Concerning the special characteristics related to humility, reverence, tenderness of heart, and weeping at his remembrance.
Title Six: Concerning the special characteristics related to humility, reverence, tenderness of heart, and weeping at his remembrance.
Introduction
The sixth title: Concerning the special characteristics related to humility (خشوع) through the remembrance of that noble Imam (a.s.), tenderness of heart, weeping, establishing mourning gatherings, and reciting elegies. It contains one introduction and several objectives.
As for the introduction:
Know that Khushu'u (humility and reverent submission) is something beloved and desirable in the Divine Presence, as Allah says:
“Has the time not yet come for those who believe that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Allah?” (Surah al-Ḥadīd 57:16) [528]
Meaning: After Allah has given you intellect and understanding; after you have observed His signs within yourselves and throughout the horizons, indeed within every particle and every leaf; after you witness, day and night, the means of taking admonition in the condition of people afflicted with heedlessness; after the verses of the Qur'an have been recited to you—verses which, if recited to a mountain, would cause it to crumble; after you have lived as long as those who spent their lives in obedience to Allah and purification of the soul; after the Prophets (a.s.) and Messengers (a.s.) came and warned and frightened you; after Islam has been established for a long period, its message filling the ears of mankind, and after all of you claim adherence to it—
Has the time not yet come for your hearts to become humble at the remembrance of Allah?
And through that humility, should you not be prevented from disobedience?
And when you stand in prayer and contemplate His greatness, should you not become humble?
Life has passed, and yet you have not performed even two units of prayer with true humility.
Has the time not come for those who know that there is no benefactor and no refuge except Allah, that they should become humble before His remembrance, so that they have no thought and no remembrance except Allah?
Or has the time not come for those who have spent their noble lives in heedlessness and have not spent even an hour in the remembrance of Allah, that they should awaken and make amends during the remainder of their lives through humility of heart, overwhelming fear, and trembling anxiety?
Perhaps their repentance may be accepted, they may find a path into the Divine Presence, and they may not be among those veiled from the Divine Meeting.
Has the time not come for those who have been granted success in recognizing the friends of Allah (Awliyāʾ Allāh), that their hearts should become humble at the remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.), so that they weep for him and thereby enter among those whose hearts are humble at the remembrance of Allah?
For just as their Wilāyah is the Wilāyah of Allah, their enmity is the enmity of Allah, their love is the love of Allah, their visitation is the visitation of Allah, and their recognition is the recognition of Allah, so too humility of heart at their remembrance is counted as humility of heart at the remembrance of Allah.
Has the time for this not yet arrived?
Especially when Muḥarram begins and ʿĀshūrāʾ approaches.
Do you not see how all people become stirred and agitated?
Therefore, O believers, is it not time for your hearts to become humble through the remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.), which returns to and is connected with the remembrance of Allah?
So remember Allah with abundant remembrance through the remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.), in a manner that leads back to the remembrance of Allah.
For humility at the remembrance of Imam Husain (a.s.) is of several kinds, some of which return directly to the remembrance of Allah, and that is its most perfect form.
