I wrote to you.” I said: [1] Inform me of the sign of your letter? He said: “I will write to you with such-and-such a sign,” and he recited [2] a verse from the Qur’an.
I said to Fudayl: And what is that verse? He said: I have not narrated it to anyone other than Burayd al-‘Ijli. Zurara said: I will tell you: “And they swear by Allah with their most strenuous oaths …” to the end of the verse. He said: So Fudayl fell silent, and did not say “no” or “yes.”

99-/6026 - Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn Jarir al-Tabari in Musnad Fatima (peace be upon her) said: Abu al-Hasan ‘Ali ibn Hibatillah informed us, he said: Abu Ja‘far Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn ibn Musa ibn Babawayh al-Qummi narrated to us, he said: My father narrated to us from Sa‘d ibn ‘Abdillah, he said: Ya‘qub ibn Yazid narrated to us, he said: Muhammad ibn Abi ‘Umayr narrated to us, from ‘Umar ibn Udhaynah, from Fudayl ibn Yasār, who said:
I said to Abu ‘Abdillah (peace be upon him): If the Sufyani appears, what do you command me? He said: “When that happens, I will write to you.” I said: Inform me of the sign of your letter [3]? He said: “I will write to you with such-and-such a sign,” and he recited a verse from the Qur’an.
He said: So I said to Fudayl: What is that verse? He said: I have not narrated it to anyone other than Burayd al-‘Ijli. Zurara said: I will tell you; it is:
“And they swear by Allah with their most energetic oaths: Allah will not raise up him who dies. Nay! it is a promise (binding) on Him.” Then Fudayl fell silent and did not say “no” or “yes.”
(Qur’an 16:38, M. H. Shakir)
Surely Our word for a thing, when We intend it, is only that We say to it, Be, and it is. ... And those who fly for Allah’s sake after they are oppressed, We will most certainly give them a good abode in this world; and certainly the reward of the hereafter is much greater, did they but know.
(Qur’an 16:40-41, M. H. Shakir)
99-/6027 _1- Muhammad ibn Ya‘qub: from Ahmad ibn Idris, from Muhammad ibn ‘Abd al-Jabbar, from Safwan ibn Yahya, who said:
I said to Abu al-Hasan (peace be upon him): Inform me about will (irada): from Allah and from the creation? He said: “Will, on the part of the creation, is the intention within (the conscience), and what then appears from them of action; but as for Allah, exalted is He, His will is His originating (the thing), nothing else—because He does not deliberate, nor resolve, nor reflect; these attributes are negated from Him, and they are attributes of creation. Thus Allah’s will is the act itself, nothing else. He says to it: Be! so it is—without utterance, without speech with a tongue, without intention, without reflection, and without any ‘how’ to that, just as there is no ‘how’ to Him.”
99-/6028 _2- ‘Ali ibn Ibrahim said: His saying, the Exalted: “And those who fly for Allah’s sake”—that is, they migrated and left the unbelievers for the sake of Allah.
(Qur’an 16:41)
We will most certainly give them abode—meaning: We will surely give them in this world a good (position); and the reward of the hereafter is greater, did they but know.
(Qur’an 16:41)
And We did not send before you any but men to whom We sent revelation—so ask the followers of the Reminder if you do not know—with clear arguments and scriptures; and We have revealed to you the Reminder that you may make clear to men what has been revealed to them, and that haply they may reflect.
(Qur’an 16:43-44, M. H. Shakir)

And His saying, Mighty and Majestic: “And most surely it is a reminder for you and your people, and you shall soon be questioned” [1]—Abu Ja‘far (peace be upon him) said: “We are his people, and we are the ones to be questioned.”

I said: So you are the ones to be questioned, and we are the questioners? He said: “Yes.” I said: Is it truly upon us to ask you? He said: “Yes.” I said: Is it truly upon you to answer us? He said: “No. That is up to us—if we wish, we do so, and if we wish, we do not. Do you not hear the saying of Allah, blessed and exalted: ‘This is Our free gift, therefore give freely or withhold, without reckoning’ [3].”
