Angels Engaged in Service

The third group consists of angels who are occupied in serving that Noble One (a.s.) at his grave.

They have various duties and occupations, and they are of many groups:

The first group: Those who remain disheveled and dust-covered, residing beside his grave, and whose occupation is to weep for him. They are four thousand angels. [1291]

The second group: Their duty is to welcome the visitors (zawwaar), accompany them, visit them when they are ill, and attend to their funerals after death. [1292]

The third group: Every morning they call out at his grave:

“O seekers of goodness! Come toward the bounties of Allah, so that you may be safe from regret.” [1293]

[ صفحه 416]

The fourth group: They address the visitors after they return:

“Blessed are you, O servant of Allah. You have attained a great gain, you have been granted safety, and Allah has forgiven you. Therefore begin your deeds anew.” [1294]

The fifth group: They are visitors and weepers for him. They come and ascend, and they too are four thousand angels each day. [1295]

The sixth group: One hundred thousand angels send blessings (salawaat) upon him every day and night. [1296]

The seventh group: Their occupation is seeking forgiveness (istigfaar) for the visitors. [1297]

The eighth group: They are the angels of the night and day who come to the angels of the haaer and shake hands with them. [1298]

The ninth group: They send (salawaat) salutations upon the visitors. [1299]

The tenth group: They convey the greetings (salaam) of those who greet him from afar, and this is Fitrus, who has been entrusted with this duty from the day he sought refuge in his cradle. [1300]

The eleventh group: They place a seal upon the foreheads of the visitors from the Light of Allah, signifying:

“This is a visitor of the best of martyrs.”

Through this seal they will be recognized on the Day of Resurrection.

Then the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and Jibrāʾīl will take them by the arm and save them from the terrors of the Resurrection. [1301]

The twelfth group: They gather the tears of those who weep for him and mix them with the Water of Life (maa al-hayaat), thereby increasing its sweetness and pleasantness. [1302]

The thirteenth group: In every heaven there are seventy thousand angels who have remained standing since the day the soul of that Noble One (a.s.) passed by them.

Their joints tremble from the intensity of their grief and fear until the Day of Resurrection, as narrated by Abu Dharr. [1303]

[ صفحه 417]

The fourteenth group: They will be his supporters during the raja'ah (Return).

These are the angels who sought permission from Allah to aid him.

When permission was granted, they prepared themselves and descended.

When they arrived, they found that he had already been martyred.

They said:

“O Allah! You granted us permission to assist him, but we did not reach him in time.”

Then revelation came:

“Remain beneath his dome until the time when you return and assist him, and weep over what you have missed of supporting him.”

Thus they remain there weeping.

When he returns, they will be among his supporters.

And if one of his Shīʿah weeps because he missed the opportunity to assist him, he will be like these angels. [1304]

The fifteenth group: They convey the salām of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) to the visitor, as has been narrated. [1305]

The sixteenth group: Those mentioned in the narration of ʿAnbasah from Imam al-Ṣādiq (a.s.), namely seventy thousand angels assigned to the grave of al-Imam Husain (a.s.).

They worship Allah, and a single prayer of theirs is equal to one thousand prayers of the children of Adam.

The reward of their worship is granted to the visitors of al-Imam Husain (a.s.). [1306]

The seventeenth group: By the command of Allah they accompany the visitors to their homes.

Afterward they are commanded to remain at the door of the visitor’s house and worship Allah.

When the visitor dies, they perform visitation on his behalf until the Day of Resurrection. [1307]

The eighteenth group: Angels who remain at the grave of the visitor after his death and seek forgiveness for him until the Day of Resurrection.

The nineteenth group: Every day one thousand angels surround the sanctuary (haram) of that Noble One (a.s.) until the Day of Resurrection. [1308]

The twentieth group: Those angels who cried out before Allah after his martyrdom—and these were all the angels.

When the Imam (a.s.) fell upon the ground and his blessed head was severed, Imam al-Bāqir (a.s.) said:

All the angels cried out at once before Allah:

“O our Master and Lord! Is this how they treat al-Imam Husain (a.s.), Your chosen one and the son of Your Prophet (s.a.w.a.)?”

Then revelation came to them:

“Be calm. By My Might and Majesty, I shall certainly take vengeance upon them.”

Then Allah showed the angels the forms of the Imams (a.s.).

Among them they saw al-Qāʾim (a.s.) standing and praying.

Then Allah said:

“Through this Qāʾim I shall take vengeance upon them.” [1309]

[ صفحه 418]

The twenty-first group: Those angels who carried his sacred soil (turbah) to the heavens after his martyrdom.

As it is narrated that an angel from the angels of Firdaus descended to the seas and spread his wings over all the oceans.

Then he cried out:

“O people of the seas! Put on garments of mourning, for the son of the Prophet (s.a.w.a.) has been slaughtered.”

Then he lifted some of the soil of that Noble One (a.s.) upon his wings and carried it to the heavens.

No angel remained except that he smelled that soil, and a trace of its fragrance remained with him. [1310]

The twenty-second group: Angels who descended for the washing (taghseel), shrouding (taqfeen), perfuming (tahneet), and funeral preparations of that Noble One (a.s.), as has been mentioned in its proper place. [1311]
