‘ām 6:139] [M. H. Shakir: And they say: What is in the wombs of these cattle is especially for our males and forbidden to our wives, and if it be dead, then they are all partners in it; He will chastise them for what they ascribe (to Him); surely He is Wise, Knowing.]

6:136. [al-An‘ām 6:136] [M. H. Shakir: And they set apart for Allah a portion of the tilth and the cattle which He created, and say: This is for Allah—so they assert—and this for our associates; but what is for their associates, it reaches not Allah, and whatever is for Allah, it reaches their associates; evil is that which they judge.]

[Qur’an 10:61] [M. H. Shakir: And you are not (engaged) in any affair, nor do you recite concerning it any portion of the Qur’an, nor do you do any deed but We are witnesses over you when you enter into it; and there does not lie concealed from your Lord the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven, nor any thing less than that nor greater, but it is in a clear book.]

99-/4923 _1- This is an address to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family): “Nor do you do any deed but We are witnesses over you.” He said: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) recited this verse, he wept intensely. The meaning of “And you are not (engaged) in any affair” is: in any deed that you do, good or evil. And “nor does anything remain hidden from your Lord” means that not even the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven, nor anything smaller or greater, is absent from Him; all is in a clear Book.

[Qur’an 10:62-64] [M. H. Shakir: Now surely the friends of Allah—they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve. Those who believe and guard (against evil): They shall have good news in this world's life and in the hereafter; there is no changing the words of Allah; that is the mighty achievement.]

99-/4924 _2- Muhammad b. Ya‘qūb, from several of our companions, from Sahl b. Ziyād, from Ibn Faḍḍāl, from ‘Alī b. ‘Uqbah, from his father, said: Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him) said to me: “O ‘Uqbah, Allah will accept from the servants on the Day of Resurrection nothing except this matter upon which you are. And there is nothing between any one of you and (the moment) that he sees what will delight his eye except that his soul reaches here”—then he gestured with his hand to the jugular—“then he reclined. Al-Mu‘allā was with me and signaled to me to ask him. I said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, when his soul reaches here, what does he see? I asked him a dozen-odd times: What does he see? He said each time: ‘He sees,’ and added nothing. Then at the end he sat up and said: ‘O ‘Uqbah.’ I said:

He said: “At your service!” He said: “You insist on knowing?” I said: “Yes, O son of the Messenger of Allah. My religion is only with your religion; if my religion is gone, that is ruin—how can I be with you every moment?” And I wept. He took pity on me and said: “By Allah, he sees them.” I said: “May my father and mother be your ransom, who are they?” He said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and ‘Alī (peace be upon him). O ‘Uqbah, no believing soul ever dies until it sees them both.” I said: “If the believer looks upon them, does he return to the world?” He said: “No; once he has looked upon them, he proceeds forward.” I said to him: “Do they say anything?” He said: “Yes. They both enter upon the believer; the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sits at his head, and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) at his feet. The Messenger of Allah bends over him and says: ‘O friend of Allah, rejoice! I am the Messenger of Allah. I am better for you than what you are leaving of the world.’ Then the Messenger of Allah rises, and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) comes until he bends over him and says: ‘O friend of Allah, rejoice! I am ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib, the one you used to love—indeed I shall benefit you.’” Then he said: “This is in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” I said: “Where is this in the Book of Allah—may I be your ransom?” He said: “In Yūnus, the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic: ‘Those who believe and are Godwary—theirs is the good news in the life of this world and in the Hereafter—there is no changing the words of Allah; that is the supreme triumph’ [10:62–64].”

[1] Al-Majlisī said in (البحار 6:186) [al-Biḥār 6:186]: That is, my religion is only upright if it accords with your religion; so if my religion goes due to my ignorance of what you hold, that means loss, destruction, and eternal punishment—he alluded to it vaguely to magnify it.

[5] Al-Majlisī said in (البحار 6:294) [al-Biḥār 6:294]: His words “and it is more tremendous” may be his (peace be upon him) meaning that the dying person deems it a great matter; or from the narrator, meaning he (peace be upon him) magnified my words and found strange what I said about returning to the world after seeing that—and this is more apparent.

Aḥmad al-Kātib narrated to us, who said: Ibn Abī Khaythamah narrated to us, who said: ‘Abd Allāh b. Dāhir narrated to us, from al-A‘mash, from ‘Abāyah al-Asadī, from Ibn ‘Abbās, may Allah have mercy on him, who said: The Commander of the Faithful, ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him), was asked about His saying, Exalted is He: “Now surely the friends of Allah—they shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve.” It was said to him: Who are these friends? The Commander of the Faithful said: “They are a people who purified their worship for Allah, the Exalted; they looked to the inward of this world when people looked to its outward; they recognized its future while creation besides them was deluded by its immediate (allure); so they left from it what they knew would (one day) leave them, and they put to death from it what they knew would put them to death.” Then he said: “O you who beguile your soul with the world, racing upon its snares, striving to build up what of it will be ruined! Have you not seen the resting-places of your fathers in decay, and the couches of your sons beneath the stones and the dust? How many you nursed with your hands and treated with your palms; you consult physicians for them and seek favor for them from loved ones—yet your help avails them nothing, and your medicines do not benefit them.”

99-/4929 _6- Al-‘Ayyāshī: from ‘Abd al-Raḥmān b. Sālim al-Ashal, from some jurists, who said: The Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) said: “Now surely the friends of Allah—they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.” Then he said: “Do you know who the friends of Allah are?” They said: Who are they, O Commander of the Faithful? He said: “They are we and our followers; whoever follows us after us. Glad tidings (ṭūbā) for us and glad tidings for them, and their glad tidings are better than ours.” It was said: O Commander of the Faithful, how is it that their glad tidings are better than ours? Are we not and they upon one matter? He said: “No—because they were burdened with what you were not burdened with, and they endured what you could not endure.”

99-/4932 _9- From ‘Uqbah b. Khālid, who said: I and al-Mu‘allā entered upon Abū ‘Abd Allāh (peace be upon him). He said: “O ‘Uqbah, Allah will accept from the servants on the Day of Resurrection nothing except this religion upon which you are; and there is nothing between any one of you and (the moment) he sees what will delight his eye except that his soul reaches here”—and he gestured with his hand to the jugular—then he reclined. Al-Mu‘allā nudged me to ask him; I said: O son of the Messenger of Allah, when his soul reaches here, what does he see? He said: “He sees.” I asked him a dozen-odd times: What does he see? At the end he said: “O ‘Uqbah.” I said: At your service! He said: “You insist on knowing?” I said: Yes, O son of the Messenger of Allah—my religion is only with your religion; if my religion goes, that is death. How can I be with you every moment? And I wept. He took pity on me and said: “By Allah, he sees them.” I said: May my father and mother be your ransom—who are they? He said: “The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) and ‘Alī (peace be upon him). O ‘Uqbah, no believing soul ever dies until it sees them both.” I said: If the believer looks upon them, does he return to the world? He said: “No—he goes forward.” I said to him: Do they say anything to him—may I be your ransom? He said: “Yes. They both enter upon the believer; the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) sits by his head, and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) by his feet. The Messenger of Allah bends over him and says: ‘O friend of Allah, rejoice, for I am the Messenger of Allah. I am better for you than what you leave of the world.’ Then the Messenger of Allah rises, and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) comes until he bends over him and says: ‘O friend of Allah, rejoice. I am ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib, the one you used to love me—indeed I shall benefit you.’” Then he said: “Indeed this is in the Book of Allah.” He said: May I be your ransom—where in the Book of Allah? He said: “In Yūnus: ‘Those who believe and are Godwary—theirs is the good news in the life of this world and in the Hereafter … the Mighty Triumph.’ [10:62–64].”

99-/4933 _10- From Abū Ḥamzah al-Thumālī, who said: I said to Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him): What is done to a person at death? He said: “By Allah, O Abū Ḥamzah, there is nothing between any one of you and that he sees his station with Allah and his station among what delights his eye except that his soul reaches here”—then he lowered his hand to his throat—“Shall I give you good news, O Abū Ḥamzah?” I said: “Yes—may I be your ransom.” He said: “When that happens, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) comes to him—and ‘Alī (peace be upon him) with him—and sits by his head. Then the Messenger of Allah says to him when that happens: ‘Do you not recognize me? I am the Messenger of Allah. Come to us, for what is before you is better for you than what you have left behind. As for what you used to fear, you are now safe from it; and as for what you used to hope for, you have now come upon it. O soul, come out to the mercy of Allah and His good pleasure.’ And ‘Alī (peace be upon him) says to him the like of what the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family) says.” Then he said: “O Abū Ḥamzah, shall I inform you of this from the Book of Allah? His saying: ‘Those who believe and are Godwary…’ [10:62–64].”

99-/4934 _11- Sulaym b. Qays al-Hilālī said: I asked ‘Alī b. Abī Ṭālib (peace be upon him): May Allah set you aright—one who meets Allah as a believer, recognizing his Imam and obedient to him—is he among the people of Paradise? He said: “Yes—if he meets Allah while he is among those of whom Allah, Exalted, said: ‘Those who believe and do righteous deeds’ [2:25]; ‘Those who believe and are Godwary’ [10:62–64]; ‘Those who believe and do not mix their faith with injustice’ [6:82].” I said: And the one who meets Allah among them while upon the major sins? He said: “He is under Allah’s will: if He punishes him, it is for his sin; and if He pardons him, it is by His mercy.” I said: Will He admit him to the Fire while he is a believer? He said: “Yes—because he is not among the believers whom Allah meant when He said He is the Guardian of the believers. Those whom Allah meant that He is their Guardian, and that there is no fear upon them nor do they grieve, are the believers who are Godwary, who do righteous deeds, and who do not mix their faith with injustice.”

99-/4936 _13- Al-Ṭabrisī: On the meaning of “theirs is the good news in the life of this world and in the Hereafter,” from Abū Ja‘far (peace be upon him) regarding the meaning of glad tidings: “In the world, it is the righteous dream which the believer sees for himself or which is seen for him; and in the Hereafter, it is Paradise—what the angels give them as glad tidings when they come forth from the graves, and on the Day of Resurrection until they enter Paradise, they keep giving them glad tidings—state after state.” Then he said: And that is narrated in a raised hadith from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and his family).

[Qur’an 16:32] [M. H. Shakir: Those whom the angels cause to die in goodness, saying: Peace be on you; enter the garden for what you did.]

99-/4938 _15- Al-Ṭabrisī: On the meaning of “the friends of Allah,” from ‘Alī b. al-Ḥusayn (peace be upon him): “They are those who have performed Allah’s obligations, adhered to the sunnahs of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and his family), abstained scrupulously from Allah’s prohibitions, were ascetic regarding the immediacy of this world, and desired what is with Allah; they earned lawful provision from Allah for their livelihood—not seeking by it amassing or boasting—then spent it upon the obligatory rights due from it. Those are the ones whom Allah blesses in what they have earned, and they are rewarded for what they sent ahead of it for their Hereafter.”

4939 _16- And ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said about the meaning of the verse: The good news in the life of this world is the righteous dream which the believer sees; and in the Hereafter, it is Paradise at death, and it is Allah’s saying: “Those whom the angels cause to die in goodness (shall be told), Peace be on you, enter the Garden” [16:32]. Then he said: And His saying: “There is no changing the words of Allah” means: there is no alteration of the Imamate; and the proof that “the words” means the Imamate is His saying: “And He made it a remaining word in his posterity” [43:28], meaning the Imamate.

[Qur’an 16:32] [M. H. Shakir: Those whom the angels cause to die in goodness, saying: Peace be on you; enter the garden for what you did.]

[Qur’an 43:28] [M. H. Shakir: And he made it a word to continue in his posterity that they may return.]

[Qur’an 10:65–71] [M. H. Shakir: And let not their speech grieve you; surely might is wholly Allah's; He is the Hearing, the Knowing. Now, surely, whoever is in the heavens and whoever is in the earth is Allah's; and those who call upon associates besides Allah do not (really) follow (anything); they follow nothing but conjecture, and they only lie. He it is Who made the night that you might rest therein and the day to give light; most surely there are signs in it for a people who would hear. They say: Allah has taken to Himself a son. Glory be to Him: He is the Self-sufficient: His is whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth; you have no authority for this; do you say against Allah what you do not know? Say: As for those who forge a lie against Allah, they shall not be successful. A little enjoyment and they shall have a painful punishment. And recite to them the story of Nuh when he said to his people: O my people! if my stay and my reminding (you) by the communications of Allah is hard to you—yet on Allah do I rely—then resolve upon your affair and (gather) your associates, then let not your affair be a worry to you, then have it carried out against me and give me no respite.]

/4940 _1- ‘Alī b. Ibrāhīm said about His saying: “And let not their speech grieve you; surely might is wholly Allah's” up to His saying “because they used to disbelieve”—this is muḥkam (unambiguous). And His saying: “And recite to them” is an address to Muḥammad (may Allah bless him and his family): “the story of Nūḥ,” i.e., the account of Nūḥ, when he said to his people: “O my people! If my stay and my reminding you of Allah’s signs is grievous to you—then upon Allah I rely; so gather your affair and your associates whom you worship; then let not your affair be obscure to you (i.e., do not be distressed); then execute (your plot) against me—i.e., call (your powers) against me—and give me no respite.”
