102. Love and Wrath of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (a.s.)

On Tuesday, 25th Dhī al-Qa‘dah 1434 AH, in the sacred city of Mashhad, I (the author of Fiqh al-Shī‘ah, in ten volumes, notes of the late Āyatullāh al-Khū’ī) was in the presence of Āyatullāh Sayyid Mahdī Khalkhālī, who narrated the following incident from his grandmother Khadījah Khānum:

“We were travelling in a caravan towards the holy shrines. When we reached the Asadābād Pass, armed bandits attacked us. They forced the pilgrims to dismount and looted everything they had.

One woman, riding a horse while carrying her nursing infant, refused to get off the horse despite the efforts of the bandits. She resisted, and during the struggle, her baby fell and was thrown into a deep valley. The woman screamed at the top of her voice:

‘O Abū al-Faḍl! I want my child from you!’

At that moment, the chief of the bandits, who was mounted on a horse, suddenly had his horse panic and throw him to the ground. His feet were caught in the stirrups, and the horse began to gallop, dragging him on the ground, scraping his head.

He shouted to his men, ‘Save me!’ They came and rescued him with difficulty. Then, the chief gathered his men and said:

‘Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (‘a) signalled to us! Everyone must return whatever they have taken from the pilgrims.’

The bandits obeyed. They returned the mounts and all the stolen belongings. Then the woman, whose child had fallen into the valley, said:

‘You must find my child!’

The chief ordered his men to descend into the valley and search. They went down and found the baby lying on a rock, completely unharmed, without even a scratch, peacefully asleep. They brought the child and returned it to the mother.

This incident demonstrated the wrath of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (‘a) toward the head of the bandits, and his mercy towards the zā’irah (pilgrim woman).

Āyatullāh Khalkhālī added about his grandmother:

“When I was a child and used to accompany her to the shrine of Hazrat Abū al-Faḍl (‘a), if the ḥaram was empty, she would kiss the ground from the entrance of the courtyard all the way to the ḍarīḥ, in one continuous movement, until she reached the shrine.”

2) During the time of the former regime, in one of the outposts around Urmia, several soldiers were serving under the command of an officer.

One day, a soldier was sent on a mission and did not return. A second soldier was sent after him, but he too did not return. A third soldier was then sent. On his way, he reached a village and was invited by the head of the tribe to be his guest for the night. He accepted, and the soldier was taken to his house. The host asked him:

“Do you know our language?”

He said, “No,” although he actually did.

Then an executioner with a thick neck was ordered to kill the soldier. That executioner told his companion, “You took the guns of those two, this soldier’s gun is mine.”

He picked up his dagger and attacked the soldier. The soldier, helpless, pleaded by the name of Hazrat ʿAbbās. The accursed man said, “Call Hazrat ʿAbbās to come and save you,” and stabbed him in the left side.

At that moment, a vehicle arrived carrying a doctor, an officer, and several soldiers. They stopped in front of the house and became suspicious of the owner.

The owner of the house had thrown a blanket over the soldier and said, “We were about to sleep.”

The officer sat on the blanket and felt something underneath. He pulled the blanket aside and saw that a soldier was hidden under it. Immediately, they rescued the soldier and arrested the culprits.

This too was a sign of the affection of Hazrat Qamar Banī Hāshim(a.s.) towards that soldier, and His wrath towards the bloodthirsty executioners.
